We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.
Key facts
- Over half of grandparents have at least one grandchild who lives more than 200 miles away, in AARP's survey of 2,654 grandparents, fielded in 2018 (AARP).
- Most grandparents already use screens to stay close. AARP's 2026 study, a survey of nearly 3,300 grandparents in 2025, reports: "Three-quarters of grandparents (76%) say electronic technology like texting and video calls, social media, photo apps, email, and group chats are a primary way they stay connected" (AARP).
- A photo on a Personalized Gifts Delivered mug prints up to about 3 in tall, on one side or both sides of an 11 oz white ceramic mug. It doesn't wrap all the way around.
- Printful's print-file guide says "use 300 DPI" for mugs (Printful). At about 3 in tall, that is 900 pixels tall.
- $35 per box, delivered, with your card inside, to their door in the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now.
What do grandkids send grandparents who live far away?
Look for a gift that asks nothing of them. In an r/GiftIdeas thread about gifts for relatives who say they want nothing, a commenter whose daughter gave them a digital photo frame put the rule well: find "something that hits on their emotions without them having to learn or work at it to enjoy it" (r/GiftIdeas). Another commenter's family gave a grandmother a digital frame, and she turned it off and complained that "my mom wouldn't print those pictures for her." Same idea, opposite result: ask how they like their photos before you buy the hardware.

Nothing, if it needs no login |
Some grandparents love theirs; the grandmother in the thread above switched hers off |
| A video call on a set day |

A photo mug combines three of those rows: the grandkids' faces, a treat they use up, and nothing to learn.
Which photos print well on a mug about 3 in tall?
The photo prints up to about 3 in tall, so the faces are what count. Our guidance, in the order to check it:
- Crop close. Cut away the background until the faces fill most of the frame.
- One to three faces. Each extra face makes every face smaller. For a big family, pick the grandkids and save the full group for a printed photo.
- Daylight on their faces. A photo taken near a window, facing the light, beats a dim room or a shot with the sun behind them.
- About 900 pixels tall for the sharpest print. That's 300 DPI at about 3 in tall, the figure Printful's guide gives for mugs. A 12-megapixel phone photo is 4,032 pixels on its long side, far more than that. Below 200 pixels per inch at the size the photo prints (under 600 pixels tall for an upright or square photo, under 700 across for a wide one), our order page warns that it may print a little soft.
- Use the original file. A screenshot, or a photo saved from a group chat or social media, may have been shrunk. Ask whoever took it for the original.
- Eyes open, facing the camera. At this size, the faces are the whole picture.
- Plain or white backgrounds are easiest. The mug can't print white, so white in the photo shows the mug's own white.

A scanned drawing beats a store-bought "Grandma" mug
A child's drawing is about as personal as a print gets, and a bold one on white paper suits a mug:
- Draw on plain white paper with dark markers or crayons. Light pencil lines are hard to see at this size.
- Scan it if you can. A phone photo of paper often comes out grey, and grey can print as a pale box around the drawing. If you photograph it, do it flat in daylight from straight above, with no shadow across it.
- Crop to the drawing. Scanned on white paper, the paper's white shows the mug's own white (the mug can't print white), so the drawing sits on the mug with no box around it; the preview shows the result before you pay.
- Put the artist's name and age on the card, not on the mug, so the drawing has room.
One drawing keeps it large. Two young artists? Ask them to make one picture together.
Their names instead of a photo
Not every grandparent wants faces on a mug. The other option is a typed name or a short message of a few words, in a choice of 3 fonts. Short lines read best:
- "Grandma's Cocoa Mug"
- "Nana and Pop-Pop"
- "Love, Ava, Leo and Mia"
- "Grandpa Joe, est. 2019" (the year he became one)
Sixty more, by relationship: personalized mug ideas that don't feel generic.
What should the card from the grandkids say?
The card is printed (not handwritten), sealed in an envelope with a gold wax-seal sticker, and can be up to 300 characters. Sign it from the kids ("Love, Mia and Leo"): the sign-off is its own line on the order page, so leave it out of the message. Lines to adapt:
- "Hi Grandma! Mia drew your garden. She says the red thing is you. Make a cocoa and call us when you open it."
- "We can't be there for Christmas, so we sent our faces instead. One cup a day until we see you in March."
- "Grandpa, Leo picked this photo because you're both laughing in it. Use it on Sunday and we'll call at 4."
- "Every time you pour your coffee, you'll see us waving. We miss you. Merry Christmas!"
- "Nana, the cocoa is for you and the truffles are for sharing. Leo says you don't have to share. Happy holidays!"
A detail only your family would know (the garden, the Sunday call) is what makes a printed card feel written.
Can I make a photo mug gift for them myself?
Yes: you can order a photo mug and mail it to them yourself, and for one gift the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card (DIY cost comparison, as of Oct 29, 2026). Then you shop for the rest, often from several stores, plus a week or more waiting for supplies to arrive; pack the mug so the handle and the rim survive; and stand in line at the counter. A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again. Two sets of grandparents doubles all of it. For scale, by our estimate 25 mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work.
With Personalized Gifts Delivered, you add the photo, add each grandparent's address, check the preview and pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.
What's in the box, and how it reaches them
Each box holds one 11 oz white ceramic mug with your photo, drawing or words; a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, packed inside the mug; black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker; and your printed card, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.
Packed by hand: the mug stands on a 2 in foam pad, held in a 1 in foam collar, with a 1 in foam pad on its rim, inside a plain white shipping carton with crinkle. The mugs we've seen break in shipping broke at the handle, and the rim is the other weak spot. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.
Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. Two sets of grandparents in two states is one order with two addresses: both mugs carry the same photo, and both cards the same message, so write one that suits both ("Merry Christmas, Grandma and Grandpa"). That's the personalized mug gift box shipped to their door.
Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

What to know before you order
- The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. Every box holds the same 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, so one question to them, or to whoever shops for them, settles it.
- Assisted living. Facilities set their own rules about food deliveries, so ask the facility before you send. We ship to a facility's address like any other, with their name on the label.
- The seal reads "Happy Holidays". This season the tissue inside is closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal, so every box carries a holiday greeting; the card from the kids carries the rest.
- The day it lands. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, so send it early and write "Open on the day" on the card: it lies on the lid, so it's the first thing they see.
- Where we ship. From New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses. P.O. boxes are fine; they ship by USPS.
Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: grandparents far away
Grandparents far away get the grandkids' faces on the mug they pour their coffee into, with nothing to set up. Personalized Gifts Delivered prints the photo, or the kids' drawing, on an 11 oz mug and sends it with Ghirardelli cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside and a card from the kids on the lid. There's no login: they open a box. You see the photo on the mug, and the card, in the preview before you pay; we print the mug, pack it by hand in foam and ship it to their door for $35, delivered, one box to each set of grandparents in the same order.

Frequently asked questions
- What should I send grandparents who live far away?
- Send grandparents who live far away something they use every day with nothing to set up: printed photos, the kids' drawings, or a mug printed with the grandkids' photo, with a treat and a card from the kids. Skip anything that needs an app or an account unless they already use one.
- What kind of photo looks best on a mug?
- The photo that looks best on a mug is a close crop of one to three faces, taken in daylight, from the original file. A photo or design on a Personalized Gifts Delivered mug prints up to about 3 in tall, so a wide group shot leaves every face very small.
- How many pixels does a photo need to print on a mug?
- Printful's print-file guide says to use 300 DPI for mugs, so a photo printed about 3 in tall needs about 900 pixels of height. A 12-megapixel phone photo is 4,032 pixels on its long side, far more than that; a screenshot may not be. Below 200 pixels per inch at the size the photo prints (under 600 pixels tall for an upright or square photo, under 700 across for a wide one), our order page warns that it may print a little soft.
- Can I put my child's drawing on the mug?
- Yes, your child's drawing can go on the mug: draw on plain white paper with dark markers or crayons, scan it, and crop to the drawing. Scanned on white paper, the paper's white shows the mug's own white (the mug can't print white), so the drawing sits on the mug with no box around it; the preview shows the result before you pay.
- Can I send a box to each set of grandparents in one order?
- Yes, one Personalized Gifts Delivered order can ship a box to each set of grandparents, at $35 per box, delivered. Every mug in the order carries the same photo, and every card the same message, so write one that suits both.
- When should I order a photo mug gift for Christmas?
- Order a Personalized Gifts Delivered photo mug gift box by Tuesday, December 15 for Christmas delivery; that date covers printing your photo, packing and shipping. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.
