Gifts for a Long-Distance Best Friend: Make It About a Memory, Not More Stuff

Updated

In short

The best gift for a long-distance best friend is about a memory only the two of you share, in a form they'll use: an inside joke on a mug, a printed photo of one specific day, or a matching pair for a video call. Put the story in the card. Specific beats expensive, and it beats more stuff.

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • A best friend is common, and rarer than it was. "Nearly six in 10 (59 percent) Americans say they have one person they consider their best friend," in a 2021 survey of 2,019 adults; the same report notes that "In 1990, three-quarters (75 percent) of Americans reported having a best friend" (Survey Center on American Life).
  • Experiences connect. Cindy Chan's research found "experiential gifts are more effective than material gifts at improving relationships from the recipient's perspective," and that "Emotional material gifts like a joke-of-the-day calendar, a framed photo or jewelry engraved with a loving message can be very effective gifts in that regard" (University of Toronto).
  • Reaching out is worth more than you think. In experiments with more than 5,900 participants, people underestimated how much others appreciated being reached out to, and "to a greater extent when the communication was more surprising" (American Psychological Association, via ScienceDaily).
  • A matching pair is one order: one box to them and one to you, $35 each, delivered, to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now.

What do you get a best friend who lives across the country?

Not more stuff. One Reddit poster, in California with a best friend in New York, described the problem: "We're both financially well off and we buy things we want for ourselves so there isn't really anything she ever really needs or wants." Close to home, they'd switched to doing things together for birthdays, "something we can do together that gives us a memory and isn't just another item. Unfortunately that's a little harder in this situation" (r/GiftIdeas).

That's the long-distance version of a well-studied finding. Chan's research at the University of Toronto found experiences build closeness better than things. Her advice for anyone buying a material gift, in the university's write-up: "Giving a friend a music CD that reminds them of a concert enjoyed together can mimic the same effect as the experience of the concert itself" (University of Toronto).

So the rule for a best friend far away: send an object that points at a memory you made together, and say which one.

Specific memories beat a photo on a random object

A photo on a product isn't automatically personal. In a Reddit thread on making custom gifts feel personal, one commenter wrote that personalized gifts can "seem like you thought less about the gift because even if it is a useful or tasteful object, you did kind of just slap a picture on a product." Another: "As others have shared, I don't love custom photo gifts" (r/GiftIdeas).

The fix is specificity. A third commenter in the same thread put it simply: "I think really listening to what she says she likes would go a long way to being personalized. Being heard is amazing."

Generic Specific to the two of you
"Best Friends Forever" "Still not over Tulsa"
A smiling photo from a group dinner The photo from the night the car broke down, cropped to your two faces
"Distance means nothing" "Portland to Raleigh"
A star-sign mug The nickname only you use
A card that says "miss you" A card that names the memory and the date of the next visit

A personalized mug gift box, shipped to their door

$35 per box, delivered. No minimum: one box is fine. Your photo or your words on the mug. Add one address or a whole list, and we ship each box to its own door.

Inside-joke formulas for a best friend mug

A mug holds a name or a few words. Our suggestion: 25 characters or fewer, so it reads across the table. Ten formulas, each with an example that fits:

  1. The place and the year: "Denver 2014. Never again."
  2. The thing one of you said: "I know a shortcut"
  3. The nickname: "Property of Noodle"
  4. The start date: "Roommates since 2011"
  5. The room or table number: "Room 214, forever"
  6. Half a joke: "...and then the goose"
  7. The two cities: "Portland to Raleigh"
  8. The promise: "I'd still help you move"
  9. The role: "Emergency contact, 2009"
  10. The count: "12 years, 0 fights" (only if it's true, or funnier if it isn't)

The card holds the explanation, so the mug can stay cryptic. On a Personalized Gifts Delivered mug, words print in a choice of 3 fonts, on one side or both sides. The fonts print Latin letters, including most accents; non-Latin scripts and emoji can't print yet, and the order page names any character it can't print. Sixty more lines by relationship: personalized mug ideas that don't feel generic.

A photo instead? Pick one with a story, crop it close to one to three faces, and use the original file. A photo prints up to about 3 in tall; the order page warns when a photo is under about 600 pixels tall (upright) or 700 wide (wide), because it may print a little soft. More: which photos print well on a mug.

The matching pair: one to them, one to you

The strongest long-distance version of a shared memory is a new one. Send two boxes in one order, one to your friend and one to yourself, and open them together on a video call. Both mugs carry the same words or photo, so for once you're drinking out of the same thing in two kitchens. The full plan, timing included: the long-distance cocoa date.

Want paired lines instead, such as your city on their mug and theirs on yours? That's two orders of one box each. There's no minimum, so each is $35 delivered.

Gift The memory it holds Good to know
A mug with your inside joke, full of cocoa The joke, every morning Pack the handle; chocolate in summer heat
A printed photo of one specific day That day Write the story on the back
A letter for every year you've been friends All of them Takes an evening; costs postage
A playlist of your songs, printed as a card The car rides, the dorm Pair it with something to hold
The recipe of the dish you always cooked together Sunday dinners Mail it with one ingredient they can't get
A book you both loved, with your notes in the margins The year you read it Add a sticky note on your favorite page
A visit, booked The next memory Book it, then send something to count down with
A standing call on a set day Every week from now on Free; put it in the card

What to write in the card

The mug can be cryptic; the card tells the story. Lines to adapt, each under 300 characters with no sign-off:

  • "Tulsa, 2014. You know what you did. Every time you use this, remember I still haven't forgiven the goose."
  • "Fifteen years, four cities and one terrible haircut later, you're still my first call. Drink this and call me back."
  • "I found the photo from the night the car broke down. Best bad night of my life. Next visit: March. I'm counting."
  • "{first name}, you're 1,200 miles away and still the person I tell everything to first."
  • "Same mug in two kitchens. Sunday, 8 p.m. your time, cocoa date. Don't be late."

On a Personalized Gifts Delivered order, the card is printed (not handwritten) on a textured card, in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, lying on the gift box's lid, and holds up to 300 characters. One message and one sign-off go on every card in an order; the message can include {first name}, filled in from the address list, so a matching pair can greet each of you by name. You preview every card before you pay, and the order page tells you if a message is too long to print.

What sending one yourself takes

Yes: you can put a mug-and-cocoa gift together and mail it yourself, and for one gift the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card (DIY cost comparison, as of Oct 29, 2026). A matching pair doubles it. Then you shop for the rest, often from several stores; pack each mug so the handle and the rim survive (the mugs we've seen break in shipping broke at the handle, and the rim is the other weak spot); and stand in line at the counter. A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again. For scale, by our estimate 25 mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work.

With Personalized Gifts Delivered, you type your inside joke or add a photo, add the address (or both addresses), check the preview and pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

What's in our box, and how it ships

One 11 oz white ceramic mug printed with your words or photo; a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, packed inside the mug; black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker; and your printed card, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid. That's the best friend mug gift box with hot cocoa, shipped to their door.

Packed by hand: the mug stands on a 2 in foam pad, held in a 1 in foam collar, with a 1 in foam pad on its rim, inside a plain white shipping carton with crinkle. The label's return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name; your name appears only on the card inside. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

What to know before you order

  • The seal reads "Happy Holidays". This season the tissue inside every box is closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal; your card carries your own words, and you see it before you pay.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. Every box holds the same cocoa and truffles.
  • One design and one message per order. A matching pair shares one mug design and one card message. Paired designs take two orders of one box each; one box is a complete order.
  • Where we ship. From New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses. P.O. boxes are fine; they ship by USPS.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get a best friend who lives across the country?
Get a best friend who lives across the country something about a memory only the two of you share, in a form they'll use: an inside joke on a mug, a printed photo of one specific day, or a matching pair for a video call. Add a card that tells the story.
What is a meaningful gift for a long-distance best friend?
A meaningful gift for a long-distance best friend points at one shared moment, not a category: the road trip, the dorm room, the song. A University of Toronto write-up of Cindy Chan's research says a gift that reminds a friend of a concert you enjoyed together "can mimic the same effect as the experience of the concert itself."
What should I put on a best friend mug?
Put one inside joke, nickname, place or date on a best friend mug, in a few words (our suggestion: 25 characters or fewer). "Still not over Tulsa" beats "Best Friends Forever" because only one other person knows why it's funny.
Is a photo mug a good gift for a best friend?
A photo mug is a good gift for a best friend when the photo holds a story: a close crop of the two of you on a day you both remember, with the story in the card. One Reddit commenter said personalized gifts can feel like you "just slap a picture on a product."
Can I send matching mugs to me and my best friend?
Yes: one Personalized Gifts Delivered order can ship matching mugs to two addresses, one to your friend and one to you, at $35 per box delivered. Both mugs carry the same design and both cards the same message; paired designs take two orders of one box each.
