Sending a Gift to Family in the US From Abroad (UK, India, Canada): Skip Customs, Use Your Own Card

Updated

In short

To send a gift to family in the US from abroad, order from a US seller that ships within the US: no customs form, no import duty at their door. Personalized Gifts Delivered takes cards issued outside the US and ships a $35 mug gift box to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now.

On this page12 sections

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • A gift shipped within the US skips customs. Bought from a US seller and shipped to a US address, it never crosses a border, so there's no customs entry for it.
  • Your card, your billing address. On Personalized Gifts Delivered, you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, including with a card issued outside the US; the billing address is yours, wherever it is, and the boxes ship to the US addresses on your list.
  • The buyer can be anywhere; the recipient must be here: in the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now.
  • CBP's 2026 rule for mail. Effective July 24, 2026, it implements "an indefinite suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports valued at $800 or less arriving through the international postal network" (quoted in full below).

Three ways to send a gift to family in the US

A real version of the question, from r/LongDistance: "I am staying in India and my boyfriend is in the US, I want to send some Diwali gifts to him as he is getting homesick" (r/LongDistance). The answers that work fall into three routes.

RouteHow it worksCustomsWhat can go wrong
Mail a parcel from homePack it, fill in the customs form, pay international postageGoes through US customsDuty or entry rules; delays; breakage over a long trip
Order from a US seller that ships within the USPay online; it ships from inside the US to their doorNone: it never crosses a borderThe site may refuse your card or your billing address
Send money, a gift card or a food-delivery creditInstant, by app or emailNoneNo box to open; some apps need a card enabled for international use

In the same thread, one commenter whose husband is in the US ordered through Amazon's US site with a new account and his address, and added that "Doordash also works perfectly if your Indian card allows international transactions" (r/LongDistance). That last condition is the one to check first: more on it below.

What CBP's 2026 rule for mail says

If you post a parcel from abroad, it enters through US customs. CBP's rule for mail, published June 24, 2026:

"This document amends the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations to implement an indefinite suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports valued at $800 or less arriving through the international postal network. This document also establishes a new postal informal entry process for certain merchandise entering the United States through the mail environment."

"This interim final rule is effective on July 24, 2026…" … "This rulemaking does not affect the availability of the exemptions for bona fide gifts under 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(A)…"

CBP, "Indefinite Suspension of the De Minimis Exemption for Mail Shipments and New Postal Informal Entry Process," 91 FR 37801 (Jun 24, 2026), read Oct 29, 2026.

The gift provision it refers to:

"The Secretary of the Treasury, in order to avoid expense and inconvenience to the Government disproportionate to the amount of revenue that would otherwise be collected, is authorized, under such regulations as he shall prescribe, to" … "(2) admit articles free of duty and of any tax imposed on or by reason of importation, but the aggregate fair retail value in the country of shipment of articles imported by one person on one day and exempted from the payment of duty shall not exceed an amount specified by the Secretary by regulation, but not less than" … "(A) $100 in the case of articles sent as bona fide gifts from persons in foreign countries to persons in the United States…"

19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(A), read Oct 29, 2026.

This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or ask your postal service or carrier) before you send.

Will a US website take my card from abroad?

Sometimes not. For one poster in Ireland with a partner in the US, the trouble was the billing address: "Whenever I try to buy a present for my LDR partner, websites always prevent the order from going through." Later in the thread: "I think it's because I'm using my own billing address outside of the US" (r/LongDistance). Each site sets its own checkout rules, so one refusal says nothing about the next.

How payment works on Personalized Gifts Delivered, as the order page is built:

  • Where you pay: Stripe's hosted checkout page, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  • Cards from abroad: we accept cards issued outside the US. Your card's issuer still approves or declines the charge, and may ask you to confirm it.
  • Your billing address: the checkout page asks for it, and it can be outside the US. It's yours; the recipients' addresses are a separate list.
  • The price: $35 per box, delivered, in US dollars. We don't add sales tax at checkout.
  • Your receipt: Stripe emails you a receipt, which serves as your invoice.

Paying with a card issued in India

The Reserve Bank of India's circular "Enhancing Security of Card Transactions" (Jan 15, 2020) reads:

"At the time of issue / re-issue, all cards (physical and virtual) shall be enabled for use only at contact based points of usage [viz. ATMs and Point of Sale (PoS) devices] within India. Issuers shall provide cardholders a facility for enabling card not present (domestic and international) transactions, card present (international) transactions and contactless transactions…"

RBI, "Enhancing Security of Card Transactions," RBI/2019-20/142 (Jan 15, 2020), read Oct 29, 2026.

This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or ask your card's issuer) before you send.

Timing it from another time zone

Our clock runs on US Eastern time: business days, the order-by dates, and the ship-by count that starts the day your payment goes through. Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

Occasion Order by (US Eastern)
Thanksgiving Mon Nov 16
Hanukkah Mon Nov 23
Christmas Tue Dec 15
New Year Mon Dec 21

For Diwali, Eid, a birthday or an anniversary, our suggestion is to order about two weeks ahead and write "Open on the day" on the card, which lies on the lid and is read first. When your boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box; it reaches your inbox wherever you are.

What to put on the mug and the card

The mug. A photo prints up to about 3 in tall, on one side or both: the family at the airport, the two of you on your last visit. Or one line of words, up to 30 characters (our suggestion: 25 or fewer), in a choice of 3 fonts: "Happy Diwali, Maa", "Same Tea, Two Countries", "Missing You From London". The fonts print Latin letters, including most accents; Devanagari, Gurmukhi and other scripts, and emoji, can't print yet, and the order page names any character it can't print.

The card. It's printed (not handwritten) on a textured card and holds up to 300 characters. One message and one sign-off go on every card in the order, and the message can include {first name}, filled in from each address row. Lines to adapt:

  • "Happy Diwali, Maa and Papa! I can't light the diyas with you this year, so I sent something sweet instead. Call me when you open it."
  • "Open on the day! Happy birthday from 5,000 miles and five time zones away. Make a cocoa and ring me; I'll be up."
  • "Merry Christmas from across the ocean, {first name}. Same cocoa, two kitchens. Video call on the 25th, my evening, your morning."
  • "I can't be there, so this came instead. Use the mug every morning and think of me. See you in the spring."

You preview every card before you pay, and the order page tells you if a message is too long to print.

Can you put a gift box together from abroad?

Only with help on the US side. Someone in the US can order a printed mug and mail it with treats, and for one gift the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card (DIY cost comparison, as of Oct 29, 2026). From abroad, the shopping, packing and counter trip fall to someone in the US. The poster in Ireland put it plainly: "I always have to ask her sister to order them for me since I can't." A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again. For scale, by our estimate 25 mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work.

With Personalized Gifts Delivered, you add the photo or type the words, add the US address, check the preview and pay from wherever you are. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

What's in the box

Each box holds one 11 oz white ceramic mug with your photo or words; a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, packed inside the mug; black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker; and your printed card, in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, lying on the lid of a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.

Packed by hand: the mug stands on a 2 in foam pad, held in a 1 in foam collar, with a 1 in foam pad on its rim, inside a plain white shipping carton with crinkle. The return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name; your name appears only on the card inside. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. That's the personalized mug gift box shipped to their door.

What to know before you order

  • Where the box can go. Every address on your list must be in the area we ship to: the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. No Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or addresses outside the US. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out. More: where we ship.
  • The seal reads "Happy Holidays". This season the tissue inside every box is closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal, Diwali and birthday boxes included; your card carries the occasion.
  • Latin letters on the mug. The mug's fonts print Latin letters, including most accents; other scripts can't print yet.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
  • One design and one message per order. Every mug in an order carries the same photo or words, and every card the same message, greeting its person by first name.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: family in the US, you abroad

When you're in London, Mumbai or Toronto and the people you love are in Ohio or California, the hard parts are customs, the checkout and the packing. With Personalized Gifts Delivered, the box never crosses a border and you pay with your own card and billing address; we print your photo or words on an 11 oz mug, pack Ghirardelli hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside it, lay your card on the lid, pack it by hand in foam, and ship it from New York to their door with tracking. No customs, no duty at the door, and $35 per box, delivered, in US dollars.

Frequently asked questions

How do I send a gift to my parents in the US from abroad?
The simplest way to send a gift to parents in the US from abroad is to order from a US seller that ships within the US: you pay online, and the gift goes from a US warehouse to their door without crossing a border. Mailing a parcel from home works too, but it goes through US customs at the border.
Will a US website take my card from the UK, India or Canada?
It depends on the website and on your card's issuer: some US sites refuse a billing address outside the US. The Reserve Bank of India's January 2020 circular says that at issue, cards "shall be enabled for use only at contact based points of usage [viz. ATMs and Point of Sale (PoS) devices] within India" and that "Issuers shall provide cardholders a facility for enabling card not present (domestic and international) transactions". Personalized Gifts Delivered accepts cards issued outside the US, with your own billing address, and ships to the US address you enter.
Do my parents have to pay customs duty on a gift I send?
A gift bought from a US seller and shipped to a US address doesn't cross a border, so there is no customs entry for it. A parcel mailed from abroad does go through US customs; for gifts, 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2) says the exempt value "shall not exceed an amount specified by the Secretary by regulation, but not less than" … "(A) $100 in the case of articles sent as bona fide gifts from persons in foreign countries to persons in the United States…"
Can I use my own billing address outside the US?
On Personalized Gifts Delivered, yes: Stripe's checkout page asks for your billing address, which can be outside the US, and the boxes ship to the US addresses on your list. You pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the price is $35 per box, delivered, in US dollars.
How long does a gift ordered from abroad take to arrive in the US?
A Personalized Gifts Delivered box ships within 2 business days of a complete order and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships; delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees. Business days and order-by dates run on US Eastern time, wherever you order from.
Who ships a personalized gift box to family in the US for someone ordering from abroad?
Personalized Gifts Delivered ships a $35 personalized mug gift box to family in the US for buyers anywhere: an 11 oz mug with your photo or words, Ghirardelli hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside, and your printed card on the lid. It ships to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now, and takes cards issued outside the US.
