# Employee Appreciation Day 2027 (Fri, Mar 5): Gifts That Reach Remote Teams, and What Employees Want

Employee Appreciation Day 2027 is Friday, March 5: it's the first Friday in March every year. Most searches for it come in the week of the day, too late to ship a gift, so plan four weeks out. What employees ask for is recognition that's specific to them: a sincere note that names what they did.

**Key facts**

- **First Friday in March:** Friday, March 5, 2027, and Friday, March 3, 2028 ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employee_Appreciation_Day)).
- **Created in 1995** by Bob Nelson, "initially to celebrate the publication of his book 1,001 Ways to Reward Employees" (same source).
- **Twice as likely to say they'll quit.** Gallup: "employees who do not feel adequately recognized are twice as likely to say they'll quit in the next year" ([Gallup](https://www.gallup.com/workplace/236441/employee-recognition-low-cost-high-impact.aspx)).
- **Searches come late.** A median 67% of the 8-week run-up's US Google searches for "employee appreciation day" came in the final week, 2022–2026 ([our Google Trends study](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-calendar/gifting-timing-gap-study)).
- **IRS Publication 15-B on gift cards:** cash equivalents, "for example, gift certificates, gift cards", "no matter how little, are never excludable as a de minimis benefit" ([IRS](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p15b)).

## When Is Employee Appreciation Day 2027?

| Year | Employee Appreciation Day | The week before it |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | Fri Mar 5 | Mon Feb 22 – Fri Feb 26 |
| 2028 | Fri Mar 3 | Mon Feb 21 – Fri Feb 25 |

It's the first Friday in March, so it's always a workday. It isn't a federal holiday, and there are none in the weeks before it in 2027: after Washington's Birthday on Monday, February 15, the next federal holiday is Memorial Day, Monday, May 31 ([OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/)).

The day has a founder. Wikipedia's article says Bob Nelson, "a founding member of Recognition Professionals International", created it in 1995, and "Beginning in 1995, Nelson collaborated with his publishing company, Workman Publishing, to make the holiday appear prominently on workplace calendars." Its purpose, in the same article: "to remind managers everywhere of the importance of thanking their employees when they do good work."

## The Week-Of Search Trap

People look the day up when it's already close. In our study of five years of US Google Trends data, the final week before Employee Appreciation Day held a median 67% of the 8-week run-up's searches, the peak fell in that week in all five years, and only 21% came two or more weeks out ([our study](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-calendar/gifting-timing-gap-study)). The final-week share by year:

| 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 71% | 72% | 67% | 65% | 64% |

A shipped, printed gift needs time: it ships within 2 business days of a complete order and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships, so count back at least 7 business days. Seven business days is 9 to 11 calendar days, so a box for March 5 has to be ordered before the week that holds most of the searches. That's why the plan below starts four weeks out.

## A 4-Week Plan for March 5

Our suggestion, counted back from Friday, March 5:

| When | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 4 weeks out | Set the budget and the list: everyone, or one team | Including everyone is arithmetic: at $35 delivered, 40 employees come to $1,400 |
| 3 weeks out | Collect home addresses for remote and hybrid staff | People need time to answer; here's [how to collect employee addresses](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/employee-gifts/collect-employee-addresses) |
| 2 to 3 weeks out | Write the card, check every card in the preview, and order at least 7 business days before the day it should arrive | The order page shows the ship-by and expected-by dates, as a carrier estimate, before you pay |
| Final week | Ask managers to thank each person by name, in words | Gallup: nearly a quarter named a senior leader or CEO as the source of their most memorable recognition (below) |
| Fri Mar 5 | Say it out loud too: a team call, a message from the owner | The gift backs up the words; it doesn't replace them |

A remote team is spread over addresses, so the address step is the one that slips. Start it first.

## What Employees Say They Want

**Recognition that's specific.** Gallup's article on employee recognition: "the most effective recognition is honest, authentic and individualized to how each employee wants to be recognized," and it "can be as small as a personal note or a thank-you card." It adds that "Nearly one-quarter said the most memorable recognition comes from a high-level leader or CEO" ([Gallup](https://www.gallup.com/workplace/236441/employee-recognition-low-cost-high-impact.aspx), updated January 12, 2024).

**A real note.** In a 2024 r/humanresources thread, an HR person at a company of about 300 employees "spread over multiple states", with its support staff all remote, wanted "to do more than the classic 'I appreciate you' email" ([r/humanresources](https://www.reddit.com/r/humanresources/comments/1am7owd/)). One reply, from someone outside HR: "please move away from gifting candy in the future. It feels so juvenile and I'd rather a sincere written card." In another thread, a commenter suggested having "managers do handwritten notes thanking each employee with a message at least 3 sentences long" ([r/humanresources](https://www.reddit.com/r/humanresources/comments/1bvslgc/)).

**Something that isn't junk.** That second thread opened with a poster tasked with picking a gift on "$5/person" for about 150 employees, who wanted to avoid "mouse pads, pens, cheap, branded mugs, plastic-filled 'gift baskets'" ([r/humanresources](https://www.reddit.com/r/humanresources/comments/1bvslgc/)). The same poster put "Stanley/Yeti cups" among the nicer gifts the budget couldn't reach, so the line was drawn at cheap, not at drinkware; what separates a gift from swag, with the evidence, is in [is a branded mug a gift or swag?](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/why-gifts-work/branded-mug-gift-or-swag)

**Not instead of pay.** Commenters in that thread also name time off and cash. A gift box is the thank-you that goes with those, not a substitute (our suggestion).

## Gifts That Reach Remote Teams

An office can hold a lunch. A remote team needs something that goes to each home. The options:

| Option | Reaches remote staff? | What they get | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pizza or a catered lunch | Only people in the office | A meal on the day | "Employees hate... When you equate your appreciation to a pizza party," one r/humanresources commenter wrote |
| A gift card by email | Yes | A code in an inbox | The IRS rule on cash equivalents, below |
| An extra day off | Yes | Time | Coverage; it's the employer's call |
| A shipped gift box | Yes, to each home address | Something to open, and a card | Addresses: start three weeks out |

Several of these go together: a day off with a box on the doorstep, or a bonus with a card that says why. How a gift card compares with a physical gift: [gift card vs physical gift](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/compare/gift-card-vs-physical-gift).

On gift cards, one commenter in the $5 thread wrote: "We are required to tax employees on gift cards, so a $5 gift card ends up being like $3.75, so we can't do that" ([r/humanresources](https://www.reddit.com/r/humanresources/comments/1bvslgc/)).

## Gift Cards for Employees: What IRS Publication 15-B Says

> "A de minimis benefit is any property or service you provide to an employee that has so little value (taking into account how frequently you provide similar benefits to your employees) that accounting for it would be unreasonable or administratively impracticable. Cash and cash equivalent fringe benefits (for example, gift certificates, gift cards, and the use of a charge card or credit card), no matter how little, are never excludable as a de minimis benefit."
>
> Among the publication's examples of de minimis benefits: "Holiday or birthday gifts, other than cash, with a low fair market value (FMV)."
>
> Source: [IRS Publication 15-B (2026)](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p15b), "For use in 2026"; read October 29, 2026.

The publication's de minimis section gives no dollar figure for a "low fair market value"; the 2027 edition may change, and the full walk-through is in [employee gift taxes](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/gift-rules/employee-gift-taxes).

## What to Write: Employee Appreciation Day Messages

Gallup's word is "individualized", so name the person and, where you can, the thing. Each message below is under 300 characters with no sign-off; on a Personalized Gifts Delivered order, [Name] becomes each person's first name, and every card in the order carries the same words.

> Happy Employee Appreciation Day, [Name]. Thank you for the work you do every day, the seen and the unseen. We notice, and we're grateful.

> [Name], this year doesn't happen without you. Thank you for showing up, for the extra mile and for making this a better place to work.

> We don't share an office, [Name], but we share every win. Thank you for everything you do. Take a warm break on us.

> Thank you for [specific project], [Name]. It made a real difference to the team and to me. Happy Employee Appreciation Day.

The last one names a project, which goes on every card in its order. To thank each person for something different, place one order per person or per project: one box is a complete order. More wording: [employee holiday card messages](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/card-messages/employee-holiday-card-messages).

## What Sending These Yourself Takes

Yes: you can assemble and ship appreciation boxes yourself, and by our estimate 25 logo mug gift boxes take about 9 hours of hands-on work: a mug printer and a proof, about 8 separate supply orders, cleaning up the address list and buying labels, 25 cards, packing at about 8 minutes a box, then drop-off and tracking. Add a week or more waiting for supplies, which for March 5 means ordering them in early February. They come to about $38 a box with USPS counter postage and about $34 with commercial postage, with $1,192.84 paid up front for the mugs, the retail supply packs and 25 postage labels ([DIY vs ordering](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/compare/diy-mug-gift-box-vs-ordering), as of Oct 29, 2026). Per box, that's about even with our $35, before your time.

What one small mistake costs: a mug packed without a collar can break at the handle and must be bought, packed and shipped again; a stale home address sends a box away and back; a typo on 25 printed cards means printing 25 again.

## What to Know Before You Order

- **The seal sticker.** The order page names the gold seal sticker that closes the tissue before you pay. While "Happy Holidays" is the only sticker in stock, a March box carries that one; your card carries the thank-you.
- **Where we ship.** We ship from New York to the lower 48 states and Washington, DC, except Texas for now; no Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, APO/FPO or international. The order page flags any row we can't ship to, so you can fix it or take it out before you pay.
- **The treats.** LINDOR truffles contain milk, soy and barley malt (gluten); read the labels. See the [allergy and diet checklist](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/client-gifts/food-allergy-gift-checklist).
- **One message per order,** greeting each person by first name. A different message for one team is its own order.
- **No set delivery day.** Each box ships within 2 business days of a complete order, so the day you order is the day you choose.

## Where Personalized Gifts Delivered Fits on Employee Appreciation Day

For a team spread across homes and states, the job is one gift sent to each person's door, with a note in your words. Personalized Gifts Delivered does the part between your list and the carrier: we print your logo small on an 11 oz white ceramic mug, pack a 1.5 oz packet of Ghirardelli premium hot cocoa and 4 Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles inside it, pack it by hand in foam in a matte-black gift box with a magnetic lid, and lay your printed card on the lid, greeting each person by first name.

Add your logo (or type your website and we'll find it), or a photo or a few words for a personal gift; check the preview of your mug and card; add your address list; and pay $35 per box. We print, pack and ship each box to its own address. The list can be typed, pasted, a CSV or a Google Sheet; start from the [address spreadsheet template](https://personalizedgiftsdelivered.com/how-it-works/client-address-spreadsheet-template).

Ships within 2 business days of a complete order (your design, your address list and payment). Ships by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS Ground, with tracking, and usually arrives 2–5 business days after it ships. Delivery dates are carrier estimates, not guarantees, and run slower in mid-December. When your boxes ship, you get one email with a spreadsheet of recipient, ship date, carrier, tracking number and $35 per box.
