# What We Learned Sourcing Gift Boxes: Amazon vs Alibaba vs a Stock Supplier

Magnetic gift boxes in bulk come from Amazon, Alibaba makers or stock-box makers. For our 100, a stock-box maker won: a size in stock for an 11 oz mug, a one-box minimum, and duties-paid express shipping. Alibaba makers built mug-depth boxes only to order, and Amazon capped the two boxes we shortlisted at 30 per order when we checked.

*We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. This is our record of finding its box, October 24 to 30, 2026; supplier chats stay private, so we describe them in aggregate.*

**Key facts**
- **12 makers and sellers in two days:** on October 24 and 25, 2026, we contacted 8 packaging makers on Alibaba, 3 Amazon sellers and one stock-box maker, Geoto.
- **No stock mug-depth box we could find on Alibaba:** the ready-made sizes we found listed were too shallow for a standing 11 oz mug; every maker we found built a deeper box to order.
- **Amazon's cap:** the two deep black boxes we shortlisted on Amazon were each limited to 30 per order on October 25, 2026. One of them, Hallmark's 7 in box, is sold by Amazon.com itself, so there's no seller to ask for a bulk price.
- **What we ordered:** 100 of [Geoto's A6 Cube Black](https://www.geotobox.com/product-detail/a6-cube-black-magnetic-gift-box/), a foldable matte-black cube with a magnetic flap, 175 mm (6⅞ in) outside and 160 × 165 × 170 mm inside, on October 30, 2026, by express with duties paid.
- **Its terms:** a minimum of 1 piece for stock boxes and 500 for a custom size; US orders ship only delivered duty paid ([Geoto FAQ](https://www.geotobox.com/faqs)).

## What Box Were We Trying to Buy?

About 100 plain matte-black gift boxes, unprinted, in hand by mid-November. The size came from two things:
- **The mug.** White 11 oz mugs run about 80 to 83 mm across, 94 to 98 mm tall and up to about 121 mm wide with the handle, across the 15 makers' listings we compared. Ours stands on a 2 in foam pad inside a 1 in collar, with a 1 in pad on the rim, so the box needs height as well as floor space.
- **The carton.** The gift box rides in a plain 9 × 9 × 9 in carton with about 1 in of crinkle on every side, so it can't be much more than 7 in across.

That's roughly a 6 to 7 in cube. We found a magnetic one in stock at just two sellers: one on Amazon, and Geoto.

## What Happened When We Asked Alibaba Makers?

On Saturday, October 24, we sent three direct inquiries and posted one request for quotation (RFQ) for a blank box with a black foam insert cut for one 11 oz mug. Five more makers answered the RFQ. By the evening of Sunday, October 25:

- **The first replies looked automatic.** The earliest came 13 minutes after the RFQ went up, close to 4 a.m. in China. They asked us to confirm dimensions the request already gave and attached catalog quote cards, some for other products, such as a kraft shipping box and a candy box.
- **The direct inquiries went unanswered.** None of the three makers we wrote to directly replied in the two days we tracked.
- **No stock box was deep enough.** The ready-made sizes on the mug-box listings we read were 5 to 9 cm (2 to 3½ in) deep. Every maker we read built a box deep enough for a standing mug to order.
- **Custom sizes came with minimums.** Four of the five makers whose custom minimum we saw asked for 100 to 500 pieces; the fifth listed 2.
- **Weeks of lead time, with freight left open.** Listed production ran 7 to 31 days, shipping was "to be negotiated" on every listing, and the ready-to-ship items we looked at showed delivery dates from January 3 to February 1.
- **One real price in two days:** a single figure for the box we described, with no size, quantity, freight or lead time attached. The other makers who replied said they would check details and come back.

Alibaba suits made-to-order boxes at volume, and [Trade Assurance](https://tradeassurance.alibaba.com/) offers buyers who pay through Alibaba.com a refund when an order "arrives with defects, incorrect items, damages, or other product-related issues". It couldn't give us our size, in our quantity, by mid-November.

## What Did Amazon Have?

Speed, and very few deep boxes. On October 24 and 25, 2026, only one magnetic box we found was deep enough for a standing mug and small enough for our carton; the others were 1.5 to 4 in deep, or 8 in wide and up. A few black boxes with lift-off lids were deep enough too. The two we shortlisted:
- **[Hallmark's 7 in black gift box](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QQHC9XP),** tied with a ribbon, shipped and sold by Amazon.com. There's no seller to message for a bulk price, and its 12-pack cost the same per box as a single.
- **One third-party seller's 7 in collapsible magnetic cube.**

On October 24, their delivery dates were 1 to 3 days out; on October 25, both were limited to 30 per order, and we asked three third-party sellers for a 100-box price and a foam insert. Amazon said to expect replies within 48 hours, and none had answered by that evening. Four searches turned up no ready-made black mug box with a foam insert.

The Hallmark box became our base plan that day: by its listed size, a mug in a foam collar would stand in it. The cap meant 100 boxes would take at least four orders.

**US packaging distributors** had no magnetic box in our size when we checked on October 24. [Uline's matte magnetic gift boxes](https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-24511BL/Retail-Boxes/Magnetic-Gift-Boxes-8-x-8-x-3-1-8-Black), for example, are 6 × 6 × 2¾, 8 × 8 × 3⅛ or 10 × 10 × 4½ in inside: too shallow for a standing mug, or too big for the carton. Five other US distributors we checked sold the same line in the same sizes; the rest had nothing that fit either.

The duty terms, in the International Chamber of Commerce's words: under DDP, "the seller is responsible for import clearance in the destination country"; under EXW, "The buyer must handle all export formalities and arrange transportation for the entire transportation journey" ([ICC Academy](https://academy.iccwbo.org/incoterms/article/incoterms-2020-exw-or-ddp/)).

## Why Did a Stock-Box Maker Win?

Geoto, a box maker based in China that sells ready-made sizes from its web shop, had our size, in stock, in our quantity. We sent it four questions through its contact form on Sunday evening, October 25, had answers the next business day, chose its A6 Cube on Monday, October 26, and ordered 100 on Friday, October 30.

- **A size in stock that fits.** 160 × 165 × 170 mm inside holds the mug in its 1 in collar on a 2 in pad, with a 1 in pad on the rim; 6⅞ in outside leaves about 1 in of crinkle on every side in a 9 × 9 × 9 in carton.
- **A one-box minimum.** "Stock products, the MOQ is 1piece," its FAQ says. We could order exactly the 100 we needed, from stock.
- **No production wait.** In-stock orders are "processed and shipped within 2 business days after payment confirmation", then US express takes 2 to 5 business days.
- **Duties paid, samples sold.** US orders ship only DDP, "with tax already paid", and "You can buy plain box samples on our website directly."
- **Nothing to design or approve.** The box is the one on the product page. Our custom request, with its fitted insert, would have needed a drawing to approve and, ideally, a sample before production.
- **It ships flat.** The A6 Cube is foldable, so it travels flat and we fold each one; once we chose to cut our own foam, flat beat a fixed box with a fitted insert. ## What Does the Stock Route Give Up?

- **The finish is the stock finish:** anti-scratch matte lamination on 2.3 mm board. A custom size, color or design starts at 500 pieces.
- **The size is the size.** The cube is deeper than an 11 oz mug needs, so a 2 in foam pad lifts the mug. We cut it, the collar (with a handle slot) and the top pad by hand from black polyurethane foam sheets bought on Amazon.
- **The assembly is ours.** Each box arrives flat and is folded before it's packed.

## Can You Source and Pack Gift Boxes Yourself?

Yes: 25 deep black boxes fit in one Amazon order, under the 30-per-order cap we saw; for 100, a stock-box maker with duties-paid express fit our size and our date. Our search took six days and 12 makers and sellers, for the box alone.

By our estimate, the box is one of about 8 separate supply orders a finished gift needs: gift boxes, tissue, seal stickers, cards and envelopes, foam, shipping cartons, crinkle, cocoa and truffles. For 25 logo mug gift boxes, we estimate about 9 hours of hands-on work, plus a week or more waiting for supplies to arrive. The packing is where one small mistake costs most: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again.

## What to know before you order

- **The gift box is blank, by design:** no logo on the box, the tissue or the card. Your logo prints on the mug only, small but clear.
