Client Gifts by Profession (2026): What 29 Trades Send, What They Spend, When, and the Rule for Each

Updated

In short

Every trade gives client gifts on its own occasion: realtors at closing and the holidays, nonprofits when board terms end and donors give, suppliers at year end. Reported spending runs from about $5 a volunteer to $150 for an advisor's top households. Rules vary by trade; the IRS $25 limit covers any trade deducting gifts as a business expense.

On this page9 sections

We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • IRS: "You can deduct no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year" (Publication 463).
  • RESPA: "There is no exception to RESPA Section 8 solely based on the value of the gift or promotion" (CFPB RESPA FAQs, updated Oct 7, 2020).
  • FINRA Rule 3220: $300 per person per year since March 30, 2026 ($100 until March 29), for gifts to people at other firms, not "individual retail customers" (Rule 3220; Regulatory Notice 26-05).
  • Insurance in New York: gifts "not exceeding twenty-five dollars in value" (Ins. Law §2324(a)); other states set other caps.
  • Federal employees: may accept unsolicited gifts of "$20 or less per source per occasion" (5 CFR 2635.204).
  • Medicare and Medicaid patients: the OIG reads "nominal value" as "no more than $15 per item or $75 in the aggregate per patient on an annual basis" (OIG policy statement, Dec 7, 2016).

What does each profession send clients? One table, 29 trades

The fit column. Strong: our box suits the trade's usual client gift. Scoped: it suits some recipients only (your own clients, a top tier), or a quoted rule caps gifts for others. Weak: the trade's usual gift is something else (a door drop, a condolence card, a staff treat).

Which gift rule applies to my profession?

This section quotes the rules. It doesn't apply them to your situation. Every limit side by side: client gift limits by industry.

Mortgage, title, inspections and real estate referrals:

"Are gifts and promotions allowed under RESPA Section 8?"

"It depends." … "There is no exception to RESPA Section 8 solely based on the value of the gift or promotion."

CFPB RESPA FAQs, Gifts and Promotional Activity (updated Oct 7, 2020; read Oct 26, 2026)

A gift to your own client for their own business has a separate CFPB answer ("Generally, yes"), quoted on the realtor and loan officer pages. Full rule: RESPA Section 8 in the CFPB's own words.

Broker-dealers:

No member or associated person may give anything of value "in excess of $300 per individual per year to any person, principal, proprietor, employee, agent or representative of another person where such payment or gratuity is in relation to the business of the employer of the recipient of the payment or gratuity." … "This Rule does not apply to… gifts from a member or an associated person to individual retail customers."

FINRA Rule 3220 (in effect since March 30, 2026; read Oct 26, 2026)

The limit was $100 until March 29, 2026 (Regulatory Notice 26-05). More: FINRA Rule 3220 explained.

Government clients and Medicare or Medicaid patients: the $20 federal limit and the OIG's $15 line are quoted, with their sources, in the key facts above.

Insurance, law and accounting have their own pages with the text quoted: insurance agents (state caps from $25 to $250), law firms (ABA Rule 7.2(b)(5)) and CPA firms (AICPA independence).

What the text says, and doesn't: RESPA names no dollar amount below which a gift to a referral partner is fine. The federal and OIG figures also cap a year's total per person, as several states' insurance caps do, so other gifts to the same person count too.

This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or ask your compliance officer or counsel) before you send.

The IRS $25 rule (every trade)

"You can deduct no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year."

"Incidental costs, such as engraving on jewelry, or packaging, insuring, and mailing, are generally not included in determining the cost of a gift for purposes of the $25 limit. A cost is incidental only if it doesn't add substantial value to the gift. For example, the cost of gift wrapping is an incidental cost. However, the purchase of an ornamental basket for packaging fruit isn't an incidental cost if the value of the basket is substantial compared to the value of the fruit."

IRS Publication 463 (for use in preparing 2025 returns; read Oct 26, 2026)

Whether a gift box counts as incidental packaging depends on the facts; that judgment belongs to your tax professional. More in are client gifts tax deductible?

This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or ask your tax professional) before you send.

What do the trades with the best fit have in common?

Look down the "Strong" rows and three things repeat:

  • A short list. A top tier of 10 to 60 clients, a board, a few dozen key accounts.
  • Clients in more than one place. Past clients who moved, board members in different states, remote buyers.
  • A card that does the work. Several of the gifts people describe keeping came with a note about a closing, a campaign or a year of orders.

Card wording by occasion: holiday card messages for clients. The address list: our client address spreadsheet template.

A custom logo mug gift box, shipped to each client

$35 per box, delivered. No minimum: one box is fine. Add your address list and we ship each box to its own address.

Can you send your top tier's gifts yourself?

Yes: you can assemble and ship client gift boxes yourself, and by our estimate 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work (about 3½ of them packing, at about 8 minutes a box), plus a week or more waiting for supplies. Per box, it comes out about even: about $38 with USPS counter postage or about $34 with commercial postage, against our $35, with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels, with leftovers (our DIY cost comparison, prices as of Oct 26, 2026). A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again; a stale address sends a box away and back.

What to know before you order

  • Gift limits. Each box is $35, delivered. The caps quoted above: $20 per occasion for federal employees, $15 per item for Medicare and Medicaid patients, $25 for insurance agents' gifts in New York, and $5 to $25 for title companies' gifts to agents in Washington, California and Florida. Every limit side by side: client gift limits by industry.
  • Referral partners in a RESPA trade: our box is for your own clients, at their own addresses, not the agents who refer them.
  • Where we ship: from New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now (no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international). The order page flags those rows so you can fix them or take them out before you pay; everything else on your list stays as it is.
  • The treats: LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. Every box holds the same treats, and the allergy and diet checklist covers what to ask first.
  • One card message per order, greeting each client by first name. Different words for one client make an order of its own; one box is a complete order.

Frequently asked questions

What do professionals send their clients for the holidays?
Professionals' holiday client gifts depend on the trade: realtors send treats and things for the house, advisors send gift baskets to top households, suppliers send something useful for work, and nonprofits give board members small logo gifts. A common pattern gives a top tier a gift; with no minimum, the same $35 box for every client on a list of 40 is $1,400 delivered.
Which gift rule applies to my profession?
Gift rules by profession: RESPA Section 8 covers mortgage, title, inspection and real estate referrals; FINRA Rule 3220 covers broker-dealers; insurance agents follow their state's anti-rebating law. Lawyers and CPAs have their ethics codes, and health practices the OIG's nominal-value line for Medicare and Medicaid patients. The IRS $25 deduction limit applies to business gifts in every trade.
Which gift rules set a cap of $25 or less?
Several do: New York's insurance law allows agents' gifts "not exceeding twenty-five dollars in value", federal employees may accept gifts of "$20 or less per source per occasion", the OIG reads nominal value for Medicare and Medicaid patients as "no more than $15 per item", and title companies' gifts to agents are capped at $5 to $25 in the three states we checked.
Can I send a gift to someone who refers me business?
In mortgage, title, inspection and real estate referrals, the CFPB says "There is no exception to RESPA Section 8 solely based on the value of the gift or promotion." Lawyers may give "nominal gifts" under ABA Model Rule 7.2(b)(5). Check your own trade's rule before you send.
How much do professionals spend on client gifts?
What people in each trade write on Reddit ranges from about $5 a head for volunteers to $150 for a financial advisor's top households; we found no recent neutral survey across trades. A common pattern spends more on a small top tier.
Who ships a client gift to each client's own address with no minimum?
Personalized Gifts Delivered ships a logo mug gift box to each client's own address from one list: your logo printed small on an 11 oz mug, Ghirardelli cocoa, 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles and a printed card, at $35 per box delivered, whether you send 1 or 50.
