Promotional Products Statistics 2026: A Sourced Fact Sheet, With the Weak Numbers Flagged

Updated

In short

The promotional products statistics on this page come from the industry's own organizations, ASI and PPAI. ASI's 2026 study says 78% of US consumers would keep a promo item because it's useful and drinkware earns about 1,300 lifetime impressions; PPAI's 2021 survey found 48.7% kept promo items over five years. Below: every figure with its sponsor, sample and date.

We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address, so we have a stake in these numbers. This page names who ran each survey and flags the weak figures.

Key facts

  • $27.7 billion or $27.1 billion: 2025 promotional products sales, by ASI (North American distributors) or by PPAI (US distributors). Two industry groups, two methods.
  • 78% of US consumers would keep a promo item "because it's useful" (ASI 2026 Ad Impressions Study, a promotional-products industry survey).
  • Drinkware: about 1,300 lifetime impressions in 2026, 3,162 in 2023. Same organization, two editions (2026; 2023). Never mix them.
  • 48.7% of 5,674 US and Canadian end users kept promo products more than five years (PPAI, 2021).
  • No sample published: PPAI's 2025 recall figures (61% remember the brand) come with no sample size or method; ASI's 2026 articles give the whole study's sample, not the US or drinkware subsample.

The Fact Sheet: Every Figure, Who Paid for It, and How Much Weight It Bears

PPAI (the Promotional Products Association International) is the promotional products trade association. ASI (the Advertising Specialty Institute) sells data, media and events to the industry's suppliers and distributors. Both serve the industry whose results they report. Every row was read on the source's own page on Oct 29, 2026.

The weight column, defined (our grading): "Usable, labeled" means the source states its sample (for ASI 2026, the whole study's sample); quote it with who ran it. "Subsample not published" means the article doesn't say how many of those consumers answered that question. "Industry estimate" means a sales total whose method isn't published; quote it with its publisher. "Weak" means the article gives no sample or method. "Dated" means a newer edition exists. "Conflicting" means the same organization gives different figures. Every consumer figure here is self-reported.

How Long Do People Keep Promotional Products?

The best-documented answer is PPAI's 2021 survey of 5,674 end users: "almost half of respondents (48.7 percent) kept promotional products for longer than five years," and the top reason "is that the product is useful (75.4 percent)."

ASI's 2026 study puts usefulness first too: "78% of U.S. consumers would keep a promo item because it's useful", and for drinkware, a category that includes "ceramic coffee mugs or glassware", 87% said they would keep a branded piece "because of its usefulness."

All of these are self-reported, and "would keep" is a prediction, not an observation.

What Does a Promotional Product Cost Per Impression?

ASI's figures, by year:

  • 2026 average: "$0.006 (six-tenths of a cent)", per its April 21, 2026 release.
  • A $6 tote bag: "nearly 5,000 impressions over its lifetime, resulting in a CPI of about 1/10 of a cent."
  • A $10 insulated travel mug (2023): "1/3 of a cent", with 3,162 lifetime impressions for drinkware.

The figures match price divided by estimated lifetime impressions: $6 ÷ about 5,000 is about $0.0012 (our check). The impressions are estimates from consumers' survey answers; ASI's articles don't publish the formula. A cost per impression is only as good as its impression count, and ASI's drinkware count was 3,162 in its 2023 edition and about 1,300 in its 2026 edition, from different samples.

Do People Remember Who Gave It?

PPAI's October 2025 magazine feature reports: "More than half (54%) of consumers say they still have the last promo product they received, and nearly two-thirds (61%) say they clearly remember the brand that gave it to them." What helped: "57% said the logo or brand name was clear and visible." It also found "44% preferred subtle branding over big, bold logos", while "Nearly 60% of respondents said that a clear and visible logo or brand name helped them remember the product brand."

Together: subtle, but readable. The article gives no sample size, dates or method, so treat the percentages as directional. How small a logo can be and still be read: logo or no logo: how big and where.

Don't Cite These Without Fixing Them

  • "Drinkware gets 3,162 impressions" as a current figure. It's ASI's 2023 number, from data collected in late 2022. The 2026 figure is about 1,300.
  • "85% remember the advertiser" with no year. ASI published it in 2014, from in-person interviews in 27 cities. Its April 2026 release repeats it under "ASI research studies show" without naming the study. Cite it as 2014.
  • One "favorable impression" figure as if it were the only one. ASI's own 2026 documents give 78%, 79% and "nearly 80%". Quote one and name its document.
  • "72% bought from a brand because of a promo item" as a sales result. It's PPAI respondents' recollection, with no sample published.
  • Any of these as proof that promo "works". None is a controlled experiment. Gifts tested in experiments: 9 studies on tiny gifts with outsized results; the evidence on client gifts overall: do client gifts actually work?

What the Numbers Suggest for a Logo Mug (Our Reading)

Our reading, not a finding: in both organizations' surveys, usefulness is the top reason people keep a branded item; in PPAI's 2025 survey, 44% preferred subtle branding over big, bold logos, and nearly 60% said a clear, visible logo helped them remember the brand. What the surveys can't supply is the sender's name and the reason it was sent: a logo says which company an item came from, not who thought of the person or why. A card from a named person does that. The data on mugs specifically, both sides: is a branded mug a good client gift, or cheap swag? The same kind of fact sheet for client and employee gifts: corporate gifting statistics.

What to Know Before You Order

  • A finished gift, one per person. Each $35 box is the printed mug, the treats, the gift box, the card and shipping to its own address, with no minimum.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
  • Gift limits. Each box is $35, delivered. Some employers and industries cap the gifts their people may accept; the limits, quoted from their sources: client gift limits by industry.
  • Where we ship. The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits: The Kept Object, Plus Who Sent It

The figures above put usefulness first, and The figures above put usefulness first, and PPAI's own advice is a smaller logo that stays readable. Each Personalized Gifts Delivered box starts there and adds what a promo item leaves out:

  • The object people keep: an 11 oz white ceramic mug with your logo printed small (Small, up to 1½ in wide, is the default), on the front or on both sides at no extra cost.
  • A reason to open it now: a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside the mug, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.
  • Who sent it, and why: your message on a printed card that greets each person by first name, in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker.

Assembling 25 yourself takes, by our estimate, about 9 hours of hands-on work plus a week or more waiting for supplies; per box it comes out about even with our $35 (about $38 with USPS counter postage, about $34 with commercial postage), with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels, as of Oct 29, 2026 (DIY vs ordering, itemized). With us, you add your logo (or type your website), one message and your address list, check the preview of the mug and every card, and pay $35 per box, delivered. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address: a logo mug gift box with cocoa, truffles and a personal card.
