We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.
Key facts
- Referred customers are worth more: tracking about 10,000 customers of a German bank for almost three years, researchers found "The average value of a referred customer is at least 16% higher than that of a nonreferred customer with similar demographics and time of acquisition" (Schmitt, Skiera and Van den Bulte, 2011).
- No dollar safe harbor in RESPA: "There is no exception to RESPA Section 8 solely based on the value of the gift or promotion" (CFPB RESPA FAQs, updated Oct 7, 2020).
- Lawyers: ABA Model Rule 7.2(b)(5) speaks of "nominal gifts as an expression of appreciation" (ABA Model Rule 7.2).
- Home inspectors: InterNACHI members shall not "offer or provide any … financial compensation … to any real estate agent … for referrals" (InterNACHI Code of Ethics).

When Do You Send a Referral Thank-You: at the Introduction or When It Closes?
A realtor asked r/realtors exactly this, "At what point do you send a thank you gift for a referral?" (thread, 2022), and the replies split three ways:
- "Small token of appreciation gift upon introduction, another nicer one upon closing."
- "One token of appreciation at close of the referred transaction"
- "Reward the behavior you want to encourage aka thank them for referring regardless of what happens."
A financial advisor described the close-first habit on r/CFP: "We routinely send thank you gifts to the referring client after each referral closes to show our appreciation, and find this almost always leads to additional referrals from both the referrer and the newly referred" (thread, Jul 2026).
The two-step pattern covers both camps:

What fits (our suggestion, outside the trades with written texts below) |
Why |
| The introduction |
A note the same week |
It thanks the act, before anyone knows the outcome |
| The referral becomes a client |
A gift, with a card that names the person they sent |
The thank-you people keep |
| It doesn't become business |
The same note, with no hint of disappointment |
They still put their name behind yours |
| They refer again and again |
One gift at the year's end that names everyone they sent |
One card can thank them for all of it |
In the trades in the rules section below, read your trade's text before any gift goes out, at either step.
Are Referred Customers Really Worth More?
In a 2011 study, yes: by at least 16%. Schmitt, Skiera and Van den Bulte followed 5,181 customers a German bank won through its referral program and 4,633 it won other ways, over a 33-month window. Referred customers "(1) have a higher contribution margin, though this difference erodes over time; (2) have a higher retention rate, and this difference persists over time; and (3) are more valuable in both the short and the long run" (Journal of Marketing, 2011).
It is one bank, whose program paid every referrer "a reward of 25 euros in the form of a voucher", and "the size of the value differential varies across customer segments." Thanking every referrer is arithmetic: with no minimum, a $35 delivered gift box for each of 20 referrers a year comes to $700.
How Much Should a Referral Thank-You Gift Cost?
We found no survey of what businesses spend on referral gifts. What people in referral-driven trades say in public:
- The realtor who asked about timing floated "like a $25 gift card to Starbucks or target" as a thank-you. Another agent in the thread: "The family that referred the family I'm working with now is getting a $100 visa gift card the day they close" (r/realtors).
- A financial advisor was shopping in the "$100-$300" range for a client whose third referral had just closed (r/CFP).
- A poster on r/GeneralContractor was weighing "a $200 gift card or $$ off their next project for a referral that turns into a job." One reply: "$50 gift card for $5k job and under. $100 above" (r/GeneralContractor, 2025).
| Referral |
Range (our suggestion, outside the trades with written texts below) |
| An introduction |
A note; a treat up to about $20 |
| A referral that became a client |
$25 to $75, with a card that names who they sent |
| A client who sends many |
$75 to $300, once a year, personal to them |
Price buys less thanks than givers expect: recipients' appreciation isn't linked to what a gift cost (Flynn and Adams, 2009). Several texts below name money and gift cards specifically: read your trade's row before you choose a gift card.

What Should a Referral Thank-You Card Say?
Three things: the person they sent, what their trust meant, and a short wish. Leave out "keep them coming": it reads as a pitch, and it points at referrals "made or encouraged in the future", the words the ABA comment above uses. Two examples:
- "Thank you for sending [referral's name] our way, [Name]. You put your name behind ours, and we'll work to make you glad you did."
- "[Name], whatever comes of it, thank you for thinking of us. An introduction from you means a lot."
Forty more, sorted by relationship: thank you for the referral note templates. For other moments: thank-you messages for clients.
What Sending These Yourself Takes
Yes: you can buy and mail a referral thank-you yourself, and for one gift the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the cocoa, the chocolate, a gift box, tissue or a card (the itemized DIY cost, as of Oct 29, 2026). Batched, by our estimate, 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work plus a week or more waiting for supplies, and per box it comes out about even: about $38 with USPS counter postage and about $34 with commercial postage, with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels.
One small mistake costs a box: a mug packed without a foam collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again. Referrals arrive one at a time; with Personalized Gifts Delivered, one box is a complete order, and we print, pack and ship it to the referrer's address.
What to Know Before You Order
- Gift limits. Each box is $35, delivered. Some employers and industries cap the gifts their people may accept, or set rules on gifts tied to referrals; the limits, quoted from their sources: client gift limits by industry.
- The seal says "Happy Holidays". The black tissue inside closes with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker; your card carries the thank-you.
- The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
- One message per order. Every card in an order carries the same message, greeting each person by first name. A line that names the person a referrer sent is its own order, and one box is a complete order.
- Where we ship. The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, APO/FPO or international. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay.
Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits for a Referral Thank-You
A referral thank-you can go out the week the referral comes in, addressed to one person, with their name on it. One Personalized Gifts Delivered order does that:
- One box, any day. No minimum: a single referral is a complete order, at $35 delivered.
- Their own address. The box ships to the referrer's home or office, in a plain white carton; the return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com, and your name appears only on the card inside.
- A card about them. Your message, printed on a textured card, sealed in its envelope with a gold wax-seal sticker on the lid, greeting them by first name. You see the mug and the card before you pay.
- Something they keep. An 11 oz white ceramic mug with your logo printed small, with Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid. In ASI's 2026 study (a promotional-products industry survey), 87% of end-users said they would keep branded drinkware because it is useful (ASI).
- A record. When it ships, you get an email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box: a dated record of what you gave, and to whom.
Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. We ship from New York. Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.
That's a custom logo mug gift box, shipped to each client, no minimum, for the client or friend who sent someone your way. Referral just came in? Start your order: $35 per box, delivered.
