Car Salesperson Gifts for Customers: Delivery-Day and Holiday Gifts Better Than Magnets and Pens

Updated

In short

A car buyer on r/askcarsales asked salespeople to skip the magnets and pens; another was "very happy" with a Ford insulated mug at pickup. Salespeople there describe a handwritten card, key chains, and flowers with every purchase at one dealership group. Who pays depends on the store.

We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • "please don't send me magnets or pens. I already have plenty of junk in my house," a customer wrote on r/askcarsales (Aug 2019).
  • "A couple purchases ago the sales guy got me a Ford insulated mug when I picked up my truck and I was very happy," wrote another (r/askcarsales, Apr 2024).
  • Who pays varies. At one dealership group, "They want the sales people to pay for it and most of them won't"; another gave "a bouquet of flowers with every purchase" (r/askcarsales, Oct 2024).
  • 87% of end-users would keep a branded drinkware item because it is useful (ASI 2026 Ad Impressions Study; a promotional-products industry survey).
  • The FTC's review rule bars incentives "conditioned expressly or by implication on" reviews "expressing a particular sentiment" (16 CFR 465.4), in effect since October 21, 2024.

What do car salespeople give customers after a sale?

A salesperson who said "I am in the business" asked r/askcarsales: "Do any salespeople buy gifts for their customers?" and "How about magnets and pens? Birthday cards?" (thread, Aug 2019). Two later threads asked for "small gifts to give to customers" (Apr 2024) and about "companies that will send our thank you gifts/card to customer for you" (Oct 2024). What salespeople and buyers described:

What was given Who described it, and what they said Source
A handwritten thank-you card, with business cards inside A salesperson: "I always send a handwritten thank you card, and try to make it personal." … "It works." Oct 2024
Cards printed daily, filled out and mailed, "pictures too," plus flowers A salesperson, about a past dealership group: "We also gave a bouquet of flowers with every purchase." Same thread
"a thank you card and a couple of nice key chains" A commenter Aug 2019
A car-related tool A commenter: "Something practical, hopefully car related: emergency tool, flashlight, charging cable." Apr 2024
A $50 credit to spend in the parts and accessories department A commenter: "in a lot of cases, they get their hat or their mug" Same thread
A Ford insulated mug, handed over at pickup A customer: "I was very happy." Same thread

The pattern: something the buyer uses, with the dealership or the salesperson's name on it, and a personal card. The mug turns up twice in one thread. In ASI's 2026 promotional-products industry survey, 87% of end-users said they would keep a branded drinkware item because it is useful.

Magnets and pens, or something they'll use?

Buyers in the same threads drew the line between a gift and an advertisement:

  • "please don't send me magnets or pens." The customer who wrote that also said: "As a customer, I think receiving some sort of post-sale gift for anything is a really nice touch," and listed what would work instead: "A birthday card would be ok, or even just a little something like a key fob, or maybe a cool ball cap if you can budget for it, or a t-shirt."
  • "that's not a gift, that's advertising." The same customer, about a realtor's sports-schedule magnet with contact details: "I don't think I would appreciate getting one as a thank-you gift."
  • The mug that stuck. The buyer who got the Ford insulated mug added: "I don't think i would ever go buy something like that at the dealer but it was a nice way to get started with a new vehicle/brand".

A wider poll says the same about logos. In business.com's October 2022 poll of 1,547 professionals (a publisher-run survey), "Gift recipients said prominently branded items felt more like ads than tokens of appreciation," and 54% had thrown away at least one corporate gift without using it (business.com). Read together: a useful item, a small logo, and a card that sounds like the person who sold the car.

How much do salespeople spend, and who pays?

We found no survey of what car salespeople or dealerships spend on buyer gifts. The threads show the range: a card and key chains at the low end, a $50 parts-and-accessories credit or flowers at the store level, and, for one buyer who "had to drive a bit," a leather case for the owner's manual that the buyer guessed cost "like $60 or something" (Aug 2019).

Who pays changes the math:

Who pays What the threads describe Source
The salesperson "They want the sales people to pay for it and most of them won't." Oct 2024
The store's marketing budget "That is usually something that your marketing team takes care of." Same thread
The store, every buyer Daily printed thank-you cards and "a bouquet of flowers with every purchase" Same thread
Built into the deal "Charge $50 to the back end of every deal and let the customer pick out something from the parts and accessories department." Apr 2024

Paying out of pocket, a salesperson can start with repeat buyers and the customers who send referrals. Including every buyer is arithmetic: with no minimum, at $35 delivered each, 10 deliveries in a month come to $350, and one buyer is one box.

Delivery day or the holidays: when should it go?

  • Delivery day, in person. What you hand over at the car: the Ford mug at pickup, flowers, a key chain, the card. It travels home with the buyer.
  • The week after delivery, shipped. A gift that comes to the house after the paperwork is done is a second thank-you, away from the showroom. A shipped box can't be handed over at the car; it ships to the buyer's home instead.
  • December, for repeat buyers and referrers. One order covers the year's best customers, with every card greeting its buyer by first name.

Gifts and reviews: what the FTC's rule says

This section quotes the rule. It doesn't apply it to your store or your gift.

"It is an unfair or deceptive act or practice and a violation of this part for a business to provide compensation or other incentives in exchange for, or conditioned expressly or by implication on, the writing or creation of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, whether positive or negative, regarding the product, service, or business that is the subject of the review."

16 CFR 465.4, "Buying positive or negative consumer reviews" (eCFR, current as of October 27, 2026; read October 29, 2026)

Separately, the rule's definitions section defines buying a review, a term its fake-review section (465.2(b)) uses:

"Purchase a consumer review means to provide something of value, such as money, gift certificates, products, services, discounts, coupons, contest entries, or another review, in exchange for a consumer review."

16 CFR 465.1(m) (read October 29, 2026)

The FTC staff's answers on incentives, and Google's and Yelp's own review policies, are quoted on can you give customers a gift for a review?.

This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or ask your dealership's counsel or compliance officer) before you send.

What should the card say?

Write like the person who sold the car, and ask for nothing.

Hi {first name}, thank you for trusting me with your new car. If anything comes up, from a warning light to a question about a feature, call me first. Enjoy the cocoa and the drive.

{first name}, thank you for choosing me this year. If you need anything car-related in 2027, I'm one call away. Happy holidays.

On a Personalized Gifts Delivered order, the card is printed (not handwritten), with no logo or brand: one message and one sign-off for the whole order, up to 300 characters. The message can include {first name}, filled in from your list, and you preview every buyer's card before you pay. The order page tells you if a message is too long to print. Your name, or "Your team at" and the store's name, goes in the order's sign-off, not in the message. More lines: thank-you messages for clients.

How do I send one to each buyer?

Start from your sold list: first and last name and the home address. Our address spreadsheet template has the columns.

Can I pack and ship the gifts myself?

Yes: a salesperson can build and ship buyer gift boxes from home, and by our estimate 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work, plus a week or more waiting for supplies. That covers a mug printer's proof, about 8 supply orders, 25 labels, 25 cards and about 3½ hours of packing (about 8 minutes a box). Per box, it comes out about even with our $35: about $38 with USPS counter postage, about $34 with commercial postage, with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels (our DIY cost comparison, prices as of Oct 29, 2026). A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again, and a stale address sends a box away and back.

With Personalized Gifts Delivered, it's one order, for one buyer or a month's deliveries. Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. We ship from New York, to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

What to know before you order

  • The logo. Our terms say: "Give us only a design you have the right to use." A mug can also carry your own name or a few words, as a personal gift.
  • One message and one sign-off per order. Every card greets its buyer by first name. A different message for one buyer is its own order; one box is a complete order.
  • The seal and the treats outside winter. The tissue's gold seal reads "Happy Holidays", so for a delivery-day thank-you in July the card carries the occasion. The box holds chocolate, which softens in summer heat.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
  • Where we ship. The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out.
  • If something goes wrong. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits for a salesperson's buyers

The buyer with the Ford mug was "very happy" with something useful from the person who sold the truck. One order ships one to each buyer's home:

  • Something they use, not a magnet: an 11 oz white ceramic mug with your logo printed small (or your name, or a few words), with a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside it, black tissue closed with a gold seal sticker, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.
  • Your words on top: your message, printed on the card, greeting each buyer by first name, in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker. You see every buyer's card before you pay.
  • To each buyer's home, packed against breakage: packed by hand on a 2 in foam pad, in a 1 in foam collar, with a 1 in foam pad on top, inside a plain white shipping carton; the label's return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com.
  • A record for your CRM: when your boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box.

That's $35 per box, delivered, whether you send 1 or 50. Send each buyer a logo mug gift box with Ghirardelli cocoa, Lindt truffles and a personal card, shipped to each customer, no minimum.
