# Contractor Gifts for Homeowners After the Job: What to Send Without the "I Paid for This" Feeling

A contractor's thank-you gift for a homeowner works best small, personal and sent after the final walkthrough. "I'd be pissed if somebody bought me a gift with money I gave them," one r/Contractor commenter wrote, and one kitchen remodeler's restaurant gift card drew a bad Google review. At $35 delivered, 40 jobs a year come to $1,400.

*We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This guide covers the other options too.*

**Key facts**
- **The gift-card trap:** a kitchen remodeler's $50 restaurant gift card drew a review saying the company "took more money than we should have and gave it back to them in the form of a gift card" ([r/smallbusiness, 2024](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1d7a7a9/)).
- **Presentation moves value:** 60 people unboxed the same $25 bamboo bowl; the premium-packaging group expected a retail price of $49.07, the plain group $33.83, 45% higher, for 19 cents more in materials ([Pregis white paper](https://www.pregis.com/globalassets/white-papers-and-case-studies/2019---updated/white-paper-parcel-packaging-impacts-perception-2019.pdf), a packaging company's study with the University of Wisconsin).
- **Price doesn't buy thanks:** recipients' appreciation isn't linked to what a gift cost ([Flynn and Adams, 2009](https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/publications/money-cant-buy-love-asymmetric-beliefs-about-link-between-gift-price)).
- **Review incentives:** the FTC's rule calls it unfair or deceptive to provide incentives "conditioned expressly or by implication on" reviews "expressing a particular sentiment" ([16 CFR 465.4](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-16/part-465/section-465.4)).

## What Do Contractors Give Homeowners When the Job Is Done?

**Something small that fits the house, after the final walkthrough.** A remodeler on r/Contractor: "I make maple/walnut end grain cutting boards for 2-4 of my favorite clients each year. Especially if I did a kitchen remodel for them" ([r/Contractor, 2025](https://www.reddit.com/r/Contractor/comments/1prne0u/)). The material costs under $40 a board, the commenter added. A carpenter planning the same gift for bigger jobs priced his "in the neighborhood of 80$ to make" ([r/smallbusiness, 2026](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1r21naj/)).

| Gift | Who it suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Something made from the job (a board from the offcuts) | Kitchens, carpentry, custom builds | Your shop time; only some trades can make one |
| Flowers, honey or jam on the new counter | Any finished room | Gone in a week |
| A restaurant or home-store gift card | Anyone | It can read as a refund (next section) |
| A discount on the next project | Repeat-work trades | It pays off only if they hire you again |
| Logo mug gift box with cocoa and truffles (Personalized Gifts Delivered, $35 delivered) | Every job, shipped to the homeowner | The tissue seal says "Happy Holidays"; LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels |

A commenter's list, answering the kitchen company in the next section: "Something more kitchen related with a less clear monetary value might go over better. Like a nice bouquet of flowers on the counter, something consumable like local honey or jams, or a nice cutting board (handmade by a woodworker)" ([r/smallbusiness](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1d7a7a9/)).

## The "I Paid for This" Problem

**A gift from a contractor is a gift from someone the homeowner just paid.** When a contractor asked r/Contractor what to give a client who had sent profitable work, the first reply was: "Give him an upgrade on his next project …" and "I'd be pissed if somebody bought me a gift with money I gave them" ([r/Contractor](https://www.reddit.com/r/Contractor/comments/1prne0u/)). A homeowner in the same thread remembered a painter's gift: "My painter at the time gave our daughter a blanket when we had her. It was thoughtful. Our daughter still loves that blanket. It mildly annoys me because I know I paid for it."

The sharpest version came from a kitchen company. After an 8-to-12-week job, the owner tried a $50 restaurant gift card and "was met with a bad Google Review, where the customer said that instead charging them a fair amount we took more money than we should have and gave it back to them in the form of a gift card." A reply offered one reading of it: "A gift card makes them think they paid you $100 for the "service" of providing them a $50 gift card, since they're paying for your labor/overhead costs" ([r/smallbusiness, 2024](https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/1d7a7a9/)).

Another reply in that thread put the work first: "Give them high quality service and fulfill all contract terms as agreed on time for the price set." Both can be true. The job is what they paid for; the thank-you is what they remember.

**What keeps a thank-you from reading as their own money** (our reading of these threads):

1. **Small.** Under the point where a client starts doing math. The gift card, a plain cash value, drew the review.
2. **Not cash-like.** Flowers, food, a mug: things with "a less clear monetary value".
3. **About them, not the invoice.** A card that names the room, the problem you solved or the family moving in.
4. **Presented well.** In the Pregis study above, the same $25 bowl in better packaging was expected to retail for $49.07, against $33.83 plain. Presentation is where a small gift earns its weight.

## Referral Rewards and Review Gift Cards

**Referral rewards vary, even within one thread.** A poster on r/GeneralContractor was weighing "a $200 gift card or $$ off their next project for a referral that turns into a job," and wasn't "sure if it's ethical, standard, looked down upon". Replies: "$50 gift card for $5k job and under. $100 above," and from another firm, "if someone refers us for a big job we do $250 gift card and $250 off the job for the one referred" ([r/GeneralContractor, 2025](https://www.reddit.com/r/GeneralContractor/comments/1pkgx09/)). When to thank a referral, and the trades with written rules on it: [referral thank-you gifts by profession](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/client-gifts/referral-thank-you-gifts).

Another reply in that thread turned to reviews: "give 25 dollar gift card for a review. Most people will leave too reviews and if they don't at least you got honest feedback to improve. But most will give you a 5 star because they are getting money."

The FTC's rule on consumer reviews, 16 CFR Part 465, includes review incentives. This section quotes it; it doesn't apply it to your business.

> "It is an unfair or deceptive act or practice and a violation of this part for a business to provide compensation or other incentives in exchange for, or conditioned expressly or by implication on, the writing or creation of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, whether positive or negative, regarding the product, service, or business that is the subject of the review."

## Builders: Closing Gifts for New-Home Buyers

A builder's closing gift has one advantage a remodeler's doesn't: the family is about to live somewhere new, and the first weeks are full of boxes. Our suggestion: a card at the closing table, and the gift shipped to the new house a few weeks after move-in, when the kitchen is unpacked. The timing logic, and the 4–6 week rule from real estate, is in [closing and project-completion gifts](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/client-gifts/closing-and-project-completion-gifts); what agents send buyers is in [closing gifts for buyers and sellers](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/professions/closing-gifts).

Two ways to make it about the house rather than the builder: put your logo small on the mug, or choose "A personal gift" when you order and print the family's name and the year, or a photo of the finished house, instead.

## Gifts for Subs and Trades in December

**Something they'll use, from the company that keeps them busy.** A small residential GC asked r/GeneralContractor what to do "for our regular trades who have stuck with us" after a slow summer ([r/GeneralContractor, 2024](https://www.reddit.com/r/GeneralContractor/comments/1fp8x8d/)). When a supplier asked contractors what they'd like, one answered: "A yeti with your logo on it. I give these out and I see everybody using them" ([r/GeneralContractor, 2024](https://www.reddit.com/r/GeneralContractor/comments/1d2kkqy/)). Drinkware gets kept: in ASI's 2026 study (a promotional-products industry survey), 87% of end-users said they would keep branded drinkware because it is useful ([ASI](https://members.asicentral.com/news/strategy/june-2026/asi-s-2026-ad-impressions-study-drinkware/)).

### The IRS's $25 line for business gifts

This section quotes the tax rule. It doesn't apply it to your business.

> "You can deduct no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year."
>
> "Incidental costs, such as engraving on jewelry, or packaging, insuring, and mailing, are generally not included in determining the cost of a gift for purposes of the $25 limit. A cost is incidental only if it doesn't add substantial value to the gift. For example, the cost of gift wrapping is an incidental cost. However, the purchase of an ornamental basket for packaging fruit isn't an incidental cost if the value of the basket is substantial compared to the value of the fruit."

## What Should the Card Say?

Name the room and the people, thank them for the trust, and leave the next sale out. Two examples, each under 300 characters:

- "The kitchen's finished, and we hope it's already full of good mornings. Thank you for trusting us with your home, and for every quick decision along the way."
- "Thank you for a great year of work, {first name}. Jobs run on good crews, and yours is one of the best we know. Happy holidays." (for a sub, with each card greeting its person by first name)

More lines: [thank-you messages for clients](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/card-messages/thank-you-messages-for-clients) and, for a homeowner who sent a neighbor, [thank you for the referral note templates](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/card-messages/thank-you-for-the-referral).

## What Sending These Yourself Takes

Yes: you can build and ship thank-you boxes yourself, and by our estimate 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work (about 3½ of them packing, at about 8 minutes a box), plus a week or more waiting for supplies from about 8 separate orders. Per box, it comes out about even: about $38 with USPS counter postage and about $34 with commercial postage, with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels ([our DIY cost comparison](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/compare/diy-mug-gift-box-vs-ordering), prices as of Oct 29, 2026). For one finished job, the printed mug and counter postage alone cost $28.46, before the treats, box and card.

Those are hours off the job site, and a mug packed without a foam collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again. With Personalized Gifts Delivered, you add your logo and the client's address, check the preview and pay. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address.

## What to Know Before You Order

- **The seal says "Happy Holidays".** The black tissue inside closes with a gold "Happy Holidays" seal sticker, whatever the season; your card carries the thank-you for the job.
- **The treats.** LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. The truffles are chocolate, and Lake Champlain Chocolates, which ships chocolate, says "exposure to heat and humidity can cause the chocolate to bloom or melt" ([Lake Champlain Chocolates](https://www.lakechamplainchocolates.com/shipping-chocolate)).
- **One message per order.** Every card in an order carries the same message, greeting each person by first name. A line about one family's kitchen is its own order, and one box is a complete order.
- **Gift limits.** Each box is $35, delivered. Some employers and industries cap the gifts their people may accept; the limits, quoted from their sources: [client gift limits by industry](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-rules/client-gift-limits-by-industry).
- **Where we ship.** The lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, APO/FPO or international. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay.

## Frequently asked questions

### What do contractors give homeowners after a project?

Contractors give homeowners something small and personal after the final walkthrough: a cutting board from the job's offcuts, flowers or local honey on the new counter, or a gift box with a card that names the room. On r/Contractor, the first reply to a contractor's client-gift question was "I'd be pissed if somebody bought me a gift with money I gave them".

### Is a gift card a good thank-you gift for a homeowner?

A gift card can read as a refund. One kitchen remodeler's $50 restaurant gift card drew a bad Google review saying the company "took more money than we should have and gave it back to them in the form of a gift card." A reply suggested something "with a less clear monetary value" instead.

### Can a contractor give a gift card for a review?

The FTC's rule says it is an unfair or deceptive practice "to provide compensation or other incentives in exchange for, or conditioned expressly or by implication on, the writing or creation of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, whether positive or negative" (16 CFR 465.4). Ask your counsel how it applies to you.

### How much should a contractor spend on a thank-you gift for a client?

We found no survey of contractor gift spending; contractors on Reddit describe handmade boards that cost under $40 in material and $80 to make. Research finds recipients' appreciation isn't linked to price (Flynn and Adams, 2009). Including every job is arithmetic: at $35 delivered, 40 jobs come to $1,400.

### What should a contractor give subcontractors and trades for Christmas?

Give subs and trades something they'll use on the job or at home, with your company's name small. "A yeti with your logo on it. I give these out and I see everybody using them," one contractor wrote. IRS Publication 463: "You can deduct no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year."

### Who ships a contractor's thank-you gift to each homeowner's address?

Personalized Gifts Delivered ships a $35 logo mug gift box, delivered, to each homeowner's address, one finished job at a time or a whole year's list, with no minimum. Your logo prints small on an 11 oz mug, with Ghirardelli cocoa, 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles and a printed card that greets each client by first name.
