Sympathy Gift Box vs Basket vs Flowers: What Each Costs, How Long It Lasts, What It Asks of a Family

Updated

In short

Send flowers to the service, a food basket to a household full of visitors, and a smaller gift box to one person once the funeral is over. Flowers need water and a record of who sent them; a basket needs room and a check of what everyone eats; a small box needs a check of what one person eats.

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts (prices as of Oct 29, 2026, before tax)

  • Flowers: 1-800-Flowers' sympathy page backs every arrangement for 7 days of freshness. Its Healing Tears Blue & White arrangement, "Hand-delivered by a local shop", was $54.99 (small) to $74.99 (large), plus a $16.99 to $18.99 service charge (1-800-Flowers).
  • A fruit and sweets box: 1-800-Baskets' With Sincere Sympathy Fruit & Sweets Box was $39.99, plus a $16.99 standard service charge, with pears, apples, mixed nuts, butter toffee peanuts, caramel popcorn and cookies (1-800-Baskets).
  • A gourmet box: Harry & David's Classic Sympathy Gift Box was $69.99, plus $19.99 standard shipping, with pears, baklava, cheddar, summer sausage, crackers and relish, and a "Pre-printed WITH SYMPATHY placard" (Harry & David).
  • Flowers come with a thank-you. The Emily Post Institute: "It's necessary to record the receipt of flowers so that the givers can be thanked" (Emily Post).
  • At a shiva, food comes first. Flowers are "not a customary practice for Jewish mourning" (My Jewish Learning).

Sympathy flowers, a food basket or a gift box: compared

One example of each, priced on the seller's own page on Oct 29, 2026, with the delivery charge from the seller's published chart. The checkout shows the charge for your date: 1-800-Flowers says that when you choose a delivery date, "the applicable shipping charges/service fees, or surcharges, and the amount will be shown" (1-800-Flowers FAQ).

Delivery charges come from the sellers' charts: 1-800-Flowers' local florist chart ($16.99 up to $59.98, $18.99 from $59.99 to $99.98), its chart for gifts shipped by its delivery partner ($16.99 up to $49.99), and Harry & David's standard shipping ($9.99 up to $65, $19.99 from $65.01 to $125). Members of 1-800-Flowers' Celebrations Passport program pay "no service charge" on qualifying orders sent two or more business days out, per its FAQ.

How fast each gets there, as each seller states it: 1-800-Flowers' local florists offer same-day delivery "in most areas of the U.S. and Canada" for orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday, 2pm Saturday or 12pm Sunday in the recipient's time zone (Local Florist Delivery Details). Its fruit box is a gift shipped by its delivery partner, FedEx (Shipped By Delivery Partner Details), and its sympathy gift baskets page says it offers "many varieties of gourmet food gifts" that are "available for either same-day delivery or next-day delivery" (1-800-Flowers). Harry & David's standard shipping takes 4 to 7 business days, and its express shipping, ordered by 1 p.m. ET, takes 3 business days, 2 business days or overnight, for an added charge per item (Shipping Information). For flowers that must be at a service tomorrow, a local florist is the fast route. Ours is under "Where we ship and when" below.

Are sympathy gift baskets better than flowers?

They do different jobs, at different moments.

  • For the service: flowers. The Emily Post Institute describes wreaths and sprays that "may be displayed at the funeral home, or on the altar or dais at the service", and says "Flowers can be sent to the bereaved's home, workplace, or to the funeral home" (Emily Post).
  • For a full house in the first days: food. The Institute's example of what neighbors bring: "a casserole, a fruit basket, or some brownies for the family and their visitors" (Emily Post). A basket built for sharing suits a kitchen full of relatives.
  • For one person, after the funeral: something small. When the visitors have gone home, a gift for one person lands on a quieter week. Emily Post notes that "some close friends send flowers to the home over the course of a few months as a reminder of their love and concern" (Emily Post); a small gift can play the same part.

So the better question is: who is it for, and when? A coworker's family hosting forty people after the funeral needs a tray. A friend's mother, alone in the house three weeks later, needs something warm and a note that names her husband.

What each one asks of a grieving household

Every gift asks something of the people receiving it, and in grief, small jobs feel bigger.

  • Flowers need fresh water, a place to stand and, sooner or later, a place in the trash. Someone also writes down who sent them. The Emily Post Institute: "Handwritten sympathy notes, personal emails, flowers, Mass cards, contributions to charities, and acts of kindness should always be acknowledged by the recipient, if possible" (Emily Post).
  • Food baskets need unpacking and eating, and fresh fruit doesn't wait. My Jewish Learning, on shiva visits, says "Knowing the family's dietary restrictions is helpful as not to bombard them with food they will have to pass along or dispose of" (My Jewish Learning).
  • A donation asks nothing of them, if you ask the charity to tell the family. Emily Post: "You may want to confirm with the charity that they will notify the family of your donation" (Emily Post).
  • A small gift box with nothing to keep cold asks for a kettle, and a look at the label.

You can lift the thank-you from any of these. Among the Institute's exceptions to acknowledging an expression of sympathy: "when the writer asks that her note not be acknowledged." Write "No need to reply" on the card, and mean it. What else to write on it: what to write with a sympathy gift.

How much should you spend on a sympathy gift?

There's no set amount. The examples above came to $35 to $89.98 delivered on Oct 29, 2026. On 1-800-Flowers' sympathy gift baskets and food page that day, the 34 gifts listed ran from $29.99 for an 18-piece chocolate box to $229.99 for a ham dinner, before delivery (1-800-Flowers).

Two guides help:

  • A donation in lieu of flowers. Emily Post: "Consider giving at least what you would have spent on a flower arrangement" (Emily Post).
  • A group gift. Colleagues, a club or neighbors can pool for one larger arrangement or basket. Emily Post: "If the list of names on the enclosure card is long, the senders can be identified as a group", and "Later, a card can be signed by the individuals who chipped in" (Emily Post).

What matters more than the amount is that the gift fits the moment and the household, and that it comes with words about the person who died.

Dietary, faith and allergy checks

Gift What to check
Flowers The obituary ("in lieu of flowers"); at a shiva, flowers aren't customary; a home with cats: the FDA says lilies in the "true lily" and "daylily" families "are very dangerous for cats" (FDA)
A fruit and sweets box Nut and peanut allergies: the box above includes mixed nuts and butter toffee peanuts
A gourmet box with meat and cheese Vegetarians, and faiths that limit meat or mixing meat and dairy: the box above includes summer sausage and cheddar
Any food gift to a family that keeps kosher A certification symbol on each package, or a gift chosen by someone in their community
The Personalized Gifts Delivered box LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. The assembled box is not kosher-certified

A food gift for a whole household is a guess about several people at once. When you don't know, ask someone close to the family before you send it. Our checklist for food gifts, allergies and faith has the questions.

When the house is full of visitors, food comes first

In the first days, a house full of relatives needs food that feeds everyone. A Personalized Gifts Delivered box holds one mug, one 1.5 oz packet of cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles: it's a gift for one person, not a tray for forty. Send the tray, or a meal, to the house now. Then send the box to the one person who will still be there when everyone else has gone home, a few weeks later (our suggestion). When to send what, from far away: what to send when someone is grieving and you live far away.

Can you put a sympathy gift box together yourself?

Yes: you can make one yourself. For a mug gift box, the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card (DIY cost comparison, as of Oct 29, 2026). The rest comes from several stores, and the mug has to be packed so the handle and the rim survive the trip: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again. That's shopping, packing and a trip to the counter. More ways to stay close from a distance: personal gifts for people you love who live far away.

What to know before you order

  • The seal reads "Happy Holidays". This season, the black tissue inside every box is closed with a small gold seal that says "Happy Holidays". In the first weeks after a death, that greeting can jar, so know it before you order. The card on the lid, read before the box opens, carries only your words.
  • One person per box. Each box is one mug and one person's treats. Several mourners in different homes? Add a row for each address; each box ships on its own, and one message goes on every card in the order, greeting each person by first name.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
  • Warm weather. The box holds chocolate. Lake Champlain Chocolates says that "For shipments during the summer months and year-round to warm weather destinations", "exposure to heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt" (Lake Champlain Chocolates). The truffles ride inside the mug, inside the gift box.
  • Where we ship and when. From New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: a gift for one person, after the flowers

Flowers for the service and food for the house do their jobs in the first days. The gift this page points to for the weeks after is one for a single person, with nothing to keep cold, arrange or answer. Personalized Gifts Delivered sends that, finished: a personalized mug gift box shipped to their door, with your photo or a few words on an 11 oz white ceramic mug, a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside it, and your printed card, sealed and laid on the lid, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid. It's packed by hand in a foam collar, in a plain white carton whose return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name. It's $35, delivered, with shipping included and nothing added at checkout, and the tracking number comes to you.

Frequently asked questions

Are sympathy gift baskets better than flowers?
Neither is better in general: flowers suit the service, and a sympathy gift basket feeds a household with visitors. At home, flowers need water and a record of who sent them; a food basket needs room and a check of what everyone there can eat.
How much does a sympathy gift basket cost?
On Oct 29, 2026, 1-800-Baskets' With Sincere Sympathy Fruit & Sweets Box was $39.99 plus a $16.99 standard service charge, and Harry & David's Classic Sympathy Gift Box was $69.99 plus $19.99 standard shipping, before tax.
How long do sympathy flowers last?
1-800-Flowers backs every sympathy arrangement for 7 days of freshness, and its page for gifts shipped by its delivery partner adds that "Some varieties will last even longer with proper care." A donation or a gift that gets used, such as a mug, lasts longer.
What is appropriate to send a grieving family?
Flowers, food, a donation or a note are all customary, and the family's wishes come first: when an obituary says "in lieu of flowers," the Emily Post Institute says to "take your cue from the request." At a shiva, food comes first and flowers are not customary.
What should I check before sending a sympathy food basket?
Check who is in the house and what they eat: on Oct 29, 2026, one fruit and sweets box held mixed nuts and peanuts, and one gourmet box held summer sausage and cheese. My Jewish Learning says knowing the family's dietary restrictions avoids food "they will have to pass along or dispose of."
Is there a sympathy gift box with chocolate that ships to their home?
Personalized Gifts Delivered ships one for $35, delivered: an 11 oz mug with a few words or a photo you choose, Ghirardelli hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside it, and your printed card on the lid. It's a gift for one person, and this season its tissue seal reads "Happy Holidays".
