Logo Mug Printing Compared: Sublimation vs Laser Engraving vs Screen Print, and Ceramic vs Stainless vs Enamel

Updated

In short

A sublimation mug carries a full-color design heat-pressed into a polyester coating (Mimaki lists 190 degrees for 3 minutes). Laser engraving burns away a mug's coating or glaze in one tone. Screen printing lays down one ink color at a time and is fired in a kiln. Care depends on each mug's own rating, not the method's name.

We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too. Every outside fact comes from its source's own page, read Oct 29, 2026.

Key facts (as of Oct 29, 2026)

  • Sublimation: Mimaki's mug instructions: "[Transfer conditions] Temperature: 190 degrees Time: 3 minutes", and "A mug without polyester coating is not available" (Mimaki).
  • No white ink: sublimation printing methods "don't use a white underbase" (Printful), so white in a logo shows the mug's own white.
  • Laser engraving: "The laser burns away the outer colored coating, revealing the shiny stainless steel underneath" (Creality, a laser-engraver maker).
  • Setup for a promo imprint: 4imprint's setup charge "covers the material and time to make the screen, pad or die that is needed to put your specific logo on a specific product" (4imprint).
  • Care differs by seller: Custom Ink lists its Full Color 11 oz Ceramic Mug as "Microwave safe" and recommends hand washing "To ensure a long-lasting design" (Custom Ink); Vistaprint lists its custom 11 oz mug as "Dishwasher- & microwave-safe" (Vistaprint). Neither page names its print method.

Where we fit: we print your logo by sublimation, small and in full color, on an 11 oz white ceramic mug, with no setup and no minimum, then pack it with Ghirardelli cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles in a matte-black magnetic box and ship it to each address on your list: $35 per box, delivered. See the logo mug gift box with Ghirardelli cocoa, Lindt truffles and a personal card.

What Is a Sublimation Mug?

A sublimation mug is a mug made to take one kind of ink. Mimaki, which makes sublimation printers, describes the process for a mug in four steps: print the design mirrored on transfer paper, cut it out, tape it to a "Polyester coated" mug with heat-resistant tape, and press it at 190 degrees for 3 minutes. "Please use a mug for sublimation transfer. A mug without polyester coating is not available."

The ink doesn't sit on top like paint: it "transforms into a gas and fuses into the synthetic fabric" under high heat, as the University of Florida's Marston Makerspace puts it. On a mug, the polyester coating plays the part of the fabric.

Two things follow: full color, since the printer lays down a whole logo or photo at once, and no white, since sublimation methods "don't use a white underbase" (Printful), so white in a design shows the mug itself.

How Laser Engraving and Screen Printing Work

Laser engraving removes material. On a powder-coated stainless mug, "The laser burns away the outer colored coating, revealing the shiny stainless steel underneath," and a "rotary attachment" spins the cup under the beam (Creality). On glazed ceramic, Mugstore, a UK mug printer, says "The laser carves an embossed image into the glaze, exposing the white clay biscuit underneath," and the mug is then "fired at a high temperature to seal the outer layer" (Mugstore). Either way the logo is one tone: the color of what's underneath.

Screen printing adds ink, one color per screen. Mugstore describes direct screen printing on ceramic: each color in the design gets its own screen, each pass prints one color, and the mug is "left to dry for around 24 hours to harden" before the next color, then fired in a kiln. For full-color work it uses printed transfers instead, which fuse into the glaze "As the kiln temperature rises to 800 C."

Why that means minimums. The screen is made for your logo alone. 4imprint's setup charge "covers the material and time to make the screen, pad or die"; spread over 72 mugs, $55 is about $0.76 a mug, and on one mug it's $55.

Which Lasts Longer: Sublimation, Engraving or Screen Print?

No independent wash test we found compares the three methods on the same mug. What each maker says:

  • Laser engraving on steel: "a permanent modification that cannot be easily removed, as it physically etches the design into the metal by burning away the outer powder coating" (Creality).
  • Fired screen print and transfers: the enamels "are fused into the surface of the ware glaze to form the finished print" (Mugstore).
  • Printed 11 oz mugs at Custom Ink: "To ensure a long-lasting design, we recommend hand wash only," on both its Full Color 11 oz Ceramic Mug (which it also lists as "Microwave safe") and its 11 oz Glossy Ceramic Mug (Custom Ink). Its dye-decorated Dye Blast mug carries the same line (Custom Ink).
  • Vistaprint's custom 11 oz mug: its page lists it as "Dishwasher- & microwave-safe".

So the honest answer to "Are sublimation mugs dishwasher safe?" is: read the rating of the mug you're buying. Two big sellers of printed 11 oz mugs (neither names its print method) gave different washing advice on Oct 29, 2026.

For a client gift, the question is what the logo should look like. A one-tone engraving shows the steel; a small full-color logo shows your brand in its own colors. Emily Post's guidance for logo gifts covers both: "well made, in tasteful colors and with the logo understated enough not to look like an advertisement" (Emily Post Institute).

Setting up engraving yourself means a laser with a rotary attachment: Creality's Falcon2 22W kit with rotary listed at $599 on its own store on Oct 29, down from $919 (Creality), before the powder-coated mugs.

Why Ours Is Sublimation on White Ceramic

  • No setup, so no minimum. Nothing is made for your logo alone: no screen, no plate, which is why one box is a complete order (no minimum, explained).
  • Your logo in its own colors, small. It prints up to 2 × 1.5 in on the front, or on both sides at no extra cost; you choose Small (up to 1½ in wide, the default), Medium or Large in the mug preview.
  • White shows as the mug. Sublimation can't print white, so white in your logo shows the mug's own white. The logo file guide shows what that means for your file.
  • Care, plainly. We don't publish a care rating for our mug yet, so we make no claims about how its print holds up to machine washing or heating. Until we publish one, our suggestion is to wash it by hand.
  • Packed for ceramic. The mug stands on a 2 in foam pad, in a 1 in foam collar, with a 1 in foam pad on its rim (how to ship a mug without breaking).

Can I Print and Pack Logo Mug Gifts Myself?

Yes: you can order printed mugs by any of these methods and pack the gifts yourself, and by our estimate 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work, plus a week or more waiting for supplies to arrive.

  • The steps, by our estimate: a mug printer and its proof (about 1 hour); about 8 separate supply orders for boxes, tissue, seals, cards, foam, cartons, crinkle and treats (about 1 hour); the address list and 25 labels (about 1½ hours); 25 cards (about 45 minutes); packing at about 8 minutes a box (about 3½ hours); drop-off and 25 tracking numbers (about 1 hour).
  • The cost: about $38 a box with USPS counter postage (about $34 with commercial postage), with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels, with leftovers (DIY vs ordering, every price linked, as of Oct 29, 2026). Per box, it comes out about even with our $35, before your time and with the cash up front.
  • One slip costs a second round: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again.

Ordering from us, by contrast: upload a logo (or type your website), paste the list, check the preview, pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

Which Method Fits Your Need?

  • A one-tone, engraved logo on an insulated steel mug: laser engraving, from a promo seller with a minimum (24 for 4imprint's 12 oz camper mug) or a laser of your own.
  • Hundreds of identical one- or two-color mugs at one address: a promo seller's imprint, such as 4imprint's 11 oz mug at $1.19 to $1.75 before setup and shipping.
  • A photo or a full-color logo on one mug for yourself: sublimation from a print-on-demand shop; where to buy one: where to order branded mug gifts. Every kind of gift seller, side by side: compare client gift options.
  • A full-color logo, small, on a mug that ships as a finished gift to each client's own address, from 1 box: that is the order Personalized Gifts Delivered is built for, at $35 per box, delivered, with no minimum.

What to Know Before You Order

  • One mug, one method. Ours is an 11 oz white ceramic mug printed by sublimation; we don't engrave, screen print or sell metal mugs. Every mug in an order carries the same logo.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
  • Where we ship. The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; we ship from New York. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits

The printing method decides how the logo looks. Everything after it decides whether the mug is a gift when it's opened. A Personalized Gifts Delivered order covers both: your logo printed small by sublimation on an 11 oz white ceramic mug, a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside it, black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal, and your message printed on a textured card that greets each person by first name, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.

You see the mug and every card before you pay. Each box is packed by hand in foam and shipped to its own address, in a plain white carton whose return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com. Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it. When the boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box. The price is $35 per box, delivered, whether you send 1 or 50, with no setup fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sublimation mug?
A sublimation mug is a mug with a polyester coating that takes sublimation ink: the design is printed on transfer paper, then heat-pressed into the coating. Mimaki, a maker of sublimation printers, lists 190 degrees for 3 minutes and says "A mug without polyester coating is not available."
Which lasts longer, sublimation or laser engraving?
No independent test we found compares them, so the makers' own words are what there is: Creality calls laser engraving on a powder-coated tumbler "a permanent modification", and Custom Ink recommends hand washing its printed 11 oz mugs "to ensure a long-lasting design" (as of Oct 29, 2026).
Are sublimation mugs dishwasher safe?
It depends on the mug and its seller's rating, not on the word sublimation: on Oct 29, 2026, Vistaprint listed its custom 11 oz mug as "Dishwasher- & microwave-safe", while Custom Ink listed its Full Color 11 oz Ceramic Mug as "Microwave safe" and recommended "hand wash only" to ensure a long-lasting design. Neither page names its print method.
Is a ceramic, stainless or enamel mug a better gift?
A ceramic mug takes a full-color print, a double-wall powder-coated stainless mug takes a one-tone laser engraving, and an enamel mug is steel that "may chip if dropped" (WebstaurantStore's enamelware care sheet). 4imprint's laser-engraved 12 oz stainless camper mug started at 24, $20.19 each, on Oct 29, 2026.
Why do screen-printed logo mugs have a minimum order?
Screen printing makes a separate screen for each color of each logo (Mugstore), and promo sellers charge a setup for it: 4imprint's setup charge "covers the material and time to make the screen, pad or die that is needed to put your specific logo on a specific product." Its one-color 11 oz mug starts at 72, with a $55 setup.
Who prints a logo mug by sublimation with no minimum and ships it as a gift?
Personalized Gifts Delivered prints your logo by sublimation on an 11 oz white ceramic mug, with no minimum, and ships it to each address on your list in a gift box with Ghirardelli hot cocoa, 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles and your printed card, at $35 per box, delivered.
