Gift Links vs a Box at the Door: Which Do Clients Prefer, and Who Should Enter the Address?

Updated

In short

Send a gift link if you lack clients' addresses or want each to choose: the client picks and types the address. Ship a box if you have the addresses: it skips the claim step and is opened the day it lands. No study we found shows which clients prefer.

We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too. The gift-link facts below come from each platform's own pages, read Oct 29, 2026.

Key facts (as of Oct 29, 2026)

  • No address needed: Goody says "No address required" and "Recipients enter their own shipping info" (Goody); Snappy says "Recipients add their own address and size" (Snappy).
  • Pay when claimed: on Goody, a credit card is "charged the full original gift cost after the gift is accepted. If a gift expires without being accepted, you are never charged" (Goody help). Snappy invoices "for all gifts claimed within the previous month" (Snappy help).
  • The claim comes first: Snappy's On Demand Plus swag is "printed as soon as your recipient claims" it, and shipping "typically takes two weeks, maximum" (Snappy).
  • Collecting addresses takes time: Sendoso's holiday checklist says to "add 5–7 days to your timeline for responses" when you gather addresses (Sendoso).

Where we fit: a box at the door, $35 delivered, no minimum. Which Do Clients Prefer?

No study we found asks clients to choose between a gift link and a gift box. The nearest evidence pulls both ways:

  • Choice ranks high. In business.com's 2022 poll of 1,547 professionals, "Gift cards are the most desired gift", and online gift cards are popular "as they allow recipients to choose their own gifts and cut down on waste" (business.com). A gift link offers the same kind of choice.
  • Surprise ranks high too. In a survey by Sendoso, a gifting platform, "Nearly 24% of respondents indicated that a surprise gift was most likely to build a connection, followed by something practical (23%) or a gift card that can be used anywhere (20%)" (MarTech360, Nov 2022). No option was a majority.
  • The claim rate isn't published. Snappy's home page offers to "track redemption rates", but none of the platforms we read publishes what share of links get claimed.

Our reading: a link is the better tool when you don't know the client's taste or address; a box is the better gesture when you do. More on the choice question: gift card or physical gift for clients?

Who Should Enter the Address?

You, if you already have it. If client addresses already sit on your invoices or in your customer records, a box costs you nothing new: type, paste or upload the rows as one address list, a CSV or a Google Sheet (the address spreadsheet template). The order page reads messy lists and flags any row we can't ship to.

The client, if you don't. Asking takes time. Sendoso tells its own customers to "add 5–7 days to your timeline for responses" when collecting addresses. Sugarwish, which sells the link model, puts it this way: "Asking 200 people for their home address means 200 emails, roughly 140 replies, and a follow-up campaign in week two for the stragglers." That's a seller's illustration, not a survey, but the delay is real.

A middle path. Ask once, warmly, and offer an office address or a P.O. box as alternatives: our guide to asking clients for their address has scripts. We accept P.O. boxes in the area we ship to; those boxes ship by USPS.

Breakage and address problems: If a box arrives broken, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we'll reship it free. If a box goes astray because of an address on your list, we'll reship it to the corrected address for what the reship costs us, with no markup, and tell you the amount before we send it.

The Claim Step: What It Means for Timing and Cost

Timing. A link lands the moment you send it, so it works at the last minute: Sugarwish says "There isn't an order-by date" because its gifts arrive by email. The gift itself waits for the claim, and then ships; for Snappy's On Demand Plus swag, shipping "typically takes two weeks, maximum." A box runs on the sender's clock instead. Ours: Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December. For Christmas, order by Tuesday, December 15.

Cost. Links can be cheaper when some people never claim: you pay for claimed gifts. Check the fine print on prepaid funds, though. At Snappy, refunds "can be requested up to 12 months from the original deposit date", the deposit can be used for 6 months more, and then "the remaining deposit is forfeited." With a box, you pay for every box, and every box ships to its person, with nothing left to claim.

Privacy and Surprise: Two Trade-Offs Worth Naming

Privacy. With a link, you don't collect home addresses at all; the recipient gives theirs to the platform. Sugarwish points out that pulling addresses from HR records "raises a privacy question you probably don't want to be the one answering." With a box, you hand a list of addresses to the seller. At Personalized Gifts Delivered, "We delete your recipients' addresses within 150 days after the boxes ship" (privacy policy), and the label's return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com.

Surprise. A link tells the client a gift is coming, then asks them to act. A box asks nothing of the client but opening it. Neither is wrong; they're different moments.

Which Fits Your Need?

  • You don't have addresses and won't ask: a gift link; the client types the address when claiming.
  • Each client should choose: Goody, Snappy or Sugarwish, where the recipient picks from what you allow.
  • Recipients abroad: Snappy's free plan lists "Send gifts to 176+ countries"; Goody's Pro plan lists "140+ countries".
  • It's past Tuesday, December 15 and it must land by Christmas: an e-gift goes out the same day.
  • You have the addresses and want a gift that ships straight to their door, with nothing to claim or type: a finished gift box. That is what Personalized Gifts Delivered ships, $35 per box, delivered, from 1 box to 50, with no minimum.

What to Know Before You Order

  • One set gift. Every client on an order gets the same box, mug design and card message, with each person's first name filled in; a different gift or message is its own order, and one box is a complete order.
  • Where we ship. The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO addresses or other countries. P.O. boxes are accepted, and the order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.

The Case for a Box at the Door

A link announces a gift and waits; a box is the gift itself, sent to the door. Nothing expires unclaimed, the client has nothing to type, and their first moment with it is opening it. What stays is a mug: in ASI's 2026 Ad Impressions Study, a promotional-products industry survey, 87% of end users said they would keep branded drinkware because it is useful (ASI).

Sending boxes yourself is real work: by our estimate about 9 hours of hands-on work for 25, plus a week or more waiting for supplies, at about $38 a box with USPS counter postage (about $34 with commercial postage), with $1,192.84 up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels (DIY vs ordering). Ordering from us, by contrast: upload a logo (or type your website), paste the list, check the preview, pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. Your logo is printed small on an 11 oz mug, with a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside it, under black tissue closed with a gold seal; your printed card, sealed in its envelope and greeting each client by first name, lies on the lid of a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid. Each box is packed by hand in foam.

You see the mug and every client's card before you pay. When the boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box. The price is $35 a box, delivered, whether you send 1 or 50.

Frequently asked questions

Is a gift link or a physical gift box better for clients?
Neither is better for every client: a gift link solves missing addresses and lets each client choose, while a physical box skips the claim step and is opened the day it arrives. No study we found compares which one clients prefer.
Can a client enter their own shipping address for a gift?
Yes: on gift-link platforms the client types their own address, as Goody ("Recipients enter their own shipping info") and Snappy ("Recipients add their own address and size") say, as of Oct 29, 2026. Sugarwish has recipients "enter their own address at redemption".
What happens if a client never claims a gift link?
What happens to an unclaimed gift link depends on the platform: on Goody, a gift paid by credit card that "expires without being accepted" is never charged. Snappy invoices monthly for "all gifts claimed within the previous month", and refunds of prepaid funds can be requested up to 12 months from the deposit (as of Oct 29, 2026).
Is there a gift company that doesn't make clients claim the gift with a link?
Yes: Personalized Gifts Delivered ships each $35 logo mug gift box, delivered, straight to the address on your list, with nothing for the client to claim or type and no minimum. Other gift box sellers also ship to addresses you give them; our gift box comparison lists them.
How long does a gift link take to arrive?
The link arrives at once, but the gift ships only after the client claims it. For Snappy's On Demand Plus swag, printed after the claim, Snappy says shipping "typically takes two weeks, maximum" (as of Oct 29, 2026).
