# What We Tried and Dropped: Two-Mug Sets, Stainless Steel Mugs and Laser Engraving, and Why One Ceramic Mug Won

For the Personalized Gifts Delivered gift box, one 11 oz white ceramic mug printed in full color beat a two-mug set, a stainless steel mug and laser engraving. We priced all three and dropped them: a pair needed a bigger carton and a divider, steel and a laser cost more, and an engraved logo comes out in one tone.

*We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This is our record of what we tried before it shipped, with the numbers we found and where each one comes from.*

**Key facts**
- **One mug, not two:** the broken mug we've seen came from a pair, packed side by side in one snug mailer, touching each other. Its handle snapped off at both joints.
- **A pair needs a bigger box:** the two-mug kit we planned would have shipped in a 12 × 12 × 8 in carton, about 58% more space than the 9 × 9 × 9 in carton one mug ships in.
- **A laser setup, by our list: about $900 to $960,** with Creality's Falcon2 22W and rotary at $599 on its own store on October 31, 2026, down from $919 ([Creality](https://www.crealityfalcon.com/products/falcon2-22w-laser-engraver-and-cutter-with-rotary-kit)).
- **3½ to 7½ minutes a mug** on that laser, by our estimate: loading, engraving a 1.5 in logo and a wipe.
- **What ships instead:** one 11 oz white ceramic mug with your logo printed small, in full color, by sublimation, at $35 per box, delivered.

## Three Things We Dropped, Side by Side

| What we tried | What it offered | Why we dropped it | What ships instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two mugs per box | A pair looks like more | A 12 × 12 × 8 in carton, a divider so the mugs never touch, and no ready-made two-mug gift box with a die-cut insert in our search | One mug, full of cocoa and truffles, in its own foam collar |
| A stainless steel mug | It can't break in the mail | Laser-ready steel is powder-coated in a color and can't take a sublimation print; steel blanks cost more | An 11 oz white ceramic mug, held in foam |
| Laser engraving | A permanent, one-tone mark on steel | About $900 to $960 to set up by our list, 3½ to 7½ minutes a mug by our estimate, and a white ceramic mug needs marking paper first | Sublimation: your logo in its own colors, on the heat press we already owned |

## Why One Mug and Not a Two-Mug Set?

Our first round of research, on Saturday, October 24, priced boxes for two mugs. It changed the same day. The broken mug we've seen came from a pair: two mugs side by side in one snug black mailer, each in a plastic bag with one layer of bubble wrap, touching each other and with about ¼ in between them and the walls. One handle snapped clean off at both joints.

To ship a pair safely, our notes from that day list three needs: about 2 in of cushion from every wall, a divider so the mugs never touch, and handles that carry no load. The two-mug kit we planned came close: a four-cell mug box (two cells for mugs, two for the cocoa, the treats and the card) inside a 12 × 12 × 8 in carton, with about 1½ in of fill around it instead of 2 in, so it still needed a drop test. Packed, it weighed close to 4 lb by our estimate and took about 58% more space than today's 9 × 9 × 9 in carton.

The box itself was the other problem. In our October 24 search, no US supplier we could reach had a ready-made two-mug gift box with a die-cut insert, and AliExpress listed no two-mug packaging at all. Our call that afternoon: one mug per box, because a pair was there for perceived value. A second mug adds looks, not use.

Two-mug sets do exist, from sellers with order minimums. Givenly's Hot Cocoa Bar Kit with 2 Mugs pairs "two 16 oz. enamel camping mugs imprinted with your logo" with cocoa and toppings, at $82.59 a kit at its 24-kit minimum, plus a one-time $50 setup fee, as of October 31, 2026 ([Givenly](https://givenly.com/custom-kitting/quick-kits/hot-cocoa-bar-kit-with-2-mugs)).

**What we chose instead:** one mug that arrives full. A 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles ride inside it, so it's ready to use the day it lands, and it stands alone in its own foam collar with nothing to knock against. How that pack works: [how to ship a mug without breaking it](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/how-its-made/how-to-ship-a-mug-without-breaking).

## Why a Ceramic Mug and Not Stainless Steel?

Steel was on the table for one reason: it can't break. On October 24 we put metal mugs in scope and read the makers' own pages. They fall into three kinds, and each one changes something:

| Metal mug (maker's page) | How it takes a logo | The maker's care line | Price for one, Oct 31, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| [MakerFlo 12oz Camper Mug](https://makerflo.com/products/bulk-coffee-mugs), powder-coated 304 stainless, double wall | "Laser engraving (most popular)" | "Handwash Only" | $9.95 |
| [Coastal White Stainless Steel Sublimation Camp Mug, 11 oz](https://www.coastalbusiness.com/11-oz-white-matte-sublimation-stainless-steel-camp-mug.html) | Sublimation: 330°F for 200 seconds in an 11/15 oz mug press element | "Hand wash only" | No single-mug price (sold in packs) |
| [Condé LumaSteel Sublimation Blank Enamel Camp Mug, 12 oz](https://www.conde.com/proddetail.asp?prod=CM11) | Sublimation | "Hand wash only" | $3.79 |

What we learned from them:
- **The colored steel mugs are laser mugs.** Sublimation needs a polyester coating ("A mug without polyester coating is not available," in [Mimaki's](https://singapore.mimaki.com/application/stationery/entry-306656.html) mug instructions), and our research found a colored powder coat can't be sublimated. So a black or navy steel mug meant buying a new machine, and the one we priced was a laser (the next section).
- **The white steel mugs take the same print as ceramic,** with steel's one advantage and its maker's care rule.
- **Enamel trades a broken handle for a chipped coat.** Condé's own page: "Enamel paint loss is a normal phenomenon due to the retro design."
- **Care was a con we noted, not what decided it.** We don't publish a care rating for our own mug yet (see "What to know before you order").

What decided it was color and price: the metal and laser options cost more per box. For scale, at one seller, Condé, the white 11 oz ceramic sublimation mug was $2.95 and the white enamel camp mug $3.79 ([Condé DyeTrans](https://www.conde.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MUG11), Oct 31, 2026); one laser-ready camper mug at MakerFlo was $9.95.

**What we chose instead:** an 11 oz white ceramic mug, so your client sees your logo in your own colors. Steel's real strength, that it can't break, we answered with packing: foam under the mug, around it with a slot for the handle, and on its rim, the two weak spots.

## Why Sublimation and Not Laser Engraving?

A laser was the way to put a logo on steel, so we priced one. Here is the setup our research put together, at retail:

| Laser setup item | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Creality Falcon2 22W laser with rotary (the mug spinner) | $599, down from $919 | [Creality](https://www.crealityfalcon.com/products/falcon2-22w-laser-engraver-and-cutter-with-rotary-kit), Oct 31, 2026 |
| Risers, pack of 4 | $9.99 | [Creality](https://www.crealityfalcon.com/products/creality-falcon2-extra-raisers-4-packs), Oct 31, 2026 |
| Protection enclosure | $59 | [Creality](https://www.crealityfalcon.com/products/laser-engraver-protection-enclosure-pro), Oct 31, 2026 |
| Safety goggles, an outdoor vent fan, a fire extinguisher, cleaning supplies, 12 to 15 test mugs | About $230 to $290 | Our estimate |
| **Total** | **About $900 to $960** | |

**Time, by our estimate:** 1 to 2 minutes to load and line up each mug, 2 to 5 minutes to engrave a 1.5 in logo, and 30 seconds to wipe it: 3½ to 7½ minutes a mug, or about 1½ to 3 hours of hands-on laser time for 25 mugs. Creality's own guide to engraving a Stanley cup gives "Simple Text: 10–20 minutes per cup", a longer figure than ours ([Creality](https://www.crealityfalcon.com/blogs/laser-academy/stanley-cup-engraving)). For comparison, Mimaki's sublimation instructions list a mug at 190 °C for 3 minutes.

**A laser doesn't simply mark a white ceramic mug.** xTool's guide to engraving a ceramic mug with a diode laser starts with laser marking paper ("First soak the marking paper in water for 5mins"), and it says you can skip that step only "if you use a colored mug" ([xTool](https://www.xtool.com/blogs/how-to/laser-engrave-mug)). Engraving bare glaze has its own catch: "since the glazing gets removed, the ceramic object no longer remains fully waterproof" ([xTool](https://www.xtool.com/blogs/how-to/laser-engrave-ceramic)). In practice, a laser meant a steel mug.

**And on steel, the logo is one tone.** "The laser burns away the outer colored coating, revealing the shiny stainless steel underneath" ([Creality](https://www.crealityfalcon.com/blogs/laser-academy/stanley-cup-engraving)). Your brand's colors become silver.

Engraving has real strengths: Creality calls it "a permanent modification that cannot be easily removed," and a silver logo on dark steel is quiet. Our research's advice was to order engraved samples before spending about $900 in the busiest season of the year. We kept the heat press we already owned and didn't buy the laser.

**What we chose instead:** sublimation. Heat bonds the ink into the mug's coating, with no screen or plate made for your logo, which is why one box is a complete order. Your client sees your logo small, in its own colors, within 2 × 1.5 in; white in your logo shows the mug's own white. ## What Else Did We Try and Drop?

- **Three tiers of box.** On the evening of October 24 we sketched a classic, a premium and a deluxe box. Within the hour it became one box at $35: do one box well first, and make it feel premium with the packing and the treats, not with more items ([the unboxing we designed](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/how-its-made/unboxing)).
- **Supermarket cocoa and chocolate kisses.** The first sketch used both. We swapped them for Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, so the treats make the box feel premium ([what's in the box](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/whats-in-the-box)).
- **A laser-engraved logo coaster.** It would have kept the logo off the mug, but it needed the laser and a flat 4 in slot in the foam, so it didn't make the one-box plan. Your logo goes on the mug, small.

The gift box has its own story of what we tried and turned down: [why we chose our gift box](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/how-its-made/magnetic-gift-box), [what we learned sourcing gift boxes](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/how-its-made/sourcing-gift-boxes) and [fixed vs collapsible gift boxes](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/how-its-made/fixed-vs-collapsible-boxes-freight). More from [how we build it](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/how-its-made).

## Can You Build a Mug Gift Box Yourself?

Yes: every part of ours can be bought and packed by hand, and by our estimate 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work, plus a week or more waiting for supplies to arrive. Per box, it comes out about even: about $38 with USPS counter postage or about $34 with commercial postage, against our $35, with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels, with leftovers ([DIY mug gift box vs ordering one](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/compare/diy-mug-gift-box-vs-ordering), prices as of Oct 29, 2026). Engraving them yourself would add a laser setup like the one above. And one small slip costs a second round: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again.

## What to know before you order

- **One mug, one method.** Ours is an 11 oz white ceramic mug printed by sublimation; we don't engrave, sell steel mugs or ship two-mug sets. Every mug in an order carries the same logo.
- **Care.** We don't publish a care rating for our mug yet, so we make no claims about how its print holds up to machine washing or heating. Our suggestion is to wash it by hand.
- **The treats:** LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels.
- **Where we ship:** from Texas to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas addresses for now. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does the Personalized Gifts Delivered box hold one mug and not two?

One mug: a pair added looks, not use, and needed a 12 × 12 × 8 in carton, about 58% more space than the 9 × 9 × 9 in carton one mug ships in, plus a divider so the mugs never touch. The broken mug we've seen came from a pair packed touching each other.

### Is a ceramic or stainless steel mug a better gift?

It depends on the logo you want: a powder-coated stainless mug takes a one-tone laser engraving, and a white ceramic mug takes a full-color sublimation print. Personalized Gifts Delivered chose white ceramic for full color and price, and answers steel's one big advantage, that it can't break, with a foam pack.

### Why didn't you use laser engraving?

A laser setup came to about $900 to $960 by our list, with Creality's Falcon2 22W and rotary at $599 on October 31, 2026, and we estimated 3½ to 7½ minutes a mug. On a white ceramic mug, xTool's diode-laser guide starts with laser marking paper, so in practice a laser meant a steel mug and a one-tone logo.

### Who ships a single logo mug gift box to each client with no minimum?

Personalized Gifts Delivered ships one 11 oz white ceramic mug with your logo printed small in full color, with Ghirardelli cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside, in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid, to each person's own address, at $35 per box delivered, from 1 box.

### What else did you try and drop?

Three tiers of box became one box at $35, supermarket cocoa and chocolate kisses became Ghirardelli cocoa and Lindt LINDOR truffles, and a laser-engraved logo coaster didn't make the cut. The premium feel comes from the packing and the treats, not from more items.
