# When People Search vs When You Must Order: The Gifting-Timing Gap (Original Google Trends Study)

People search for named appreciation days in the final week: in US Google Trends data for 2021–2026, 65% to 86% of the 8-week run-up's searches for six such days, including Employee Appreciation Day and Boss's Day, came in that week. That is after a shipped, custom gift should have been ordered.

*We sell a $35 logo mug gift box, printed, packed and shipped to each person's address. It ships within 2 business days of a complete order and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships (carrier estimates, not guarantees), so we have a stake in early ordering. The data is Google's; the method is below, so anyone can check it.*

**Key facts** (Google Trends, US, weekly, October 24, 2021 to October 24, 2026; pulled October 27, 2026):

- **Employee Appreciation Day:** a median 67% of the 8-week run-up's searches came in the final week, and the peak fell in that week in all 5 years.
- **National Coffee Day is the most last-minute:** a median 86% in the final week.
- **Mother's Day gifts:** 49% in the final week and 74% in the final two weeks.
- **Christmas client gifts are the opposite:** "gifts for clients" peaked two to three weeks before Christmas in every year, with only 7% of the run-up in the final week.
- **A shipped gift needs about 7 business days:** up to 2 to ship and up to 5 in transit, by our own delivery estimate.

## The Gap in One Table

"Final week" is the Sunday-to-Saturday week that holds the day before the occasion, when a gift should arrive. "Run-up" is that week and the 7 weeks before it. Each figure is the median across the years shown.

| Occasion | Term searched (US) | Years | Run-up searches in the final week | In the final 2 weeks (range) | 2+ weeks out | Peak week (years) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| National Coffee Day | "national coffee day" | 5 | 86% | 93% (73–94%) | 7% | Final week (4 of 5) |
| Boss's Day | "bosses day" | 5 | 69% | 81% (68–83%) | 19% | Final week (4 of 5) |
| Employee Appreciation Day | "employee appreciation day" | 5 | 67% | 79% (78–83%) | 21% | Final week (5 of 5) |
| Nurses Week | "nurses week" | 5 | 67% | 81% (74–85%) | 19% | Final week (4 of 5) |
| National Hot Chocolate Day | "national hot chocolate day" | 5 | 65% | 72% (64–81%) | 28% | Final week (5 of 5) |
| Administrative Professionals Day | "administrative professionals day" | 5 | 65% | 80% (78–81%) | 20% | Final week (5 of 5) |
| Grandparents Day | "grandparents day" | 5 | 52% | 71% (69–74%) | 29% | Week of the day (5 of 5) |
| Teacher Appreciation Week | "teacher appreciation week" | 5 | 50% | 75% (65–92%) | 25% | Final week (5 of 5) |
| Mother's Day | "mothers day gifts" | 5 | 49% | 74% (73–80%) | 26% | Final week (5 of 5) |
| Kwanzaa | "kwanzaa" | 5 | 46% | 62% (51–66%) | 38% | Final week (4 of 5) |
| Father's Day | "fathers day gifts" | 5 | 45% | 66% (57–67%) | 34% | Final week (5 of 5) |
| Thanksgiving | "thanksgiving gifts" | 4 | 39% | 63% (59–65%) | 37% | Final week (4 of 4) |
| Hanukkah | "hanukkah gifts" | 4 | 33% | 55% (49–66%) | 45% | Week of the day (2 of 4) |
| Customer Service Week | "customer service week" | 5 | 27% | 45% (38–49%) | 55% | Final week (5 of 5) |
| Valentine's Day | "valentines day gifts" | 5 | 24% | 51% (39–61%) | 49% | Week before (3 of 5) |
| New Year | "new year gifts" | 5 | 19% | 34% (29–39%) | 66% | Final week (4 of 5) |
| Christmas, employee gifts | "christmas gifts for employees" | 5 | 7% | 27% (14–30%) | 73% | 2 weeks before (3 of 5) |
| Christmas, client gifts | "gifts for clients" | 5 | 7% | 22% (16–25%) | 78% | 3 weeks before (3 of 5) |

"Week of the day" means the peak came in the week that starts on the day itself (Grandparents Day is a Sunday). "Years" counts the occurrences with a full 8-week run-up inside the data.

## Named Appreciation Days: Most Searches Come Too Late to Ship

For nine named days (Employee Appreciation Day, Administrative Professionals Day, Nurses Week, Boss's Day, National Hot Chocolate Day, National Coffee Day, Grandparents Day, Teacher Appreciation Week and Mother's Day), between 7% and 29% of the run-up's searches came two or more weeks before the day. Half or more came in the final week for eight of them, and Mother's Day missed by one point.

The pattern held year after year. The final-week share for each:

| Occasion | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Employee Appreciation Day | 71% | 72% | 67% | 65% | 64% |
| Administrative Professionals Day | 64% | 64% | 65% | 65% | 66% |
| Nurses Week | 65% | 58% | 67% | 67% | 68% |
| Boss's Day | 51% | 55% | 69% | 70% | 69% |
| National Hot Chocolate Day | 70% | 72% | 65% | 64% | 58% |
| National Coffee Day | 90% | 92% | 64% | 85% | 86% |
| Grandparents Day | 56% | 57% | 50% | 52% | 52% |
| Teacher Appreciation Week | 50% | 81% | 86% | 46% | 44% |
| Mother's Day | 55% | 49% | 49% | 53% | 48% |

Whoever searches in that final week, a printed, packed and shipped gift is already late by then.

## Holidays Are Different: Christmas Planners Search Early

The year-end holidays run the other way. "gifts for clients" peaked three weeks before Christmas in three of five years and two weeks before in the other two, with a median 78% of the run-up's interest two or more weeks out. "christmas gifts for employees" looked the same: 73% two or more weeks out.

New Year gifts sit in between: "new year gifts" peaked in the final week in four of five years, but 66% of the run-up came earlier, which fits buyers who start looking in December. Valentine's Day and Hanukkah split their searches about evenly between the last two weeks and the six before; Thanksgiving leans late, with 63% in the last two weeks.

Two things follow (our reading, not a finding):

- **For Christmas, the search lines up with the deadline.** Most of the search interest in client gifts comes in time to order; the risk is that every gift lands in the same week.
- **For named days, the search is the reminder, and it comes late.** A calendar does that job better than a search. Our [2027 gifting calendar](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-calendar) lists every date.

## What the Gap Means If You're Sending a Gift

How we ship, in full:

Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December.

Seven business days is 9 to 11 calendar days, depending on where the weekend falls. So a gift for Employee Appreciation Day has to be ordered in the week before the final week, when, in this data, about a fifth of searches have happened.

- **You're searching in the final week:** send a card or an e-card now and a gift that arrives a few days late, worded as a thank-you rather than an apology (our suggestion).
- **You're planning ahead:** put next year's dates in your own calendar with a reminder two to three weeks before each one (our suggestion). The dates: [2027 gifting calendar](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-calendar).
- **Christmas:** our own order-by date for Christmas is Tuesday, December 15; USPS's are on [2026 holiday order-by dates](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-calendar/holiday-order-by-dates-2026).

How often to gift, and which dates suit clients: [when (and how often) to send client gifts](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-calendar/when-to-send-client-gifts).

## How We Measured It

1. **Data:** Google Trends interest over time, United States, "today 5-y" (weekly, October 24, 2021 to October 24, 2026), pulled October 27, 2026. One term per request, so each series is scaled to its own peak. The last, partial week was dropped.
2. **Terms:** the day's own name where people search the day ("employee appreciation day", "nurses week"), and a gift query where the day's name is mostly searched for other reasons ("mothers day gifts", "hanukkah gifts", "gifts for clients").
3. **Dates:** each day's rule for each year (first Friday in March; Wednesday of the last full week of April; May 6 for Nurses Week; October 16; January 31; September 29; the first Sunday after Labor Day; the second Sunday in May; the first full week of May; December 26; the third Sunday in June; February 14; the fourth Thursday in November; the first full week of October; December 25; January 1), and Hebcal for the first night of Hanukkah. Sources for each rule: [2027 gifting calendar](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-calendar).
4. **Windows:** the final week is the Sunday-to-Saturday week holding the day before the occasion; the run-up is that week plus the 7 before it. An occurrence counts only if its whole run-up is inside the data.
5. **Shares:** each week's index divided by the sum of the run-up's 8 weekly values; the median across occurrences is reported, with the range for the final two weeks.

## What This Data Can't Tell You

- **It is not search volume.** Google says each data point "is divided by the total searches of the geography and time range it represents to compare relative popularity", and the results are "scaled on a range of 0 to 100" ([Google Trends Help](https://support.google.com/trends/answer/4365533?hl=en)). Shares of the index show timing, not counts.
- **It is a sample.** "Google Trends provides access to a largely unfiltered sample of actual search requests made to Google" (same page). So numbers can shift a little between pulls, and small terms are rounded to whole numbers, which is noisier.
- **Searching is not buying.** Someone looking up "bosses day" may only want the date. The study shows when interest arrives, not when anyone orders.
- **One term per day.** Other wordings ("boss's day gifts", "admin day ideas") may run earlier or later.
- **US only, five years, one window.** Dates move (Hanukkah, Mother's Day), so each year is measured against its own date.

## What to Know Before You Order

- **In the final week, there may not be time.** The order page shows the expected date before you pay, so a card can go first and the box follow, worded as a thank-you.
- **Hot months:** the box holds chocolate truffles, which can melt on the way to a hot address.
- **Delivery dates are carrier estimates,** so a box can't be timed to an exact day.

## Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits in the Gap

The gap is lead time. A gift you make yourself needs more of it, not less: by our estimate, 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work plus a week or more waiting for supplies to arrive ([DIY vs ordering](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/compare/diy-mug-gift-box-vs-ordering)).

With Personalized Gifts Delivered, the lead time is the 7 business days above and the work is ours: we print your logo, pack each box and ship it to its own address. Before you pay, the order page shows the date your order ships by and the date it is expected by, as a carrier estimate, if you pay that day.

For a date still two or more weeks away, the box is a [custom logo mug gift box, shipped to each client, no minimum](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/custom-logo-mug-gift-box): an 11 oz white ceramic mug with your logo, Ghirardelli hot cocoa, 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles and your printed card, $35 per box, delivered.

## Frequently asked questions

### When do people start searching for holiday gifts?

Holiday gift searches start weeks before Christmas: in US Google Trends data for 2021–2025, "gifts for clients" and "christmas gifts for employees" peaked one to three weeks before Christmas, with a median 73% to 78% of each 8-week run-up two or more weeks out. Named appreciation days are searched much later.

### When do people search for Employee Appreciation Day?

Mostly in the last week: US Google Trends data for 2022–2026 shows a median 67% of the 8-week run-up's searches for "employee appreciation day" in its final week, with the peak there every year.

### How far ahead do you need to order a shipped gift?

Personalized Gifts Delivered ships within 2 business days of a complete order, and boxes usually arrive 2–5 business days after they ship, so a gift needs about 7 business days, or 9 to 11 calendar days. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December. For the nine named days we measured, 7% to 29% of run-up searches came two or more weeks out.

### Is Google Trends data the number of searches?

No: Google says each data point "is divided by the total searches of the geography and time range it represents" and "scaled on a range of 0 to 100", so this study shows when a term is searched, not how often.
