Graduation Gifts to Mail: A Name Mug and a Note for the Grad Who Lives Far Away

Updated

In short

To mail a graduation gift to a grad who lives far away, Emily Post says to give it near the date or have it delivered in advance, to be opened on the day. Her list of gifts a graduate will appreciate includes books, cash and engraved jewelry; a name mug gift box ships finished, with your card on top.

Graduation 2027: each school sets its own date

Order early: count back 7 business days from the day the gift should arrive (how we count).

Send this gift

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • Timing, from Emily Post: "If you can't attend in person, but wish to send a gift, give it near in date to the graduation, or have it delivered in advance with instructions to be opened on the day" (Emily Post).
  • Invited guests send a gift: "if you're invited to the ceremony or are attending a graduation party, send or bring a gift" (same page).
  • Classic graduation gifts: "Jewelry (often engraved with the date), books, cash or stock certificates, luggage, a camera, or graduation rings are all presents the graduate will appreciate in the years ahead" (same page).
  • Spring graduations meet warm weather. Ghirardelli says "only some locations are eligible for Standard Shipping during the months of Mid-April to Mid-November" for its chocolate (Ghirardelli).
  • A name mug from Personalized Gifts Delivered: the grad's name or a few words on an 11 oz mug, with cocoa and truffles inside and your printed card on top, $35 per box, delivered.

When should you mail a graduation gift?

Near the date, or early with a note. Emily Post's rule for a gift you send rather than bring is to "give it near in date to the graduation, or have it delivered in advance with instructions to be opened on the day" (Emily Post).

There is no national graduation day: each school sets its own. Work back from the ceremony on the invitation. A May or June ceremony shares its weeks with Mother's Day and Father's Day, when chocolate shippers already run their warm-weather rules (below).

Step What to do (our suggestion)
1. Find the date The ceremony date on the announcement or invitation
2. Find the address Where the grad will be the week it should arrive, which may not be the dorm
3. Count back 7 business days before the day it should arrive: up to 2 to ship and up to 5 in transit
4. Write the card "Open on graduation day" can go right in the message

The dorm-address trap. A grad who is moving out may not be at the campus address by the time a box gets there. Ask the grad, or a parent, which address to use.

Do you have to send a gift for a graduation announcement?

Emily Post answers this one directly: "It is an etiquette myth that if you receive a graduation announcement you must send a gift. Announcements do not equal invitations to a graduation." It also gives the rule for guests: "if you're invited to the ceremony or are attending a graduation party, send or bring a gift" (Emily Post).

For a grandparent, an aunt or a godparent far away, the question is what to send: something that marks the day, travels well and comes with your words.

What can you mail a graduate far away?

Gift Why it works from far away (our view) Note
Cash or a check, in a card On Emily Post's list ("cash or stock certificates"), and useful for whatever comes next The card carries the words
A book On Emily Post's list; a book you loved at their age, with a note inside Ships flat
A keepsake with their name Something with their name or the year on it, to keep after the money is spent Choose one they'll use
Jewelry engraved with the date On Emily Post's list: "Jewelry (often engraved with the date)" A bigger budget
A name mug gift box A keepsake to use every morning, with treats inside and your card on top Ships finished, from Personalized Gifts Delivered

A name mug can go alongside a check: mail the check in your own card, and let the box carry the keepsake and a printed note.

What to write in a graduation card

The pattern that works (our suggestion): one specific thing you're proud of, one line about what comes next, and no lecture. Each message below is under 300 characters, with no sign-off (the sign-off is its own field on a Personalized Gifts Delivered order). On an order, [Name] becomes each grad's first name from your list.

From far away

Congratulations, [Name]! We couldn't be there to watch you cross the stage, so we're sending a cheer from here. So proud of you.

For the late nights ahead and the early mornings after. So proud of you, [Name].

We remember your first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday. Now look at you. Congratulations, [Name], from your biggest fans.

For a high school graduate

Congratulations on graduating, [Name]! Take this to the dorm: cocoa for the all-nighters, and a reminder that home is one call away.

Class of 2027! We've already told everyone we know. Congratulations, [Name], and enjoy every minute of it.

For a college graduate

You did it, [Name]. Four years of hard work, and you made the hardest part look easy. Congratulations, graduate.

Congratulations, [Name]! A degree, a new city and a first job. This mug is for the desk. Fill it often and call home sometimes.

Short and simple

Proud of you today and every day, [Name]. Congratulations, graduate.

No advice from us. You've clearly got this. Just congratulations, [Name], and a warm drink for the first quiet morning after.

Congratulations on your graduation, [Name]. Whatever comes next, start each morning with something warm and remember who's cheering.

On a Personalized Gifts Delivered order, every card in the order carries the same message and sign-off, so a grandparent sending to three grads in one spring writes one message that fits all three, with each first name filled in. The order page tells you if a message is too long to print.

A name mug for the dorm, the first apartment or the first job

A mug is the keepsake that gets used. On a Personalized Gifts Delivered mug, words print as a name or a few words in a choice of 3 fonts (our suggestion: 25 characters or fewer); a photo or design prints up to about 3 in tall, on one side or both sides.

Words that fit a grad (our suggestions):

On the mug For
The grad's first name Any grad; it's theirs in a shared kitchen
"Class of 2027" High school or college
"Dr. Rivera" or "Rivera, RN" A new doctor, nurse or other title earned
A photo from graduation day Sent a week later, when you have the photo

The fonts print Latin letters, including most accents; the order page names any character it can't print. More ideas: personalized mug ideas.

Spring and chocolate. A graduation box in May or June ships in the months when chocolate shippers change how they ship. Lake Champlain Chocolates says "exposure to heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt" (Lake Champlain Chocolates), and Bar & Cocoa recommends "bringing your package indoors as soon as possible on delivery days" (Bar & Cocoa). Our box holds chocolate truffles, so ship it to an address where someone is home.

What sending it yourself takes

Yes: you can assemble a name mug gift at home. For one gift, the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46 (the itemized DIY cost, as of Oct 29, 2026), before the cocoa, the chocolate, a gift box, tissue and a card, each bought separately. Then the packing: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and has to be bought, packed and shipped again.

For scale, by our estimate 25 mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work, plus a week or more waiting for supplies to arrive. Priced from retail supply packs, they come to about $38 a box with USPS counter postage (about $34 with commercial postage), with $1,192.84 paid up front, with leftovers (DIY vs ordering). Per box, about even with our $35, before your time.

What to know before you order

  • The address. The box ships to the address on your list; the order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay. A dorm address after move-out is the one to double-check.
  • The seal. Today the gold seal sticker that closes the tissue reads "Happy Holidays", the only seal in stock; the order page names the seal in stock when you order. The card, read first on the lid, says congratulations in your words.
  • Chocolate in warm months. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
  • One design per order. Every mug in an order carries the same name or photo; a mug with a different name is its own order, and one box is a complete order. The card's first-name field is how one order greets several grads by name.
  • Where we ship. From New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. P.O. boxes are fine; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses.
  • No set delivery day. There's no way to pick a ship date or a delivery day: each box ships within 2 business days of a complete order, so the date you order is the date you choose.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: the grad who lives far away

A grandparent or relative mailing a graduation gift needs it there near the day, with words that sound like them, and nothing to assemble. Personalized Gifts Delivered does the assembling:

  • Their name on the mug: the grad's name, "Class of 2027" or a graduation photo, on an 11 oz white ceramic mug. You see it in the preview before you pay.
  • Treats inside: a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, packed inside the mug.
  • Your card on top: your message, printed on a textured card in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, lying on the lid so it's read first.
  • Packed and shipped to the grad: by hand, in foam, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid, inside a plain white carton whose return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name.

Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

$35 per box, delivered, with no minimum: the personalized name mug gift box, shipped to their door. For a grad still in finals, see the finals week care package. Ready? Start a personal order.

Write one specific thing you're proud of, one line about what comes next, and skip the lecture. For example: "For the late nights ahead and the early mornings after. So proud of you." Keep it short enough to read twice.
What is a good graduation gift to mail to a student far away?
Something that travels well and says it came from you: cash or a check in a card, a book, or a keepsake with their name on it. Emily Post lists "Jewelry (often engraved with the date), books, cash or stock certificates, luggage, a camera, or graduation rings" as gifts a graduate will appreciate.
