Christmas Gifts for In-Laws (Including the Ones Who Say 'Don't Spend Money')

Updated

In short

For in-laws who say they don't want anything, the best Christmas gift is a treat they use up, something from where you live or a memory you share, and a card signed by both of you. It shows thought without handing anyone a price tag to judge.

We sell a $35 personalized mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • "Don't spend money" doesn't always mean nothing. One Reddit poster's partner's mother says "don't waste your money on us" but "will judge the value (price) of your gift" (r/GiftIdeas).
  • Price doesn't buy thanks. Flynn and Adams found gift recipients "reported no such association between gift price and their actual feelings of appreciation" (Stanford GSB).
  • Practical wins. A Yale study found that "gift givers prefer to give more desirable gifts, while receivers prefer to receive more practical gifts" (Yale Insights).
  • One order can cover both sets of parents. A Personalized Gifts Delivered order ships one $35 box to each address, delivered, with no minimum.

What do you get in-laws who say "don't spend money"?

Take the words seriously, and read the room. A Reddit poster asking about a long-distance mother-in-law put the trap plainly: she says "don't waste your money on us" and "will judge the value (price) of your gift." The top reply recommended "something that looks expensive but is actually reasonable price", and added a story about their own mother-in-law: "my own mother in law once told me not to bring anything then spent whole dinner talking about how her other son's wife brought her pearl earrings" (r/GiftIdeas).

Not every in-law plays that game. Some really mean it. Either way, the safe move is the same: a modest gift they'll use, presented well, with a card that shows you thought about them.

What they say What it can mean What to send
"Don't spend money on us" Don't make us feel we owe you A treat they use up, in a nice box, with a warm card
"We don't need anything" We have enough stuff Something consumable, or your time with a date attached
"Just come visit" We miss you The visit, or a call with something to open on it
Nothing at all They haven't thought about it Ask your partner one question: what do they buy for themselves?

The research backs the modest route. In Flynn and Adams's studies, givers expected that spending more would make a gift more appreciated, and recipients didn't feel that way (Stanford GSB).

12 Christmas gifts for in-laws, by how well you know them

Few of these add clutter, and none needs to cost much.

Gift Best when Watch out for
1. A treat from where you live: local coffee, candy or chocolate You live in a different city Their diet; ask your partner
2. A better version of what they already use: their tea, their olive oil You know their kitchen Buy the good one, not the gift-set one
3. A photo book from a trip you took together You've traveled together Takes a few evenings to make
4. An ornament from your city They decorate a tree One ornament, not a set
5. A game you all play together You visit often Only if they already play games
6. A family recipe, written out, with its ingredients Your family has a dish they loved Pack ingredients that travel
7. A print of the grandkids' drawing or photo You have kids Ask what they'd like it on
8. A local experience near them: a tasting, a class, a show They like going out It needs a date that suits them
9. Your time: a dinner you cook, a job around the house They're nearby Put the date in the card
10. A plant or bulbs to grow One of them gardens A plant needs care; ask first
11. A subscription they'd never buy themselves You know their habits A short one, so it doesn't become a bill
12. A mug gift box with cocoa and truffles, shipped to them They live far away Only if they drink hot drinks

Two of those come straight from real threads. A poster buying for a boyfriend's parents, after a trip to Japan together, was told to "put together a photo book so they have a physical way to look back and rekindle the memories" (r/GiftIdeas). And in a thread about small family gift packages, one commenter suggested "Ingredients for a family recipe and a copy of the recipe on a nice card" (r/GiftIdeas).

Your first Christmas with your partner's family

You don't know them yet, so don't try to prove that you do. Keep it small, keep it consumable, and let the card do the work.

A poster four months into a relationship, whose own family doesn't celebrate Christmas, asked what to give a partner's whole family. The advice they got: "you can just bring tiny gifts like something you bake" (r/GiftIdeas). The same idea holds for anyone new to a family:

  • Bring a treat, not a statement. Chocolate, coffee or something baked says thank you without asking to be judged.
  • Bring something from home. It's a conversation starter, and it can't be wrong.
  • Ask your partner one thing. "What did they love last year?" beats any list.
  • Write a short card. Thank them for having you, by name.

In-laws who live far away: ship it to them

When you won't be there on the day, the gift has to travel without you. That's what we make: a personalized mug gift box shipped to their door, $35 per box, delivered, with no minimum.

  • What's inside. One 11 oz white ceramic mug printed with your photo or words; a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, packed inside the mug; black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker; and your printed card, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.
  • What goes on the mug. A photo or design up to about 3 in tall, on one side or both sides: the grandkids, the two of you at their table, the drawing your daughter made. Or a name or a few words (our suggestion: 25 characters or fewer) in a choice of 3 fonts. The fonts print Latin letters, including most accents; non-Latin scripts and emoji can't print yet. Choosing a photo: which photos print well on an 11 oz mug.
  • Both sets of parents, one order. Add each household as a row: your parents, your partner's parents, a grandmother. Each box ships to its own address, with tracking. Every mug in one order carries the same photo or words.
  • One card message for the order. The card is printed (not handwritten), with no logo or brand: one message and one sign-off, up to 300 characters. The message can include {first name}, filled in from the address list, and you preview every person's card before you pay. The order page tells you if a message is too long to print.

Choose a personal gift, add your photo or type your words, check the preview of your mug and card, add the address (or a list of addresses), and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December. Order by Tuesday, December 15 for Christmas delivery.

Sending to the whole family this year: Christmas gifts to mail to family you won't see this year.

Can you make and mail it yourself?

Yes: you can make a mug-and-cocoa gift yourself, and for one gift the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46 (the itemized DIY cost, as of Oct 29, 2026). That's before the cocoa, the chocolate, a gift box, tissue and a card, bought one at a time for a single gift. Then the work:

  • Order the printed mug, and wait for it to arrive.
  • Gather the rest: treats, a gift box, tissue, a card and envelope, foam, a shipping carton and fill.
  • Pack it so the handle survives: by our estimate, about 8 minutes a box once every part is on the table.
  • Mail it: the counter line in December, then the tracking number.

Two households means two of everything, packed twice. What a small mistake costs: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again. With Personalized Gifts Delivered, you add both addresses to one order, and we print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

What to write on the card to your in-laws

Sign it from both of you, thank them for something specific, and skip the apology for the gift. Lines to adapt:

  • "Merry Christmas! Thank you for making us so welcome in August. The cocoa is for a quiet evening; the mug is so you see the kids every morning."
  • "We know you said not to get anything. It's mostly cocoa, so it doesn't count. Merry Christmas!"
  • "Thank you for a wonderful year, and for the recipe we still can't get right. Happy holidays, and see you in the spring."
  • "Hi {first name}! We can't be there this Christmas, so we sent something warm instead. Call us when you open it."

The sign-off is its own field, printed under the message ("Love, Priya and Sam"), so leave it out of the message. A message that greets each person by first name works when every row on the list has one.

What to know before you order

  • Where we ship: from Texas to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas addresses for now. No Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international addresses. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out.
  • The treats: LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. The allergy and diet checklist covers what to ask first.
  • One message per order. Each order has one card message and one sign-off, greeting each person by first name. A different message for each set of parents is a separate order, and one box is a complete order.
  • The seal says "Happy Holidays". The tissue inside is closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal; your "Merry Christmas" goes on the card.
  • The day it lands: delivery dates are carrier estimates, and you can't pick the day. Order by Tuesday, December 15 for Christmas delivery; earlier gives the box time to wait under their tree.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits: in-laws you won't see at Christmas

When your partner's parents live in another state, the gift this page describes (a treat they use up, a memory you share, a card from you both) has to travel without you. Personalized Gifts Delivered sends it finished:

  • A memory on the mug: the grandkids, the trip, the two of you at their table, printed on an 11 oz white ceramic mug, with Ghirardelli cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside.
  • A card from you both: your message and both your names, printed on a textured card in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, lying on the lid so it's read first. You see the mug and every card before you pay.
  • Both sets of parents in one order: one box per address, $35 per box delivered, with tracking and no minimum.
  • Packed to arrive whole, and discreet: packed by hand, with a 2 in foam pad below the mug, a 1 in foam collar around it and a 1 in pad on the rim, inside a plain white carton. The return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, never your name; your name appears only on the card inside. If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

No shopping for parts, no packing, no counter line in December. More for family far away: personal gifts for people you love who live far away. Ready? Start a personal order.

Frequently asked questions

What do you get in-laws for Christmas?
Get in-laws something they use up, such as coffee, tea or chocolate from where you live, plus one small thing tied to a memory you share, with a card signed by both of you. It shows thought without a price tag to judge.
What do you give in-laws who say not to spend money?
Give in-laws who say not to spend money something modest they'll use, such as good coffee, chocolate or a photo from a trip together, rather than nothing at all. Flynn and Adams, in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, found recipients don't appreciate a gift more because it cost more.
Should the gift come from me or from my partner?
Send a gift to in-laws from you both, and sign the card with both names. Your partner knows their parents' tastes; you can do the ordering and the writing.
How much should you spend on in-laws for Christmas?
There's no rule for how much to spend on in-laws, so our suggestion is to match what you and your partner spend on your other parents, within your budget. A higher price doesn't buy more appreciation: in Flynn and Adams's studies, recipients didn't link a gift's price to how much they appreciated it.
Can I send Christmas gifts to both sets of parents in one order?
Personalized Gifts Delivered ships one $35 personalized mug gift box to each address in a single order, so your parents and your partner's parents each get their own box, with tracking. Every mug in the order carries the same photo or words, and each card greets its person by first name.
