Key facts
- October 16, every year. "If the holiday falls on a weekend, it is celebrated on the closest work day," says Hallmark, the greeting-card company (Hallmark, read Oct 29, 2026).
- It started in 1958. "Patricia Bays Haroski, then an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Ill., registered the holiday with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce," choosing October 16, her father's birthday (same page).
- Etiquette says: from the group. "Don't give a gift to your supervisor that's just from you. … Get together with the others in your department and give a gift from the group" (Emily Post Institute, read Oct 29, 2026).
- The federal executive branch writes a number down: "$10 or less per occasion" for items given to an official superior (5 CFR 2635.304(a)), quoted below.
- One box can carry the whole team. A Personalized Gifts Delivered card holds up to 300 characters, enough for a thank-you and a dozen first names.
When Is Boss's Day 2027?
October 16, every year. The date doesn't move, so the weekday does, and Hallmark's rule moves a weekend Boss's Day to the closest work day:

The day is older than the cards for it: "Although the observance of National Boss Day began in 1958, Hallmark first produced Boss Day cards in 1979." Haroski chose her father's birthday "because she felt he was an exemplary boss" (same page).
One date to know for shipping: Monday, October 11, 2027 is Columbus Day, a federal holiday (OPM), so the week of Boss's Day, October 11–15, has four business days, not five.
Is It Appropriate to Give Your Boss a Gift?
Yes, from the group. The Emily Post Institute's answer to "Gifts for bosses: Yes or No?" is a group gift: "Don't give a gift to your supervisor that's just from you. Other employees may resent what they see as an effort to curry favor with the boss. Get together with the others in your department and give a gift from the group" (Emily Post).
Pressure is where it goes wrong. In a 2023 r/managers thread, a poster who had asked their team to chip in for their supervisor's Christmas gift got a blunt answer. One reply: "No one likes being asked to contribute funds for gifts for people who make more money than them, fyi." Another: "Gifts do not flow upwards. Asking subordinates to contribute to a higher up is so inappropriate" (r/managers).
Put the two together (our suggestion): one gift with one card from everyone, never a line of individual presents; optional and private, so nobody knows who gave or how much; modest, because the card does the real work; and specific: "Thanks for fighting for the new hire in March" says more than "Thanks for everything."
How to Do a Group Gift for Boss's Day
- One peer organizes, not a deputy who manages some of the givers, and the boss isn't in the thread.
- Ask privately, once: the plan, a suggested amount, and "any amount, or none, is fine" (our suggestion). Keep who gave what to yourself.
- Choose the gift from what came in. A $35 gift split seven ways is $5 a person; split twelve ways, about $2.92.
- Collect first names if the team is remote. A printed card can list them all; a signed card has to travel desk to desk.
- Give it on the work day, Friday, October 15, in 2027, in a team meeting, so it reads as from the team.

Why it works for a boss |
Watch for |
| A card everyone signs |
The words are the gift; it costs almost nothing |
Generic lines; name something specific |
| Treats or lunch for the whole office |
Shared, so the boss isn't singled out |
Food allergies in the office |
| A plant or a book they mentioned |
Small, personal, easy to agree on |
Taste: ask someone close to them |
| A mug gift box with a team photo or a line the team wrote |
The treat is for the day, the mug stays after; one card names everyone |
LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels |
| A donation in their name |
Nothing to keep, nothing to store |
Pick a cause they've named, not yours |

Gifts to a Boss: What the Federal Rule Says
5 CFR part 2635 is titled "Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch". "Except as provided in this subpart," its general standard says, employees may not "give a gift to or make a contribution toward a gift for an official superior" or "Solicit a contribution from another employee for a gift to either their own or the other employee's official superior" (5 CFR 2635.302(a)).
The exceptions section names what may go up the chain, and its own examples include a coffee mug:
"(a) General exceptions. On an occasional basis, including any occasion on which gifts are traditionally given or exchanged, the following may be given to an official superior or accepted from a subordinate or an employee receiving less pay: (1) Items, other than cash, with an aggregate market value of $10 or less per occasion; (2) Items such as food and refreshments to be shared in the office among several employees" …
"Example 2 to paragraph (a): An employee of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation whose bank examination responsibilities require frequent travel may not bring their supervisor, and the supervisor may not accept, souvenir coffee mugs from each of the cities the employee visits in the course of performing examination duties, even though each of the mugs costs less than $5. Gifts given on this basis are not occasional."
"(c) Voluntary contributions. (1) An employee may solicit voluntary contributions of nominal amounts from fellow employees for an appropriate gift to an official superior" … "(i) On a special, infrequent occasion as described in paragraph (b) of this section; or (ii) On an occasional basis, for items such as food and refreshments to be shared in the office among several employees."
"Example 2 to paragraph (c): An employee of the National Endowment for the Arts may not collect contributions for a Christmas gift for the Chairman. Christmas occurs annually and is not an occasion of personal significance."
5 CFR 2635.304 (eCFR, up to date as of Oct 28, 2026), read Oct 29, 2026.
Paragraph (b), the "special, infrequent occasion" that (c) refers to, names "marriage, illness, bereavement, or the birth or adoption of a child" and "retirement, resignation, or transfer." Your employer may also have its own gift policy; check the handbook or ask HR before you collect. More on the federal rules: gifts to government employees.

What to Write in a Boss's Day Card: 30 Messages
The formula: one specific thing, one thank-you, and the team (our view). Each message below is under 300 characters with no sign-off: on a Personalized Gifts Delivered order the sign-off is its own field ("The Accounts team"), and [Name] becomes your boss's first name. Anything else in brackets goes on the card as you type it.

When to Order for Boss's Day
Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.
There's no way to pick a ship date or a delivery day, so the date you order is the date you choose. For Friday, October 15, 2027, order early, and count Columbus Day on Monday, October 11. Ship the box to the organizer's home and bring it in. Every gift-giving date of the year: the gift calendar.
What Sending It Yourself Takes
Yes: a team can put one mug gift together itself. For one gift, the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, truffles, gift box, tissue or card, bought one at a time (as of Oct 29, 2026). Then someone fills the mug, wraps it so the handle survives, and prints the card with every name spelled right.
At scale the arithmetic is closer: by our estimate, 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work plus a week or more waiting for supplies, and come to about $38 a box with USPS counter postage (about $34 with commercial postage), with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels, as of Oct 29, 2026 (DIY vs ordering). Per box, that's about even with our $35, before your time. What one small mistake costs: a misspelled name on a printed card means printing it again, in the week of the day.
Ordering from us, by contrast: add the team photo or type the line, type the message with everyone's names, check the preview, pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.
What to Know Before You Order
- The seal sticker. The order page names the gold seal sticker that closes the tissue before you pay. While "Happy Holidays" is the only sticker in stock, an October box carries that one; your card carries the Boss's Day words.
- One card, one message. Each order has one message (up to 300 characters) and one sign-off; the order page tells you if a message is too long to print.
- The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
- Gift limits. Each box is $35, delivered. Some employers and industries cap the gifts their people may give or accept; the federal text is quoted above, and more limits, quoted from their sources: client gift limits by industry.
- Where we ship. We ship from New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay.
Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits: One Gift From the Whole Team
A Boss's Day gift works when it's one gift, from everyone, with a card that names them. That's what one Personalized Gifts Delivered box is:
- The mug, designed by the team: an 11 oz white ceramic mug printed with a team photo, a line the team chose, or your company's logo, small.
- Something inside it: a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, under black tissue, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.
- One card for everyone: your message, printed on a textured card in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, lying on the lid so it's read first. A thank-you and a dozen first names fit in up to 300 characters. You see the mug and the card before you pay.
- One price: $35, delivered, and one box is a complete order, with no minimum.
- Packed to protect the mug: by hand, in foam around the mug and on the rim, in a plain white carton whose return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com.
Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. A personalized mug gift box shipped to their door, or send this gift.
