Farewell and Retirement Gifts: A Personalized Mug That Tells Their Story, With Team Card Ideas

Updated

In short

A good farewell or retirement gift from the team is personal and easy to take home: their name and years (or a team photo) on something they'll use, and a card in the team's words. Ship it to their home after the last day (our suggestion), so it isn't one more thing to carry out the door.

On this page11 sections

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • "She just left the glass thing in her office when she left": a commenter, about the engraved glass long-service award their wife received (r/smallbusiness, Nov 2025).
  • One manager's experience: "I've never seen a retiree get a personal gift from their manager. Company gift and maybe the immediate team chipping in on one" (r/managers, Jan 2026).
  • The federal ethics rule names retirement: 5 CFR 2635.304(b) says "A gift appropriate to the occasion may be given to an official superior or accepted from a subordinate or other employee receiving less pay" … "Upon occasions that terminate a subordinate-official superior relationship, such as retirement, resignation, or transfer" (5 CFR 2635.304(b), part of the executive branch's ethics standards).
  • Notes matter more than givers expect: people writing gratitude letters "underestimated how positive recipients would feel" (University of Chicago News, Sep 2018).

What's a Good Farewell or Retirement Gift?

Costs are our suggestions, not survey figures.

An engraved glass award or plaque$40 to $150The companyIt's part of a formal ceremony; see the key fact above

The "next chapter" idea comes from a small-business thread. In 2013, the owner of a four-year-old coffee shop asked r/smallbusiness how to thank the shop's first hire, who was leaving to walk dogs full-time; the budget: "$50ish?" (thread). Replies leaned toward helping the new business, such as advertising it in the shop.

Who Gives It: The Company, the Manager or the Team?

In January 2026, a manager asked r/managers whether to buy a personal retirement gift for a long-time employee they had grown frustrated with; the company was already giving one (thread). Three replies, in their words:

  • One retired manager's view: "Company gift and maybe the immediate team chipping in on one. So maybe organize a group gift and start off the process with your own contribution."
  • The years count: "working together for 20 years is a long time. I'd personally feel weird not acknowledging that. It doesn't need to be a fancy gift."
  • No regrets: "One of team that retired a couple years ago recently passed away. I'm happy I sent him on his way with a fun and personal gift."

The manager's own hesitation is worth keeping too: "As a manager, I really dont feel comfortable asking people who report to me to pitch in for a gift." Pressure to chip in is where team gifts go wrong; our guide to whether managers should buy team gifts covers the norm. The federal executive branch's ethics standards, 5 CFR 2635.304, say:

"(c) Voluntary contributions. (1) An employee may solicit voluntary contributions of nominal amounts from fellow employees for an appropriate gift to an official superior and an employee may make a voluntary contribution of a nominal amount to an appropriate gift to an official superior: (i) On a special, infrequent occasion as described in paragraph (b) of this section" …

"Example 5 to paragraph (c): … Although it is permissible to recommend a $5 contribution, the recommendation must be coupled with a statement that the employee whose contribution is solicited is free to contribute less or nothing at all."

Source: 5 CFR 2635.304 (eCFR), read Oct 29, 2026.

Paragraph (b), which (c) points to, lists "Upon occasions that terminate a subordinate-official superior relationship, such as retirement, resignation, or transfer." 5 CFR part 2635 is titled "Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch".

This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or check with the agency's ethics official) before you send.

Retirement or Resignation: What Changes

How companies mark the two differs. In an r/humanresources thread on workplace celebrations (thread), one commenter described their company's rule: "Departures - If a retirement, a farewell party. A regular resignation really doesn't get marked by much more than administrative communications." Another, at a company of about 50, described a farewell for a resignation that "would include cake cutting, a gift, maybe flowers, and a small speech".

  • Retirement has years to count, maybe a party, and maybe a formal company gift. The personal gift is where the team gets to say what the formal one can't (our suggestion).
  • Resignation is quieter, and the gift should be too: a card in the team's words and a small keepsake, shipped after the last day, thanks them without making the exit a scene (our suggestion).

In a 2025 thread, the owner of a "Small 5 person law firm" asked what to give an employee retiring at the end of the next year, in her 10th year (thread). The owner was thinking of "a cash gift card", "$500? $1,000?" One reply: "Thank you for not getting one of those glass trophy things. My wife got a glass engraved thing at the company Christmas dinner for working at a company for a long time." She had already accepted another job, and "She just left the glass thing in her office when she left."

A personalized mug gift box, shipped to their door

$35 per box, delivered. No minimum: one box is fine. Your photo or your words on the mug. Add one address or a whole list, and we ship each box to its own door.

Why Ship It Home After the Last Day

  • Nothing to carry out. A gift shipped home is opened at home, where the glass award above never made it.
  • After the goodbyes. A box shipped to their door after the last day, the team's card on the lid, is the last word instead of the last errand (our suggestion).

Ask the person for the address to use; a retiree may be moving. For the timing: Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

What to Put on the Mug

Each mug carries one kind of print: your logo, a photo, or a few words. For a farewell, the personal kinds tell the story:

  • Their name and years: "Maria Lopez, 1998 to 2026", in a choice of 3 fonts.
  • A line only the team would get: "Retired. Finally." or "Best boss, 2015 to 2026."
  • A photo: keep it to one to three faces. At about 3 in tall, a whole-team photo prints each face very small, so pick the two of you at the launch party rather than the group shot.

You see the mug in the preview before you pay. More ideas: personalized mug ideas.

Team Card Ideas

The card holds one message (up to 300 characters) and one sign-off (up to 100 characters, printed as typed), and the sign-off is where the team goes: "From Dana, Luis, Priya, Sam and everyone on the second floor." For a longer note from each person, collect them in a letter or book to hand over at the party; the card on the box carries the line everyone agrees on (our suggestion). Each message below is under 300 characters, with no sign-off inside.

What Sending It Yourself Takes

Yes: you can make a personalized farewell gift yourself. For one box, our DIY cost comparison priced a Printful mug shipped to you at about $12.76 and counter postage for the finished box (Zone 5) at $15.70: $28.46 before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card (as of Oct 29, 2026). For 25 boxes it comes out about even with our $35: about $38 a box with USPS counter postage and about $34 with commercial postage, with $1,192.84 paid up front, and by our estimate about 9 hours of hands-on work plus a week or more waiting for supplies. Then someone has to pack it so the handle survives the trip, and get it to the post office in the week of the goodbye.

Ordering from us, by contrast: type their name and years (or add a photo), add their address, check the preview, pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

What to Know Before You Order

  • One design per order. Every mug in an order carries the same photo or words, so a name on the mug means one order for that person: one box is a complete order.
  • The seal says "Happy Holidays". On every box today, the black tissue inside closes with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker; the team's card, read first on the lid, carries the farewell.
  • The card is printed. One message and one sign-off per order; the order page tells you if a message is too long to print.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. For a summer send-off, Lake Champlain Chocolates says that "exposure to heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt" (Lake Champlain Chocolates).
  • Where we ship. From New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now: no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses. The order page flags a row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay.
  • If something goes wrong. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits for a Farewell

The gift this page describes is personal, from the team, and shipped to their home. Personalized Gifts Delivered makes it with no minimum: a personalized mug gift box shipped to their door, $35 per box, delivered.

  • Their story on the mug: an 11 oz white ceramic mug printed with their name and years, a photo, or your logo, with a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside it, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.
  • The team's words: your message and the team's sign-off, printed on a textured card in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, lying on the lid so it's read before the box opens. You see the mug and the card before you pay.
  • To their home: packed by hand in foam and shipped in a plain white carton; the return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, and the team's names appear only on the card inside.
  • A record: when the box ships, one email brings a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box.

Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. Last day on the calendar? Start a personal order.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good going-away gift for an employee who is leaving?
A good going-away gift is personal and easy to take home: their name or a team photo on something they'll use, and a card in the team's words, shipped to their home after the last day. Add something for what's next if you know it: a new business, a move, a new field.
What's a good retirement gift from the company?
A good retirement gift from the company pairs whatever it gives formally, a bonus or an award, with something personal: their name and years on a keepsake they'll use, and a card from the people they worked with. One commenter's wife left an engraved glass long-service award in her office when she left.
Should a manager buy a retiring employee a personal gift?
One r/managers commenter, a retired manager, wrote, "I've never seen a retiree get a personal gift from their manager. Company gift and maybe the immediate team chipping in on one," and suggested organizing a group gift and starting it with your own contribution. Another replied, "working together for 20 years is a long time" and "It doesn't need to be a fancy gift."
What do you write in a retirement card from the team?
Write the years, one thing they did that everyone remembers, and what comes next: "22 years, Maria, and the front desk will never run as smoothly. Thank you for teaching all of us. Enjoy the slow mornings." Sign it from the team, with first names if they fit.
Can coworkers chip in for a boss's retirement gift?
5 CFR 2635.304(c), in the federal executive branch's ethics rules, says "an employee may make a voluntary contribution of a nominal amount to an appropriate gift to an official superior" "On a special, infrequent occasion as described in paragraph (b) of this section." Paragraph (b) names "retirement, resignation, or transfer." Part 2635 is titled "Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch". Check the current rule with the agency's ethics official.
