How to Send a Gift to Someone in Another State (Without the Post Office)

Updated

In short

The easiest way to send a gift to someone in another state is to order from a seller that ships to their address with your note inside, as Personalized Gifts Delivered does: no packing, no post office. To mail it yourself, pad it on every side and budget for postage: USPS's retail Ground Advantage price for up to 2 lb runs $11.30 to $19.80.

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • Four routes: order to their address, pack and mail it yourself, send a gift card, or use a local delivery service near them.
  • Mailing it yourself: USPS's retail Ground Advantage price for a parcel up to 2 lb is $11.30 in zone 1 and $19.80 in zone 8 (USPS Notice 123, effective Oct 4, 2026, read Oct 29, 2026), plus the box and padding.
  • Christmas: USPS's recommended Ground Advantage send-by date for delivery by Christmas in the lower 48 is Thursday, December 17 (USPS).
  • What breaks: the mugs we've seen break in shipping broke at the handle, and the rim is the other weak spot.
  • Surprises leak: USPS Informed Delivery, which is free, sends "Daily Digest emails that preview your mail and packages scheduled to arrive soon" (USPS).

How to send a gift to someone in another state, step by step

  1. Get the right address. Ask them, or ask someone who lives with them if it's a surprise. Check it with the free USPS ZIP Code lookup and add the apartment or unit number. Confirm even the address you think you know.
  2. Pick something that travels. Shelf-stable treats, books, and anything that can be padded so it can't move. Flowers and fresh food don't mail well; chocolate needs care in warm weather.
  3. Choose how it gets there. Order to their door, mail it yourself, send something digital, or use a local delivery service near them. The table below compares the four.
  4. Add your words. A seller prints your message on a card inside the box. If you pack it yourself, write the card by hand and put it on top, so it's the first thing they see.
  5. Time it. Work back from the day you want it in their hands, using the seller's order-by date or the carrier's send-by date. Mid-December runs slow.
  6. Track it, and decide whether to tell them. Keep the tracking number. Text them a heads-up if the box would sit on an exposed porch, or keep quiet and let it surprise them.

Ordering to their address takes the box, the padding and the counter off your hands. Mailing it yourself makes sense when the gift is something only you can make. A gift card lets them choose. Local delivery is how flowers or a hot meal travel.

What breaks, what melts and what wilts in the mail?

  • Ceramic and glass break. The mugs we've seen break in shipping broke at the handle, and the rim is the other weak spot. Give a mug about 2 in of padding on every side (our suggestion), fill the inside with paper, and wrap the handle. Shake the packed box: if anything moves, add padding.
  • Chocolate melts. Lake Champlain Chocolates says that "for shipments during the summer months and year-round to warm weather destinations", heat and humidity "can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt", so it adds insulation and gel ice packs (Lake Champlain Chocolates).
  • Flowers and fresh food wilt. Send them through a florist or a shop near the recipient, not through the mail.
  • Liquids leak. Bag anything that pours, and keep it away from paper and fabric.
  • Addresses go stale. A missing unit number or an address from two moves ago sends a perfect gift to the wrong door. Check each one before it ships.

What does it cost to mail a gift yourself?

USPS's retail Ground Advantage prices, the price at the counter, depend on weight and on the zone (how far the parcel travels: zone 1 is local, and zone 8 covers the longest trips in the lower 48).

Weight, up toZone 1Zone 3Zone 5Zone 8
1 lb$10.05$10.70$11.70$13.65
2 lb$11.30$12.70$14.85$19.80
3 lb$11.80$13.15$15.70$23.15

Weigh the packed parcel, not just the gift: padding and a second box add weight. A packed gift of 2 lb going across the country costs $19.80 to mail at the counter, before you've paid for the carton, the padding or the gift box. Make it a mug gift and the bill grows: for one gift, the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card (DIY mug gift box vs ordering one, as of Oct 29, 2026).

Time is the other cost. The parts come from several stores, plus a week or more waiting for supplies to arrive; then the packing, the counter and the tracking. A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again, and an address from two moves ago sends the box away and back. For a list of relatives, by our estimate 25 mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work.

Or have it shipped for you. Personalized Gifts Delivered's personalized mug gift box shipped to their door is $35 delivered: one 11 oz white ceramic mug with your photo or a few words, a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside it, and your printed card, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid. The mug stands on a 2 in foam pad, held in a 1 in foam collar, with a 1 in foam pad on its rim, and the gift box travels in a plain white shipping carton with crinkle around it.

Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

Can I send a gift anonymously?

Yes, if two things stay quiet: the outside of the parcel and the card.

  • The outside. Mail it yourself and your return address is on the label. Order from a seller and the seller's name is there instead. With Personalized Gifts Delivered, the label's return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name; your name appears only on the card inside, and only if you sign with it.
  • The card. Sign it "Your Secret Santa", "Someone who's proud of you", or nothing they'd recognize.
  • The heads-up. We don't ask for the recipient's email or phone number; the tracking email comes to you. But USPS Informed Delivery is free and sends "Daily Digest emails that preview your mail and packages scheduled to arrive soon" (USPS), so a recipient who uses it may know a parcel is on its way.

When is the best time to send it?

Earlier than you think, in December. USPS's recommended Christmas send-by dates for the lower 48 are Thursday, December 17 for Ground Advantage, Friday, December 18 for Priority Mail and Saturday, December 19 for Priority Mail Express, and USPS says actual delivery dates "may vary" (USPS).

For a birthday or any one day that matters, aim to have it there a few days early and write "Open on the day" on the card. Sending to several relatives for the holidays: Christmas gifts to mail to family you won't see this year.

What to know before you order

  • Where we ship. From New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses. The order page flags those rows, so you can fix them or take them out before you pay; everything else on your list stays as it is. In full: where we ship and how.
  • Your mail carrier. Each box is $35, delivered. USPS's 2025 Holiday Ethics Guide says postal employees "can accept a noncash gift valued at $20 or less if the total value of gifts from a single customer in a calendar year does not exceed $50" (USPS News, Dec 2, 2025, read Oct 29, 2026). Its Ethics FAQ allows "A retail gift card valued at $20.00 or less" and bars "Cash or cash equivalents (money order, check, Visa or American Express gift card, etc.)" (USPS Ethics FAQs, read Oct 29, 2026). This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or check with the recipient's agency ethics official) before you send.
  • The card is printed. Your message and sign-off are printed (not handwritten) on a textured card, sealed in an envelope with a gold wax-seal sticker and laid on the lid, so it's read before the box opens. You see it in the preview before you pay.
  • The day it lands. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December. For a day that matters, order a few days early and write "Open on the day" on the card; the tracking email shows where the box is.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. Every box holds the same 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, so you know exactly what they'll open.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: a gift to another state, without the post office

From another state, the hard part of a gift is everything around it: the box, the padding, the card and the counter. Personalized Gifts Delivered does all of it. Your photo or words print on an 11 oz mug; Ghirardelli cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles go inside it; your card, greeting them by first name, is sealed and laid on the lid; and the mug is packed by hand in a foam collar with a foam pad on its rim, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid, inside a plain white carton whose return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name. It ships to their door for $35, delivered, and the tracking number comes to you. One relative or every one on your list, each box is $35.
