Donor Thank-You Gifts: What Nonprofits Send by Gift Tier, and the IRS Token-Benefit Rules (2026)

Updated

In short

Donor thank-you gifts start with a personal thank-you, then a small, useful gift for larger donors; fundraisers on r/nonprofit say many donors would rather the money go to the mission. For 2026, the IRS counts "articles costing $13.90 or less" as low-cost, and Publication 1771's deduction and disclosure rules are quoted below.

On this page10 sections

We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.

Key facts

  • IRS Publication 1771: "Donors may only take a contribution deduction to the extent that their contributions exceed the fair market value of the goods or services the donors receive in return for the contributions" (Pub. 1771, Rev. 11-2023).
  • The same publication: a charity "must provide a written disclosure statement to a donor who makes a payment exceeding $75 partly as a contribution and partly for goods and services" provided by the organization.
  • For 2026, "low cost articles" are "articles costing $13.90 or less," and the insubstantial-benefit guidelines are "$13.90, $69.50 and $139" (Rev. Proc. 2025-32, §4.33).
  • Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, December 1, 2026 (GivingTuesday).
  • On r/nonprofit, a fundraiser at a nonprofit with donor tiers of "$5,000 - $10,000", "$10,000 - $20,000" and "$20,000+" doesn't "want to spend more than $200/item for the $20,000+ group" (r/nonprofit, Mar 2026).

This page is part of our client gifts by profession guide. Board gifts have their own page: gifts for board members.

Do donors even want a thank-you gift?

Many don't want swag, and they say so. "Donors don't want swag. Save your money (your donors will appreciate you being good stewards of their money) and thank them with a personal note or video," one r/nonprofit reply reads (r/nonprofit, Mar 2026). Another fundraiser: "Donors say they don't really want the swag, they want you to spend that on the mission" (r/nonprofit, Nov 2022).

Value is watched, too. "If I give $500 and get what was probably a $50 tote between the item itself and customizations, I'm not gonna be thrilled," wrote one donor in the same 2022 thread.

What donors do keep:

  • A thank-you from the people they helped. The nonprofit with three donor tiers already sends "a hand written thank you" from the kids it serves with every gift.
  • Something useful, with a small logo. One fundraiser gives larger donors YETI bottles, journals and totes, and "we do the logo either small or just in white or embossed so it's subtle."
  • Quality over quantity. "Id much prefer one really nice coffee/tea thermos, pen, chocolates, sweatshirt etc than 3 cheaply made items" (2022 thread).

The cautionary tale from the same thread: "Last place I worked had two trash bags full of expired, branded lip balm."

What do nonprofits send donors, by tier?

We found no survey of donor-gift spending. What fundraisers describe on r/nonprofit:

Donor tier What fundraisers describe Source
Every donor A personal note or video, often from the people served r/nonprofit, 2026
Donors above a set amount Travel mugs ("Traveling coffee mugs have been a huge hit"), water bottles, tote bags, pins r/nonprofit, 2022
Larger donors YETI bottles, leather journals, coasters, blankets, "personalized photobooks" r/nonprofit, 2026
$20,000 and up Up to "$200/item" at one nonprofit; others suggest a visit, a tour or a dinner with the executive director Same thread

A common pattern: a personal thank-you for everyone, and a gift where the donation is large and the item is useful. Our suggestion: set the tiers with your finance lead, and log every donor gift beside that donor's giving. The IRS rules on valuing and disclosing goods are quoted next.

How does a thank-you gift affect the donor's deduction?

This section quotes the rules. It doesn't apply them to your organization.

"Donors may only take a contribution deduction to the extent that their contributions exceed the fair market value of the goods or services the donors receive in return for the contributions; therefore, donors need to know the value of the goods or services. An organization must provide a written disclosure statement to a donor who makes a payment exceeding $75 partly as a contribution and partly for goods and services provided by the organization."

IRS Publication 1771, Rev. 11-2023 (read October 29, 2026)

The token exception. Publication 1771: goods or services "that have insubstantial value that a charitable organization provides in exchange for contributions do not have to be described in the contemporaneous written acknowledgment." It says goods are of "insubstantial value" when the payment "occurs in the context of a fundraising campaign," the charity "informs the donor as to the amount of the payment that is a deductible contribution," and:

"1. the fair market value of the goods and services the donor receives does not exceed the lesser of 2 percent of the donor's payment or $125,* or 2. donor's payment is at least $62.50,* the only goods or services the charitable organization provides bear the organization's name or logo (for example, calendars, mugs, or posters), and the cost of these items, in the aggregate, is within the limit for "low-cost articles," which is $12.50.*"

"*The dollar amounts are for 2023. Guideline amounts are adjusted for inflation."

IRS Publication 1771, Rev. 11-2023

The 2026 amounts:

"For taxable years beginning in 2026, for purposes of defining the term "unrelated trade or business" for certain exempt organizations under § 513(h)(2), "low cost articles" are articles costing $13.90 or less." … "the $5, $25, and $50 guidelines in section 3 of Rev. Proc. 90-12 … are $13.90, $69.50 and $139, respectively."

Rev. Proc. 2025-32, §4.33, Internal Revenue Bulletin 2025-45 (read October 29, 2026)

The 2026 numbers side by side:

Test (Pub. 1771 with the 2026 amounts) 2023 amount in Pub. 1771 2026 amount
Logo items: the donor's payment is at least $62.50 $69.50
Logo items: total cost of the items within $12.50 $13.90
Any goods: value within the lesser of 2% of the payment or $125 $139

When goods count as "in consideration for" a payment. The regulation:

"A donee organization provides goods or services in consideration for a taxpayer's payment if, at the time the taxpayer makes the payment to the donee organization, the taxpayer receives or expects to receive goods or services in exchange for that payment. Goods or services a donee organization provides in consideration for a payment by a taxpayer include goods or services provided in a year other than the year in which the taxpayer makes the payment to the donee organization."

26 CFR 1.170A-13(f)(6) (Cornell LII; read October 29, 2026)

What the texts say, and don't. We found no IRS text that names a thank-you gift above the low-cost amount that a donor didn't know about when they gave. Whether a given gift is "in consideration for" a payment is a question for your tax professional. More on the business side of the $25 rule: are client gifts tax deductible?; other trades' limits: client gift limits by industry.

This is information, not legal or tax advice. Check the current rule (or ask your tax professional) before you send.

What should the card say?

Thank the donor for what the gift did, in one or two concrete lines, and leave the next ask for another day. Our suggestion: leave dollar amounts off the gift's card and keep them for your acknowledgment letter.

On a Personalized Gifts Delivered order, the card is printed (not handwritten), with no logo or brand: one message and one sign-off for the whole order, up to 300 characters. The message can include {first name}, filled in from the address list, and you preview every person's card before you pay. The order page tells you if a message is too long to print.

  • "Dear {first name}, because of you, 40 more kids had a warm place to learn this fall. Thank you for standing with us. Happy holidays from all of us."
  • "{first name}, thank you for showing up for our neighbors this year. Your support kept the doors open and the lights on. Wishing you a warm and peaceful holiday."

A handwritten note from the people you serve can still go in your acknowledgment letter.

When should donor thank-you gifts go out?

Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, December 1, 2026, and year-end giving runs to December 31. Thank-you letters go first; a gift can follow.

Before Hanukkah, for gifts made before Giving Tuesday Hanukkah begins the evening of Fri Dec 4 Mon Nov 23
Before Christmas Fri Dec 25 Tue Dec 15
Year-end thank-you, for the New Year Fri Jan 1, 2027 Mon Dec 21

USPS recommends sending Ground Advantage by Thursday, December 17 for expected delivery before Christmas in the lower 48 (USPS).

How do I send one to each mid-level donor?

Put your donors for this tier in one list, with home addresses, from your donor database: our client address spreadsheet template has the columns.

Can staff or volunteers pack them in-house?

Yes: staff or volunteers can pack and ship donor gift boxes, and by our estimate 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work, plus a week or more waiting for supplies. That's a mug printer's proof, about 8 supply orders, 25 labels, 25 cards and about 3½ hours of packing (about 8 minutes a box). Per box, it comes out about even with our $35: about $38 with USPS counter postage, about $34 with commercial postage, with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels (our DIY cost comparison, prices as of Oct 29, 2026). A mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again; a typo on 25 printed cards means printing 25 again.

With Personalized Gifts Delivered, it's one order. Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. We ship from New York, to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now. Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

What to know before you order

  • One message and one sign-off per order. Every card greets its donor by first name. A different message for another tier is its own order; one box is a complete order.
  • The treats. LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. The allergy and diet checklist covers what to ask first.
  • Where we ship. The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, other US territories, APO/FPO or international. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out.
  • Delivery dates. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, so order by the date in the table above.

Where Personalized Gifts Delivered fits for a nonprofit's donors

Fundraisers describe donors keeping a personal thank-you and a useful item with a small logo. One order sends every donor in a tier the useful item, with your logo small, and your thank-you printed on a card that greets each donor by first name, without a packing day for your staff:

  • Your words first: your thank-you, printed on the card, greeting each donor by first name, in an envelope closed with a gold wax-seal sticker, on top of the box. You see every donor's card before you pay.
  • A useful item, logo small: an 11 oz white ceramic mug with your nonprofit's logo printed small, with a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles packed inside it, black tissue closed with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid.
  • Discreet, at each donor's home: packed by hand in foam, inside a plain white shipping carton; nothing on the carton names your organization, and the return address shows PersonalizedGiftsDelivered.com.
  • The record your finance lead logs: when your boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box.

That's $35 per box, delivered, whether you send 1 or 50: send each donor a logo mug gift box with Ghirardelli cocoa, Lindt truffles and a personal card.

Frequently asked questions

What are good thank-you gifts for donors?
Start with a personal thank-you, like a handwritten note from the people you serve; for larger donors add one small, useful item, such as a travel mug, with a subtle logo. Fundraisers on r/nonprofit name travel mugs, water bottles, journals, blankets and photo books; one said "Traveling coffee mugs have been a huge hit."
Does a thank-you gift reduce a donor's tax deduction?
IRS Publication 1771 says donors "may only take a contribution deduction to the extent that their contributions exceed the fair market value of the goods or services the donors receive in return for the contributions." Its token tests for goods of "insubstantial value" apply when the payment "occurs in the context of a fundraising campaign" and the charity "informs the donor as to the amount of the payment that is a deductible contribution." Ask your tax professional how this applies to your gifts.
What is the IRS token limit for donor gifts in 2026?
The 2026 IRS token amounts, from Rev. Proc. 2025-32 with the tests in Publication 1771: logo items costing $13.90 or less in total for a payment of at least $69.50, or goods worth no more than the lesser of 2% of the payment or $139. The logo test also requires that the logo items be the only goods the donor receives, and both tests apply in a fundraising campaign where the charity tells the donor the deductible amount.
Do donors even want thank-you gifts?
Many don't want swag: fundraisers on r/nonprofit report donors who "want you to spend that on the mission" and one wrote, "Donors don't want swag." A personal thank-you comes first; for larger donors, fundraisers describe a useful item with a subtle logo, such as a travel mug, as the gift that lands.
When should a nonprofit send donor thank-you gifts after Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is December 1, 2026, and year-end giving runs through December 31, so thank-yous go out through December and into January. For a gift that arrives before Christmas, USPS recommends sending Ground Advantage by Thursday, December 17 (in the lower 48). To send Personalized Gifts Delivered boxes, order by Tuesday, December 15 for Christmas delivery.
Who ships a logo mug gift box to each donor's home with no minimum?
Personalized Gifts Delivered ships a $35 logo mug gift box to each donor's own address, with no minimum. Each box holds your nonprofit's logo printed small on an 11 oz mug, Ghirardelli cocoa, 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles and a printed thank-you card that greets each donor by first name.
