Finals-Week Care Package for a College Student: What to Send, How to Address the Dorm and When to Mail It

Updated

In short

To mail a finals-week care package to a college dorm, address it to the student's full name as the college has it, then the room number and hall, then the college's complete mailing address, and send it about two weeks before exams start (our suggestion). The campus mailroom adds a step, and campus mail can stop when students move out.

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • Fall 2026 finals run in December. UCLA's fall-quarter final examinations run December 7–11; Penn State's fall final exams run December 14–18; UConn's run December 14–20 (UCLA, Penn State, UConn).
  • The name has to match. VCU asks for the student's "Full Name (as it appears on your student account)" and says items missing any part of the address "will be subject to delivery delays or may be returned to the sender" (VCU).
  • "Delivered" isn't "ready." VCU: an email from a carrier "does not mean that the package is available" (VCU).
  • No college logos. Colleges such as the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, license their names and logos (University of Tennessee, Knoxville).

When should a finals care package arrive?

Before exams start, and well before move-out. A box that lands during the last exam, or after the student has gone home, misses the point.

College (fall 2026)Before examsFinal examsSource
UCLA (quarter)Instruction ends Fri Dec 4; common final exams Sat Dec 5 – Sun Dec 6Mon Dec 7 – Fri Dec 11UCLA Registrar
Penn StateStudy days Sat Dec 12 – Sun Dec 13Mon Dec 14 – Fri Dec 18Penn State Registrar
UConnClasses end Fri Dec 11Mon Dec 14 – Sun Dec 20UConn Registrar

Check the student's own college calendar; dates differ by school and by term. Spring exams come in May: UConn's spring 2027 final examinations run May 3–8 (UConn).

Our suggestion for timing: order about two weeks before the first exam. Three things stack up:

  1. Shipping. Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.
  2. The mailroom. VCU notes that mail to its residence hall centers "typically takes a bit longer than residential mail to arrive from USPS," and that USPS "often marks packages as delivered when they arrive at the area post office" (VCU).
  3. Breaks. "Packages and letters sent during breaks may be delayed in delivery," VCU says, and its mail centers run reduced hours or close when the university does. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26: UConn's Thanksgiving recess runs November 22–29, and UCLA's Thanksgiving holiday is November 26–27.

So for exams that start the weekend of December 5 (UCLA's common finals), our suggestion is an order in the week of November 16, before the Thanksgiving gap. For exams that start December 14, the week of November 30 leaves about two weeks.

How do you address a package to a college dorm?

Use the exact format the college's mail services page gives. The two we read start the same way and differ on the street line:

Line What goes on it Example
1 The student's full name, as the college has it Jordan A. Rivera
2 Room number and hall name Room 412, Brandt Hall
3 The street address the college gives for that hall, only if it gives one (from the mail services page; UConn's residence halls take none)
4 City, state, ZIP (from the mail services page)

What colleges say about it:

  • UConn lists the student's "Proper Full Name," the "Room# and Hall Name" and "Storrs, CT 06269," says "DO NOT INCLUDE A STREET ADDRESS" for the residence halls it lists, and warns that "Altering this layout will result in delay of delivery and possibly the rejection of the mail/package being processed" (UConn Mail Services).
  • VCU says: "don't forget to include the student's full name and room number. Always use the complete mailing address" (VCU).

Three mistakes to avoid:

  • A nickname. The mailroom matches the name to its housing list. Use the name on the student's account.
  • A missing room number. At a hall with hundreds of residents, the room is how the package finds them.
  • Guessing the street line. VCU gives each hall a street address; UConn's residence halls take none ("DO NOT INCLUDE A STREET ADDRESS"). Copy what the college publishes, and add nothing it doesn't ask for.

On our address list, the room and hall go in Address Line 2 when the college gives a street address for Address Line 1, and in Address Line 1 when it gives none, as at UConn's residence halls. The template is here: address list template.

What happens at the mailroom?

The carrier delivers to the college, not to the student's door. VCU's rules show how it works at a large campus:

  • A notice when it's ready. Students get an email from the mailroom "once each piece of mail or any package has been delivered, processed, and is available for pick-up."
  • ID to collect it. "Residents must provide their VCU ID for retrieval of all mail and packages."
  • A pickup window. "All letters and packages are held for 14 days from their date of delivery"; after that, items "will be returned to the sender if possible or disposed of if a zero cost return is not possible."
  • Nothing after move-out. "Mail service for campus residents ends at the close of their housing contract or once they move out, whichever occurs first," and "Mail forwarding services are NOT available" (VCU).

Other colleges' rules differ in the details. Text the student the tracking number, and ask them to watch for the mailroom's own email, not the carrier's.

What to put in a finals-week care package

Things that make a long study night easier, and that they'll use up before they pack for break:

Item Why it helps Tip
Hot cocoa, tea or their coffee A warm drink for a study break Single packets beat a big tin in a dorm
Chocolate and a few snacks Fuel that doesn't need a fridge Check allergies, even for a roommate share
Earplugs and a sleep mask Dorms can be loud during finals Cheap and small
Sticky notes, highlighters, good pens They run out at the worst moment Nothing fancy
A gift card for the campus coffee shop A walk and a coffee between exams Check which shops take it
A card from home The part they keep Name the exam you know they're worried about
One keepsake at most A mug they'll use all year Their name or an inside joke, not the college logo

Skip anything they'd have to carry home a week later.

A mug for a student: what to print

A mug that lives on a dorm desk should say something only they would get:

  • their name, or the nickname the family uses;
  • an inside joke ("Fuel for Orgo");
  • their class year ("Class of 2030"), with no college name or logo;
  • a photo of the dog they miss.

Leave the college's name, logo and mascot off. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, says its licensing program "protects the use of the university's names, logos, slogans, insignias, symbols, and mascots," and that its Office of Trademark Licensing "monitors commercial and internal use of our trademarks" (University of Tennessee, Knoxville).

On a Personalized Gifts Delivered mug, words print as a name or a few words (our suggestion: 25 characters or fewer) in a choice of 3 fonts. The fonts print Latin letters, including most accents; non-Latin scripts, such as Devanagari, Greek or Chinese, and emoji can't print yet, and the order page names any character it can't print. A photo or design prints up to about 3 in tall, on one side or both sides; the order page warns when a photo is under about 600 pixels tall (upright) or 700 wide (wide). We remove location and camera data from photos before they're stored. Choosing a photo: which photos print well on an 11 oz mug.

Sending a finals box with Personalized Gifts Delivered

Our box is a study-break kit that ships to the dorm: a personalized mug gift box shipped to their door, $35 per box, delivered, with no minimum. Inside: the printed mug with a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside it, black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker, and your printed card, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.

Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

Card lines for exam week:

  • "Hi {first name}! Cocoa for the night before the big one, truffles for the hard ones. Proud of you already."
  • "{first name}, finals are temporary; cocoa is a constant. Call us when the last one's done."
  • "For the late nights: cocoa, chocolate and a reminder that we think you're brilliant. See you over break!"

The sign-off is its own field, printed under the message ("Love, Mom and Dad"), so leave it out of the message. One message and one sign-off go on every card in an order, up to 300 characters, and you preview every card before you pay.

Can you pack and mail it yourself?

Yes: you can pack a finals box yourself, and for one gift the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46 (the itemized DIY cost, as of Oct 29, 2026), before the cocoa, the chocolate, a gift box, tissue and a card. Then the work: order the mug and wait for it, buy the rest one piece at a time, pack it so the handle survives (by our estimate, about 8 minutes once every part is on the table), and stand in the post office line in late November.

What a small mistake costs: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again, and a box missing the room number or carrying a nickname can sit in the mailroom or go back to you. With Personalized Gifts Delivered, you add the address once, in the college's own format, and check the preview; we print, pack and ship the box.

What to know before you order

  • The seal says "Happy Holidays". This season the tissue inside is closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal, which suits December finals and the break that follows.
  • The day it lands: delivery dates are carrier estimates, and the campus mailroom adds its own step before pickup. Order about two weeks before the first exam (our suggestion).
  • Move-out ends campus mail. At VCU, mail service ends at move-out and nothing is forwarded. Once exams have started, a box can go to the student's home address for break instead.
  • Their name, not the college's logo. We print the student's name, an inside joke or a photo, never a university's or a team's logo.
  • The treats: LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. The allergy and diet checklist covers what to ask first.
  • Where we ship: from New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. P.O. boxes are fine; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: a student far from home in exam week

For a student three states away in finals week, the box this page describes is a warm drink, something sweet, one keepsake and words from home, addressed the way the mailroom wants it. Personalized Gifts Delivered sends it finished:

  • The study break: Ghirardelli hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, packed inside an 11 oz white ceramic mug printed with their name, an inside joke or the dog they miss.
  • Words from home, read first: your message, greeting them by first name, printed on a textured card in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, lying on the lid.
  • Every student in one order: twins at two colleges, or every grandchild in college, one row each, one box per address, $35 per box, delivered. Every mug in an order carries the same photo or words, so a different name on each mug is its own order. When the boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box, so you can text each student their tracking number.
  • Packed for the trip: packed by hand, with a 2 in foam pad below the mug, a 1 in foam collar around it and a 1 in pad on the rim, inside a plain white carton. The return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you address a package to a college dorm?
A package to a college dorm needs the student's full name as it appears on their student account, the room number and hall name, and the college's complete mailing address, in the format the college's mail services page gives. A missing part can delay it or send it back.
When should a finals-week care package arrive?
A finals-week care package should arrive before exams start, so mail it about two weeks ahead (our suggestion). In fall 2026, UCLA's final examinations run Monday to Friday, December 7–11, and Penn State's December 14–18.
Can a gift box be shipped straight to a dorm?
Yes: Personalized Gifts Delivered ships its $35 personalized mug gift box to a dorm like any other address in the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now, with tracking. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and the campus mailroom adds its own step before the student can pick it up.
Can I put the college's logo on the mug?
Personalized Gifts Delivered doesn't print a university's or a team's logo on a personal gift: those are trademarks their owners license. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, for example, says its program "protects the use of the university's names, logos, slogans, insignias, symbols, and mascots." Print the student's name or an inside joke instead.
What happens to a package that arrives after the student moves out?
At some colleges, campus mail stops when the student moves out. Virginia Commonwealth University, for example, holds packages 14 days, then returns them to the sender if possible or disposes of them, and offers no forwarding, so time the box for exam week, not after it.
