Thank-You Gifts for Customers: What Works at $10, $30–$50 and $75, Once Postage Is Counted

Updated

In short

Customer thank-you gifts by budget: at $10, a handwritten card or hand-delivered treat; at $30 to $50, a finished gift delivered to the door; at $75, a bigger box, not a bigger thank-you. Mailing even a small parcel costs $8.40 to $10.20 at the USPS counter, before the gift. Recipients' appreciation isn't linked to price.

We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • Postage first: a 1 oz stamped letter is $0.82; a USPS Ground Advantage parcel up to 8 oz is $8.40 to $10.20 at the counter, up to 1 lb $10.05 to $13.65 (USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026).
  • Price doesn't buy thanks: givers expect pricier gifts to be appreciated more; recipients' appreciation isn't linked to price (Flynn & Adams, 2009).
  • Small gifts work: in a restaurant field experiment, a single chocolate with the check raised average tips from 15.1% to 17.8% (Strohmetz et al., 2002).
  • Typical spend: a median of $24 per client gift (ASI, 2017) and $30 (business.com's 2022 online poll of professionals); both are industry or publisher surveys.

The Price Ladder: What Each Budget Buys, Postage Included

$10: Why a Mailed Gift Rarely Works

The numbers are blunt. A parcel of up to 8 oz costs $8.40 to $10.20 at the USPS counter, depending on distance, so a $10 gift sent by mail costs about $18 to $20 delivered. Postage is about half the total.

Small senders notice. In an r/realtors thread titled "Client Christmas Gifts?", the poster set a budget of "about $20 or less per client" and asked for something mailable; one reply: "Postage is going to eat up most of that $20 if you mail something bulky" (r/realtors).

What does work at $10:

  • A handwritten card. $0.82 to mail a 1 oz letter. Writers of thank-you letters underestimate how surprised and positive recipients feel, and overestimate how awkward it is (Kumar & Epley, 2018).
  • A treat, by hand. No postage at all. Small, unexpected treats measurably change how people respond: one chocolate with a restaurant check lifted tips from 15.1% to 17.8% (Strohmetz et al., 2002).
  • A note in the box you already ship. If you send customers orders, a handwritten line in the next one costs nothing in postage.
  • A gift link. Snappy's free Essential plan supports budgets "from $5" and lists "Shipping included", and the customer picks the gift.

$30 to $50: Finished Gifts, Delivered

Between about $30 and $50, a finished gift box or a recipient-choice gift reaches the customer's door with postage paid. Prices as of Oct 29, 2026:

  • $31.99, by our arithmetic: Caroo's $25 Recipient Choice plus "$6.99 flat-rate global shipping"; the customer picks.
  • $34.99 plus shipping: Packed with Purpose's Petite & Perfect basket (gummi berries, white pretzel balls, sea salt heirloom popcorn).
  • $35, shipping included: Personalized Gifts Delivered. An 11 oz white mug with your logo printed small, a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, and your printed card in a matte-black magnetic box.
  • $38 plus shipping: BOXFOX's Good Tidings box, with a handwritten card.

The mug is what stays after the chocolate is gone, and the card is where the thank-you lives. Your card message can greet each customer on your list by first name. If that's the gift you want, here is the logo mug gift box with Ghirardelli cocoa, Lindt truffles and a personal card. Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

$75: A Bigger Box, Not a Bigger Thank-You

At about $75 you can send a larger basket: BOXFOX's holiday boxes at $70, $76 and $80, or Ghirardelli's Classic Chocolate Gift Box at $81.95 ($73.76 on sale on Oct 29) with chocolate squares, two dark bars, caramel sauce and two hot cocoa packets.

What the extra money doesn't buy is extra appreciation. Givers expect pricier gifts to be appreciated more, but recipients' appreciation isn't linked to price (Flynn & Adams, 2009). And sending everyone the same gift is fine: givers shopping for several people tend to pick a different gift for each, passing up the one recipients would like best (Steffel & Le Boeuf, 2014). Personalize the card, not the object.

Our suggestion: for the handful of customers whose business pays for the year, put the extra into the card: a message written only for them, in an order of its own (one box is a complete order).

What the IRS $25 Limit Says at Each Rung

IRS Publication 463 (2025), ch. 3, "Gifts": "You can deduct no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year." And: "Incidental costs, such as engraving on jewelry, or packaging, insuring, and mailing, are generally not included in determining the cost of a gift for purposes of the $25 limit." But: "A cost is incidental only if it doesn't add substantial value to the gift. For example, the cost of gift wrapping is an incidental cost. However, the purchase of an ornamental basket for packaging fruit isn't an incidental cost if the value of the basket is substantial compared to the value of the fruit." (IRS, "For use in preparing 2025 Returns", read Oct 29, 2026)

The limit is per recipient per tax year, whatever the gift costs. Whether a box or basket counts as incidental is a judgment made on your facts. This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or ask your tax professional) before you send.

Which Customers Get Which Rung?

The ladder works the same for corporate thank-you gifts to clients. A simple split (our suggestion): a delivered gift for your top tier, with a message written only for the few accounts that carry the business. Including every customer is arithmetic: with Personalized Gifts Delivered's no minimum and $35 delivered per box, 40 customers come to $1,400. Survey medians of $24 (ASI, 2017) and $30 (business.com, 2022) sit between the first rung and the bottom of the middle one.

How to draw the line between tiers: which clients get a gift. Setting the total: how much to spend on client gifts. What to write at every rung: thank-you messages for clients. The whole client gift plan, from who gets one to when it should arrive: client holiday gifts 2026.

Can You Put a Middle-Rung Gift Together Yourself?

Yes: you can build and mail a middle-rung gift yourself, and per box it comes out about even. Priced from retail supply packs, 25 logo mug gift boxes come to about $38 a box with USPS counter postage and about $34 with commercial postage, against our $35 delivered. You pay $1,192.84 up front for the mugs, the supply packs and 25 postage labels, with leftovers (DIY vs ordering, as of Oct 29, 2026).

Your time comes on top. By our estimate, those 25 boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work, plus a week or more waiting for supplies: a mug printer to find and a proof to approve, about 8 supply orders, a cleaned-up address list and 25 labels, 25 cards, 25 boxes to pack at about 8 minutes each, and 25 tracking numbers to follow. One slip costs a second round: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle, a stale address sends a box away and back, and a typo on 25 printed cards means printing 25 again.

What to know before you order

  • One price, postage in. $35 per box, delivered, whether you send 1 or 50, with no minimum and no sales tax added at checkout. It sits on the middle rung of the ladder above.
  • One gift for every customer in the order. Each box holds the same mug, cocoa and truffles; the customer doesn't pick. The card carries your one message and greets each customer by first name.
  • A logo, or none. The logo prints small on the mug. For a thank-you without one, the same box carries a photo or a few words on the mug instead.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
  • Where we ship. The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. We don't ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, APO/FPO addresses or abroad.
  • Gift limits. Each box is $35, delivered. Some employers and industries cap the gifts their people may accept; the limits, quoted from their sources: client gift limits by industry.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits on the Ladder

For the customers on your middle rung, Personalized Gifts Delivered is the $35 thank-you with the postage already in the price and nothing left for you to assemble. Each customer's finished gift box ships to their own address: the mug with your logo printed small, Ghirardelli cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside it, black tissue closed with a gold seal, and your card on the lid, printed on a textured card in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker.

You check the mug and every customer's card in the preview before you pay, so the thank-you reads right on every box. Then we print, pack and ship each box to its own address. When your boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box. The thank-you is yours; the printing, packing and shipping are ours.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good thank-you gift for customers on a small budget?
On a small budget, a handwritten card costs $0.82 to mail and a hand-delivered treat costs no postage; a mailed Ground Advantage parcel up to 8 oz costs $8.40 to $10.20 at the USPS counter (prices effective October 4, 2026).
How much should I spend on a customer thank-you gift?
Typical client gifts run around $24 (ASI, 2017) to $30 (business.com's 2022 poll), and spending more doesn't buy more thanks: recipients' appreciation isn't linked to price (Flynn & Adams, 2009).
What can I send a customer for about $35 delivered?
As of Oct 29, 2026, three gifts come in near $35: Personalized Gifts Delivered's logo mug gift box at $35 delivered, Caroo's $25 recipient-choice gift at $31.99 with its $6.99 shipping, and Packed with Purpose's Petite & Perfect basket at $34.99 plus shipping. The Personalized Gifts Delivered box holds a logo mug with a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa, 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles and a printed card.
Is a customer thank-you gift tax deductible?
IRS Publication 463 says "You can deduct no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year." How packaging and shipping are treated depends on whether they add substantial value. Ask your tax professional.
Do thank-you cards matter as much as gifts?
They may matter more than senders think. In Kumar and Epley's 2018 experiments, people writing thank-you letters underestimated how surprised and positive recipients would feel, and overestimated how awkward the letters would be.
