We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address, so this guide describes our order page. The file rules hold for any mug printer.
Key facts
- Files the order page takes: PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, Illustrator (.ai), WebP, GIF or an iPhone photo (HEIC), up to 20 MB. You can also paste a copied image, or type your website and we'll find your logo there.
- Logo sizes: Small, up to 1½ in wide (the default); Medium, up to 1¾ in wide; Large, up to 2 × 1.5 in. Front only, or the same logo on both sides at no extra cost.
- The pixel rule: "A common benchmark for print materials is 300 DPI (dots per inch), but the exact number can vary by product, print method and viewing distance" (Vistaprint).
- The warning: our order page flags a logo with fewer than 600 pixels across, counting only the part that prints.
- No white ink: sublimation can't print white, so white in your logo shows the mug's own white.
- The proof: the mug preview is your proof; we don't send a separate one.
How to Get Your Logo Ready, Step by Step
- Find your best file. Look for a vector file first: SVG, PDF or Illustrator (.ai). If you only have a picture file, use the largest PNG you can find.
- Check its size in pixels. Multiply the logo's printed width in inches by 300. A 1½ in logo needs about 450 pixels across; a 2 in logo needs about 600.
- Add it on the order page. Upload the file, paste a copied image, or type your website and we'll find your logo there.
- Choose a look and a size. Original colors, Black, Navy, Gold-tone or Outline; Small, Medium or Large; front only or both sides.
- Check the background and any white. A white background is removed by default; white inside the logo shows the mug's white.
- Check the preview as your proof. Look at the size, the position and the edges, on the back too if it prints on both sides, before you go on to your address list.
The quality worry is a real one. A poster in r/smallbusiness, looking for a printer for client gifts such as mugs with their logo, wanted gifts that "look polished and won't arrive scratched or flimsy". One reply's advice: "Just make sure to upload high-res files or your logo might look pixelated on the mugs" (Reddit, Dec 1, 2025). The steps above are how to do that.
What Logo File Works Best on a Mug?
A vector file, if you have one. Vistaprint's guide puts the difference this way: "Raster files (JPEG and PNG) are made from a fixed grid of pixels, while vector files (SVG) are made from scalable lines, curves and shapes" (Vistaprint). A vector logo has no pixel count to run out of; a raster logo does.

| File | What it is | Sharp at our largest size (2 in)? | What to know |
| SVG | Vector | Yes | The website finder can pick one up from your site |
| PDF | Vector, if the logo was drawn as one | Yes, when it's a true vector | A photo saved as a PDF is still a photo |
| Illustrator (.ai) | Vector | Yes | Opens when it was saved with PDF compatibility; the page says so if it can't read one |
| PNG | Raster | With 600 pixels across or more | Can have a see-through background |
| JPG | Raster | With 600 pixels across or more | Always has a background; a white one is removed in the preview |
| WebP, GIF | Raster | With 600 pixels across or more | Web copies can be small; check the size |
| iPhone photo (HEIC) | Raster | Depends on the photo | Our suggestion: use it for a photo, and a logo file for a logo |
| EPS, Photoshop (.psd) | Not opened by our page | n/a | The page says so and offers the website finder or pasting instead |
One trap: renaming isn't converting. "Saving a JPEG as a PDF or changing its file extension does not turn it into a vector graphic," as Vistaprint puts it. Our order page doesn't flag a PDF or SVG as small, because a true vector file can't be, so make sure yours really is one: zoom in as far as your viewer goes, and if the edges stay smooth, it's vector.
How Many Pixels Does a Logo Need?
About 300 for every inch it prints. Vistaprint gives the formula: "Required pixels = print size in inches × target DPI." On our mug, that works out like this:

| Logo size |
Fits within |
Pixels across for 300 per inch |
| Small (the default) |
Up to 1½ in wide |
About 450 |
| Medium |

About 525 |
| Large |
Up to 2 × 1.5 in |
About 600 |
Our order page checks this for you. When a picture file has fewer than 600 pixels across (only the part that prints counts, not empty space around it), it says, for example: "Your logo file is small (320 pixels across), so it may print a little soft. A larger file, a PDF or an SVG prints sharper, and Small suits it best." You can still order. By the 300-per-inch rule, 450 to 600 pixels is enough for Small.
Where to find a bigger copy:
- Your designer or brand kit. Ask for an SVG or a PDF. If they send an EPS, ask for one of those instead, because our page can't open EPS files.
- Your website. Type its address on the order page and we'll find the logo there and show you what we found. If it can't find one it can use, it says so and offers upload or paste.
- Not a screenshot. Vistaprint's advice: "Start with the largest logo file that you have, avoiding screenshots, social media downloads or files that have already been enlarged."
Enlarging a small file doesn't add detail: "enlarging a 1,200px file to 8” would reduce its resolution to 150 DPI," in Vistaprint's example. The fix is a bigger original, not a bigger copy.
How Big Should a Logo Be on a Mug?
Small but clear. In a survey reported in PPAI Magazine (Oct 2025), 44% preferred subtle branding over big, bold logos, while nearly 60% said a clear, visible logo helped them remember the brand (PPAI Magazine, Oct 2025, a trade-association survey). A logo the size of a signature does both jobs.
On our 11 oz white ceramic mug, the logo prints within an area up to 2 × 1.5 in, in one of three sizes:
Scroll sideways to see the whole table →
| Size |
Fits within |
When it suits |
| Small (the default) |
Up to 1½ in wide |
Client thank-yous: subtle, still easy to read |
| Medium |
Up to 1¾ in wide |
A logo with fine lettering that needs a little more room |
| Large |
Up to 2 × 1.5 in |
A simple mark you want seen from across a desk |
It prints on the front only (the default) or, at no extra cost, the same logo on the back too. Every mug in one order carries the same logo, size and placement. Why we keep it small, and where else a logo can go: logo or no logo on client gifts.
What Does the Mug Preview Fix for You?
You pick a look as well as a size, and the preview shows your own logo in each one:
| Look |
What prints |
| Original colors |
Your logo as you gave it |
| Black |
The whole logo in black |
| Navy |
The whole logo in navy |
| Gold-tone |
The whole logo in a printed gold color, not metallic foil |
| Outline |
Only the logo's outline, drawn in black |
The preview also handles three things you would otherwise have to fix in the file:
- Backgrounds. If your logo sits on white, the white background is removed by default. A solid colored background prints as a block of color unless you remove it.
- White in the logo. Sublimation can't print white, so white parts show the mug's own white. An all-white logo can't print in its original colors, so it starts in Black.
- Looks that don't suit the file. Only looks that suit your logo are offered; a photo or gradient logo has no Outline option.
Sending a photo or a few words instead of a logo? The personal version prints a photo or design up to about 3 in tall, and its own photo guide covers what prints well: a photo mug for grandparents far away.
Do You Get a Proof Before the Mug Is Printed?
Yes: the mug preview is your proof. Before you pay, it shows your logo on the mug at the size, look and placement you chose, and your message on the card. We print the logo file you give us, and we don't send a separate proof, so check:
- Size: does it read as a signature, not an ad?
- Position: centered where you expect, front and back if it prints on both sides.
- Edges: fine lines and small text still clear at the size you chose.
- Background: no leftover box of color around the logo.
What's covered if the print goes wrong: if the print doesn't match the preview you approved (the wrong design, or a missing, crooked, misplaced, smudged or streaked print), send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship that box free (limited warranty). Our warranty is just as clear about what isn't a print error: small color differences between your screen and the printed mug, white in your design, "a soft print of a low-resolution file", and a typo in your design. That's why the pixel check comes before the preview.
How Does the Logo Fit Into the Order?
Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.
The logo is the first thing you add, and the preview is where you approve it. Upload only a logo you own or have permission to use. More questions about the logo and the preview are answered on the gift box FAQ.
Doing it yourself starts with the same file, then a printer search. By our estimate, finding a mug printer, comparing minimums, uploading the logo and approving a proof is about 1 hour: the first step of about 9 hours of hands-on work for 25 logo mug gift boxes, with the supplies, cards, labels and packing taking the rest (DIY vs ordering). On our page, the preview is the proof, and the rest of the box comes with it.
What to know before you order
- Print area. Up to 2 × 1.5 in, by design: the logo reads as a signature, not an ad.
- No white ink or foil. Sublimation can't print white, and our Gold-tone is a printed color, not foil. The preview shows how your logo prints without them.
- One logo per order. Every mug in one order carries the same logo, size and placement; a second logo is a second order, and one box is a complete order.
- The mug only. We print the logo on the mug; the box and the card carry none, and the card carries your message.
Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits: From Your Logo File to a Finished Gift
You bring the file, and the order page checks it with you: it warns you when a picture file is small, removes a white background, offers only the looks that suit your logo, and shows the mug at the size you chose before you pay. Then we print it by sublimation on an 11 oz white ceramic mug, pack it by hand in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid with Ghirardelli cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside the mug and your printed card on top, and ship each box to its own address. If the print doesn't match the preview you approved, we reship that box free (photo within 7 days of delivery). It's $35 per box, delivered, with no minimum: see the custom logo mug gift box, shipped to each client, no minimum.
