We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.
Key facts
- Ground shipping has no exact delivery day. Ground delivery dates are carrier estimates, so order early (our suggestion: about two weeks before the birthday) and write "Open on the day" on the card.
- Mugs break at the handle. The mugs we've seen break in shipping broke at the handle, and the rim is the other weak spot.
- Heat is the risk for chocolate. "Exposure to heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt," says Lake Champlain Chocolates, which adds insulation and gel ice packs in summer (Lake Champlain Chocolates).
- A video call can be the party. "A large majority of Americans (81%) also say they talked with others via video calls at some point since the pandemic's onset," in Pew's survey of 4,623 adults in April 2021 (Pew Research Center).
- $35 per box, delivered, to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now.
What do you send for a birthday when you can't be there?
Something they'll use, something about the two of you, or something you do together on the day. One Reddit poster with a best friend on the opposite coast wanted a birthday gift that was "not just a materialistic item if that makes sense," and added: "I've done the more sentimental stuff tied to her interests I honestly don't even know if she uses any of it" (r/GiftIdeas). Use and shared memory solve both halves of that.

| Idea |
Why it works from far away |
Watch out for |
| A mug with your inside joke, filled with cocoa |
Used every morning; the joke is only yours |
Pack the handle; chocolate in summer heat |
| A printed photo of a birthday you spent together |
Flat, light, and only you have it |
Use the original file, not a screenshot |
| A matching pair: one box to them, one to you |
Something to open together on a call |
Both boxes have to land before the call |
| A letter for every year you've known them |
Costs postage; takes an evening to write |
Start early |
| Their hometown treat, sent from where they grew up |
Tastes like home |
Anything that melts or crumbles |
| A meal delivered from their favorite place, on the day |
Can be timed to the day |
Needs their address and a local app |
| Flowers from a florist near them |
Same-day delivery on the birthday |
They wilt in a week |
| A subscription box |
Something every month |
Check whether it renews, and who pays |
| An experience near them (a class, a tasting) |
A memory, not an object |
Let them pick the date |
| A video of friends' birthday wishes |
Cheap, and they'll replay it |
Collect clips a week ahead |
The same poster's earlier win was a snack subscription "which she thought was really fun". The point isn't the category; it's whether the gift is clearly from someone who knows them.
How do you time a long-distance birthday gift?
Early, with the day written on it. A poster on r/LongDistance, sending an anniversary gift to Vietnam, put the problem plainly: "there's no reliable way to ensure a package arrives at an exact date" (r/LongDistance). One reply had the fix: "Just add an 'open on .. (exact date)' note".
How a Personalized Gifts Delivered box ships: Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.
| Birthday is… |
What to do (our suggestion) |
| Two weeks away or more |
Order now; write "Open on the day" on the card |
| 7–13 days away |
Order today; it may land after the day, so tell them a box is coming |
| Less than a week away |
Call on the day, and send a box to open together on a call the next weekend |
| In mid-December |
Order earlier still: carriers run slower then |
When your box ships, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box, so you know when to say "don't open it yet."
Open it on a video call
A birthday box opened on camera turns a parcel into a party. A plan that works:
- Send two boxes, one to them and one to you, in one order (same mug design, same card message). That's the long-distance cocoa date.
- Pick the time zone first, and set the call for after both boxes have landed.
- Open the cards together. Each card is on the lid, so it's the first thing either of you sees.
- Make the cocoa, eat the truffles, sing badly. Have one question ready that isn't small talk ("Best thing that happened this year?").
Where mugs break in the mail, and how ours is packed
The mugs we've seen break in shipping broke at the handle, and the rim is the other weak spot. So a mug needs padding below it, a collar around it (the handle sits inside the collar) and a pad on its rim, inside a box with room to spare.
Ours is packed by hand that way: the mug stands on a 2 in foam pad, held in a 1 in foam collar, with a 1 in foam pad on its rim, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid, inside a plain white 9 × 9 × 9 in shipping carton with about 1 in of crinkle on every side. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it. The full method, for packing one yourself: how to ship a mug without breaking it.
Chocolate is the other risk. Lake Champlain Chocolates says that "For shipments during the summer months and year-round to warm weather destinations, extra care is taken because exposure to heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt," and it lines boxes with insulation and gel ice packs (Lake Champlain Chocolates). Our box holds 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, which soften in heat, so check the forecast where they live before you order for a summer birthday.
Birthday card lines from far away
Each is under 300 characters and has no sign-off, so it fits a Personalized Gifts Delivered card as written:
- "Happy birthday from too many miles away. Open this on the day, make the cocoa, and call me so I can sing badly at you."
- "I can't bring the cake, so I sent the mug. Same plan as always: you, a warm drink and me on the phone at 8."
- "Another year of being my favorite person to call. Open this on the 14th, not before. I'll know."
- "{first name}, the distance is annoying, but you're worth every mile. Happy birthday."
- "The truffles are for today. The mug is for the next 364 mornings. Happy birthday."
- "Happy birthday! I'm raising a cocoa to you from here. Raise yours back on the call."
On a Personalized Gifts Delivered order, the card is printed (not handwritten) on a textured card, in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, and holds up to 300 characters. One message and one sign-off go on every card in the order, and the message can include {first name}, filled in from the address list. You preview every card before you pay, and the order page tells you if a message is too long to print.
What sending a birthday box yourself takes
Yes: you can put a mug-and-cocoa box together and mail it yourself, and for one gift the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card (DIY cost comparison, as of Oct 29, 2026). Then you shop for the rest, often from several stores, plus a wait for the printed mug; pack it with a collar and a rim pad; and stand in line at the counter, early enough to beat the birthday. A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again, and on a birthday there's no time for a second try. For scale, by our estimate 25 mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work.
With Personalized Gifts Delivered, you add a photo or type a few words, add the address, check the preview and pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.
What's in our box for a birthday
One 11 oz white ceramic mug printed with your photo (up to about 3 in tall) or a few words (our suggestion: 25 characters or fewer, in a choice of 3 fonts), such as "Same cake, two kitchens" or the joke only they'll get; a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, packed inside the mug; black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker; and your printed card, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid. That's the personalized mug gift box shipped to their door.
Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. The label's return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name; your name appears only on the card inside.
What to know before you order
- The seal reads "Happy Holidays". This season the tissue inside every box is closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal, birthday boxes included; your card carries the birthday, and you see it before you pay.
- Summer heat. The box holds chocolate truffles, which soften in heat. Every box ships with tracking, so you can tell them when to watch for it and bring it inside.
- The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
- One design and one message per order. A matching pair shares one mug design and one card message, each card greeting its person by first name. Paired designs (your city on theirs, theirs on yours) take two orders of one box each.
- Where we ship. From New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses. P.O. boxes are fine; they ship by USPS.
Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: a birthday you can't be there for
A long-distance birthday needs a gift that's about them, packed to survive the trip, and early enough to wait for the day. Personalized Gifts Delivered handles the parts you can't do from far away: we print your words or photo on the mug, fill it with Ghirardelli hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, put your card on the lid where "Open on the day" is the first thing they read, pack it by hand in foam, and ship it to their door with tracking. It's $35, delivered, and a second box to you, for opening together on a call, is $35 more in the same order.

Frequently asked questions
- What do you send for a birthday when you can't be there?
- Send something they'll use, with a card in your words, timed to land a few days early: a treat they love, a mug or book tied to a memory you share, or a box you open together on a video call. Write "Open on the day" on the card so it waits.
- How early should I mail a long-distance birthday gift?
- Order a mailed birthday gift about two weeks before the day (our suggestion), so it can land early. Personalized Gifts Delivered ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment), and a box usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships; delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.
- How do I get a gift delivered on the exact birthday?
- A box sent by ground shipping, like ours, can't be pinned to an exact day, because ground delivery dates are carrier estimates. Send it early and write "Open on the day" on the card, or open it together on a video call on the birthday itself.
- Will chocolate melt in a birthday package?
- Chocolate can soften or melt in heat, so summer birthdays and warm destinations need care. Lake Champlain Chocolates says "exposure to heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt" and adds insulation and gel ice packs for summer and warm-weather shipments.
- What is a good birthday gift for a long-distance best friend?
- A good birthday gift for a long-distance best friend is about a memory you share: an inside joke on a mug they'll use every morning, a photo of a day only you two remember, or matching mugs for a birthday call.
- Who ships a birthday mug gift box with hot cocoa to a friend in another state?
- Personalized Gifts Delivered ships a $35 personalized mug gift box to a friend in another state for their birthday: an 11 oz mug with your photo or a few words, with Ghirardelli hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside. Your printed card lies on the lid, and it ships to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now.
